A tasty dram indeed! I've had a bottle of Glen Scotia in 2023 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Bottled in the beginning of 2022. Sweet, syrupy, nicely balanced. Cask influence is undeniably there but the spirit character hasn't been bulldozed by it. Last week I had the opportunity to taste another batch, this time from 02.02.2023 and it was even better. Slightly less sweet, more savory and briny, still beautifully dense and substantial. The major difference though was that the more recent bottle had distinctive smoky notes. Very gentle but compared to the previous batch I have tasted the smoke was significantly more present. As for value, Glen Scotia Double Cask is among the best single malt whiskies in Bulgaria. Currently I can have a bottle of it on special sale for the equivalent of roughly 23 pounds! Cheers!
Glen Scotia is already better than Springbank, in my book anyway. I adore Glen Scotia and it’s not being hoarded and price jacked by snobs. Plus I like the whisky better, flat out.
Love Glen Scotia .. my favorite whisky…it’s nice to know it’s just down the Loch as I live on Loch Fyne ..tried a taster of this one in Callander at a whisky shop and bought a bottle before we moved here..managed to pick up the 15 and a first fill bourbon cask at 56.5 % which the George hotel in Inveraray had a barrel of divine really shows what great whisky it is..prefer it more than Springbank and tried a few of those can assure you ..great review
I got a bottle of this whisky about 10 years ago and was a bit disappointed as it had a sulfur note that didn't go away for nearly 6 months of patiently tasting and letting it sit for a few weeks before testing it again. Perhaps it's time to give this one another chance. *_Edit_* This evening I purchased the Double Cask and I'm very impressed with this current bottling. The nose has notes of butter-scotch, vanilla and a faint oakiness. The flavors on the palate really are very well balanced between the influences of the bourbon casks and the PX casks, so plenty of citrus, pineapple and honey along with some darker, more savory fruit flavors as well. The finish is medium-long and drying. For a NAS whisky, this is really good stuff. There's practically no "young whisky bite" in evidence. If given a dram of this in a blind tasting, I would guess its age to be 10 to 12 years, and for all we know the majority of the spirit might actually be that old. I may have just found my new "everyday" single malt. Thanks for reviewing this, Ralfy!
Just wrote this - then discovered you already did ... Many of the Glen Scotia Whiskies are marked as coloured at German providers' websites. Only the sherried ones aren't.
Once I had a miniature of Victoriana. I took a sip and it was bitter as hell. I left it sitting on a shelf for a year. After that it was superb. It improved so much and no trace of bitterness at all. And Double Cask is a very nice and competent malt too.
Very good review Ralfy , I totally agree ,fantastic whisky and really good value for money . Glen Scotia my fav distillery , character at each level each release …without the crazy prices .
Finished 3 bottles of this since 2020, a very good whisky indeed. Full, round, warm. I would love to see this one at 7 years old for some reason. Glen Scotia 7 Double Cask. Oh yeah bring it
I bought this back in 2021 and was impressed with how good it was for the price. Just checked the latest pricing and it has only increased by about $5 NZD since I bought it. Nice to see Billy cat again. He certainly knows where the treats are kept. Cheers!
I was looking for a robust scotch and I took a chance on this one with no age statement. Very pleased with it, and happy to see you enjoying it as well
I bought a bottle of the Double Cask 3 years ago and really really liked it. I was my first time trying a Campbelltown whisky and it didn’t disappoint. I got the viscosity, resinness, and richness I had been hearing about. I got a mini bottle of the Double Cask last year and it seemed a lot thinner and blander to me. Not sure if there was something going on with my palate or if they really do fill their minis with a different liquid.
Greetings Mr Ralfy and thank you for another informative review. I always have one of these or newer entry-level ones, Harbour, in my stock. The price is between AU$82 to AU$89 here, and in fact, I wanted to buy another one lately but found Deanston 12 yr old on sales for the same price. I have reached my whisky purchasing limit for this month, so it has to wait. By the way , there is a whisky live thing going on at the moment in Australia, and I was tempted to buy a ticket, which is AU$155 but after checking the distilleries coming to there, I decided not to do it. It is hard to really taste whiskies in less than 3 hours. Cheers, and have a great week.
I tried Glen Scotia Double cask at the whisky experience in Edinburgh and definitely the whisky that opened me up to the wider whisky world away from what you get in the supermarkets, tasty stuff.
So glad you reviewed the double cask. I honestly believe this is a huge sleeper bottle. I’ve had this blind with much higher priced malts and enjoyed this more. This is a shelf staple for me.
Lovely dram! For me, one of the best budget NAS whiskies. In Bulgaria it usually costs around EUR 30; however, I bought a bottle at Metro at EUR 22, which is a ridiculously low price for such a good whisky.
Right now i enjoy the Double Cask with the Rum Finish. Deliciously dirty.😋 The One you review here is waiting unopened in the Stash, next to its Brothers😅. I really like Glen Scotia because over the last 10 Years their Quality increased very much since they had these colourfull Metaltins around the Bottles. The Double Cask Standard is now (June2024) available here in Germany for 39€. Greetings from Germany😎🤘
I love this dram its always been a go to for a daily dram. Delicious toffee and caramel and its blended with sherry and american oak to perfection. I will say older batches were slightly better juice.
