  • The MN&S Job runs on the northern portion of the former Minneapolis, Northfield, and Southern Railway. This local operates out of Humboldt Yard, works the line, and interchanges with Progressive Rail before heading back.
    In this video, we'll follow a few different MN&S Jobs, and watch it make its way down the line, switches out areas, interchanges, and works its way back. Along the way, we'll get a short history of places a long the route, and see how other places have changed in the past few years. The line cuts through neighborhoods, backyards, parks, and other areas is it goes about its way. Its a neat line, full of great photo opportunities, and history!

      HA... i think CP Rails idea of positive corporate imaging extends only as far as putting clean engines and clean railcars on the cover of their quarterly/yearly investor report booklets... after that, it's "dirty engine business" as usual.

      @@25mfd It’s harder to hit a moving target and their road power only hits the shop for any length of time every 90 days for their inspections.

      Good question! That track is out of service, and owned by CPKC. While it hasn't seen a train in years, it is *not* abandoned. Progressive Rail serves the southern part of the line via Northfield to Lakeville, and back. That line is VERY active. Here is a link to that line: th-cam.com/video/6UNFOk_tA9w/w-d-xo.html

    On a lot of Saturdays an eastbound BNSF and southbound CP come real close to doing an over-and-under in St. Louis Park. I don’t think the crews should call it the MN&S job since currently the track has som real ballast under it, which was not the case in pre-Soo days. To their credit, Soo Line threw a considerable amount of money at their purchase. Anyone who walked the old MN&S tracks like I did nearly every day knows that good ballast on the old “monkeynuts” was pit-run pea gravel pushed into the dirt. Yet for all that lousy ballast I remember the monster grain drags the MN&S would pull through Crystal in the late afternoons. Four, five or six round-roof SW’s and a lot of the NSC cylindrical hoppers (or Canadian grain cars as they are sometimes known). Because of the afternoon westbound parade of Soo Line traffic those grain drags could be stuck at the junction for quite a while. In the mid 80s I started working at the Creamette pasta plant in New Hope. We were the epitome of captive shipping because pasta manufacturing is a razor thin-margin business and taking semolina by rail was essential to remaining profitable. For many years we took flour in single-bay airslide hoppers. Eventually the company upgraded our decrepit siding enough for the 50-foot double airslides after which a little more work allowed our plant to receive flour in the weirdest cars imaginable. The cars looked like your average slab-sided PS 100 ton hoppers but the bottoms of the three compartments were removed and custom-made airslide membranes and pneumatic outlets were installed in their place. We only had two hose stations to unload with so there was a fair bit of rearranging cars to empty them. Our switcher was a beat-up Michigan front-end loader that could push two empties a hill. I think there were 20 of those cars in the lease pool. Woe be to the railroad if our cars didn’t show up on schedule. We would have to truck flour in which was a money-losing practice that the railroad would have to make good on. The semolina flour they trucked in came from the ADM mill along Hiawatha which is the last mill still open there. If we were running all-out, which we almost always were, we could eat up four or five of those cars in a day. Now they take flour in the P-D hoppers but the siding is still decrepit.

    Thx SD for showing skunk hollow. Forgot that's what it was called. Rode the bike over there a couple of weeks ago and the old tracks that lead to it are cut off but Hill is still there. Is that correct?

    • @SD457500
      @SD457500  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That is correct; the Milw connection at Skunk Hollow is long gone, but the connection with the MN&S is still alive and well for the time being. As part of the light rail project, a new connection was built with the MNS and TCWR. Thanks for watching!

  • @jaydee975

    Just letting you know, it seems like progressive rail runs down the old the MNS tracks in South Bloomington usually around noon 1 o’clock on Monday afternoons. I know that’s because when I started making nature videos for my TH-cam channel, I would always hear a train whistle on the tracks as the trains were crossing old Shakopee Road in Bloomington. 🙄😂

  • @jaydee975
    @jaydee975 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Soo 4438 was on the old Luce line. So when I cross those tracks, I called them the Luce Line tracks. And there’s also a spur line that goes between the Dan patch tracks and the Luce line tracks, which I referred to as “the Luce Patch“. 😌

  • @jaydee975

    It would be nice if progressive rail revived service on the old Dan patch line across the old swing bridge to Lakeville. Too bad there’s no consideration for it right now.