Although it's the equivalent of about 60+ pounds here in Western Canada, it was one of my fav Scotches when I tried it. I don't see it around anymore but the 10 year old is now available and it's 15 pounds cheaper. It leads me to believe there is either some older whisky in the Double Cask or they are using their very best casks for it.
this bottle currently sells for 85 dollars canadian in Ontario and 70 dollars in quebec (both Provincially regulated stores), so is still a good buy here in Canada. I have an older bottle with the black foil wrapper and the wharf and buildings on the label and box from a couple of years ago..
Ralfy, you mentioned "price pumping", well I've just noticed that on the Glen Scotia website, that they are offering a free Glencairn glass with the bottle. BTW, thanks for the great review, all true!
FYI Glen Scotia's parent company Loch Lomond came under new ownership in 2014, so it's been a full decade now, but note that the same distillery manager, Iain McAlister, has been the helm since the early 2000s, and he's largely responsible for cask management.
Good job Ralfy! Here Is something it made me think: I drink scotch for over 35 yrs now (not always the best one) but I frankly never heard about whisky mist marketing stuff from somebody drinking scotch I have heard beginners saying it is sweet or it is easy to drink or not too strong (ABV)…. but never too misty I agree that a reason for filtration coming from producers but is it really coming from consumers demand? IMO I am not sure that Glen scotia had to filter a bit its double cask to please the traveler or the beginner about mist Maybe GS wanted instead to create an easy drinking stuff and for instance get rid of a funky tasting note that doesn’t fit with beginners palette and is loved by enthousiastes … Cheers 🥃
I generally like Glen Scotia, but if I’m gonna pay their premium (but not outrageous) price I save for the older stuff. Because their slightly older stuff is actually a good value for the quality and age compared to other distilleries. Of course, in the US all alcohol is suffering in inflation more than most the world.
This could very well be Ralfy’s whisky of the year. He clearly really impressed and with great value like that, it really seems like it could be his choice. Just sayin 😉
All Glen Scotia bottlings are pretty interesting and decent, even 40%. Unfortunately, everything with dye. But it still beats any mainstream whisky at tastings.
Hi Ralfy. I have been following your channel. Your videos are very informational. You recently mention you will be putting up videos with regards to independent bottlers and what a good idea! I have always interested why IB bought the whisky from well known distilleries and yet when the IB bottled them, the whisky are not as good as the original bottling? Also, if the IB bought different casks from a single distillery and blended them, does this malt regard as a Single Malt?
Here in NZ malted grain has gone up in price by 25%. Because of the Ukraine war with Putin. The price of malted barley is controlled by the world market. 20 minutes up the road NZ grown and malted barley has gone up 25% .It totally sucks. My homebrew store is absorbing the price rise to keep his customers. Customers like me are paying more too. The prices, ralfy are going to rise more. This whole my whisky is worth more than yours is going to change. Economics on the world market is going to hit harder than ever before. Excise tax, malt prices .and hops are killing the industry . Even home brewing is not so cheap anymore. Cheers mate😎👍
Ralfy, when you say "it's a hell of a good whisky for the price", I wish you would say the price since prices vary so much in different regions/countries. I've seen prices on bottles differ by as much as 100% from one place to another. So it would be good to know what you think is a good value based on your actual numbers. Thanks!
$65.oo here on the west coast of Florida. Definitely not worth the price. Thin, sour, and colored. Years ago the 15 was a superlative whisky. And now they color that.
Ralfy ,is there any reason why you haven't reviewed the Glasgow 1770? The peated cask strength and the original cask strength are pritty decent for young whiskies.
I quickly became a big fan of this bottle. One thing I’m confused about though… by all accounts I see it’s unpeated, but I swear I taste peat in the background. Anyone else? And this isn’t my first go-around, I’ve been at it for a number of years now. I don’t know, perhaps they reuse some casks that formally held peated malt, or maybe it’s just the way the briny and oak char notes commingle on my palate.
I was scanning all the comments here to see if I was the only one who gets some lovely smoke on the palate and finish. I'm happy to see you also detect the peaty contribution. (For contrast, I have never, ever, tasted peat on Oban 14, which everyone else in the world describes as "lightly peated". LOL)
One could argue they are transparant, because there is some colouring added tot the whisky (at least in The Netherlands). Not much, but still. So, if they would have stated that it was natural colour, they would be telling a lie.
Lone voice of dissent: I've a bottle of this and I just can't seem to enjoy it was much as others here. It does get better with a little water added to open it up but before that I just don't find it that enjoyable. Sorry malt mates!
Only Glen Scotia I've tried so far is a sample of the 15 year. Did not agree with me, too funky/tangy and orange for me. Don't get what the fuss is about tbh, ah well, will leave it for others to enjoy
