    As a reseller of sports cards and collectibles on eBay. I thank you for sharing your concern's about card selling industry on eBay. I have been guilty of what you are sharing. You open my eyes from the customer perspective. In my business for the new year I will adjust my store. Thanks again and Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year🎄☃️🎄

      @anthonythomasexperience Thanks for watching and commenting, Anthony! I have gotten some pretty good feedback from the dealer perspective from this video, and I'm thankful for yours as well. Just like dealers at a card show, you are absolutely entitled to list your cards for any price you want. I'm going to buy the best example for the cheapest price I can find, just like any transaction. It's a dance. I'm trying to get the card as cheap as I can, and the seller is trying to maximize profits as well! Thanks again.

      @@anthonythomasexperience wow. isn't storage unit auctions risky, n buying around a million, super time consuming? if it helps, ive been considering buyin in semi bulk on boxing cards, LA sports cards, even junk wax n rings n shoes, since this is niche stuff that can be cheap.
      beside storage, it's basically garage sales n flea markets that u do?

    I try to price my cards as fair as possible. I do have 3 categories in my brain:
    1. PC Cards, which don’t go for sale
    2. Inventory Cards, those cards are strictly inventory and I try to be competitive and offer free shipping
    3. “Speculation” Cards, those cards I list but if I can’t get the price I’m looking for I’m fine to hold on to them for the long term.
    I try to respond to offers as quickly as possible and will be very transparent in the negotiations.

    You will be happy those sellers that are trying to increase the value of a limited number card…..when you own one and the market shrinks by 1. Some of the prices you mentioned are indeed ridiculous but continuing to pass around cards at “comp” do nothing but decrease the value of the card because if they stay the same while the value of a dollar decreases…..well you already know. Good video though man, as a seller (and buyer of good deals for my PC) I like to hear the way you look at it, you definitely are showing patience and will be rewarded for it in the end.

      That can be part of it. But I think a lot of buyers don't understand that sellers are usually only making thin profits on most of their cards. buyers don't take into account that the seller has to pay ebay a selling fee, shipping supplies like printer ink and paper, tape, bubble mailers, and envelopes.
      As a seller we usually get a discount because we buy in bulk. So it can be frustrating for us when a buyer comes along asking for a discount when they're only buying 1 card. It's like if you walked into Macy's and said "I know you're asking $80 for this jacket, but I only want to pay what you paid for it." They're gonna say "No, if you want it for that price then you have to buy 500 of them from the distributor."

    Thanks for the video! I guess I don’t buy often enough on eBay to notice inventory being down. But, eBay is my go to as far as where I buy cards online. I usually stick to auctions and know immediately where my tap out is. Usually, my tap out price is low because that’s where my budget is. But sometimes I get lucky. I do use the BIN option on my Gary Carter’s and Dale Murphy’s because they typically don’t sell for much and their prices don’t fluctuate.
    The only other online option I’ve used (besides Facebook groups) is COMC. I have not used it much lately though because of turnaround time and shipping costs.

    I'll tell you why I avoid it. The USPS is a nightmare. I bought through ebay for 21 years and this is the worst it has ever been in terms of mail. I would rather go to a local show abd buy there. Hi Billy. I agree with you on many fronts. Ebay is the easiest platform for me to use, as there are not many shows around here that have what I am interested in. The other factor for me is the increased pricing for shipping, coming to Canada. I haven`t purchased very much from ebay the past year. Most of my purchases have been through the bigger shows (Strongsville, National, Expo). Good luck on eventually getting the Griffey card, at a price that works for you. I agree with your take on eBay right now. I don’t mind waiting for an auction to end, but there are way more overpriced Buy it Now cards that aren’t accepting offers. I’ve occasionally had luck messaging the seller for listings that don’t accept offers and making an offer via message if their Buy It Now price is reasonable, but it’s not as easy as if the listing is accepting Offers. They will just send an offer at the price we negotiated so the buying process is the same though.

I registered my Sales Tax license for Minnesota with Ebay and don't pay taxes on purchases. We need that Sales Tax permit for our local Twin Cities Sports Collectors Club shows. Hey Bill! Thanks again for the shout out in the video. I still spend an unhealthy amount of time searching eBay for deals and I’m still finding them. I think eBay is still king, because of its reach and ease of use. It can be frustrating dealing with people that think their cards are worth way more than comps, but I still find people who are willing to deal. Patience is not my virtue either and I think that’s why I look at a broad spectrum of cards to find a good deal. Rather than getting overly focused on one card and overpaying. Great topic for a collaboration or a live, if you ask me. Merry Christmas!

      Hey Steve, thanks for watching and commenting. For me, it's eBay followed by shows. I usually go that same route on eBay. I target listings that allow offers and throw one out. If it doesn't get auto rejected, I wait for it to be rejected, accepted, or countered. Then, depending on the circumstances, it's another offer sent. It seems like fewer are willing to negotiate. That's where the real frustration comes from for me.

    I think some sellers with lots of listing's have them priced high because they are speculating that the cards value may go up for some reason or other. They can't completely stay current on prices for hundreds of listing's, so the price them at what they think maybe future prices for said card. I mean Rickey Henderson just passed and a ton of his cards sold immediately following the news, so if you were priced at comps you probably left money on the table for that short spike in demand. I'm not saying it's justified but I do think some sellers do this.

    • @billyballgamesportscards
      @billyballgamesportscards  19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @mangobango6970 Thanks for watching and commenting. I think you're onto something with some sellers. But why have a card listed for twice its value with no "or best offer?" A 200 dollar card is going to take a long time to become a 400 dollar card under normal circumstances. Even with the Henderson scenario you spoke about, his cards aren't going to double from his passing. I'm just spitballing here. I get it that it's not you and you don't have all the answers. No one does, but a lot of it just doesn't make sense to me. Thanks again for the comment!

      @billyballgamesportscards another thought about the best offer thing is...I've listed without a best offer before, because I know some people will reach out in ebay messages asking for my best price (which drives me crazy) but if they are interested i can lower the bin that will require them to pay immediately unlike if I accept an offer (or send them an offer) then they have 4 days to decide if they are going to pay for it. Plus even half the time I lower the bin for a negotiated price and they don't end up purchasing it anyway, so it just wasted my time.

    Gave a video like. For me, eBay is still king. You will always have people putting cards on there that are hoping to get a much higher price then recent comps. Comps can be tricky too though. If someone is looking to compare something that is listed as a buy it now or best offer to a sale of an auction, they will likely be disappointed more than they are pleased. The point of an auction is to try and get a great deal on something you want that you wouldn't ordinarily be able to get. You could also have someone list something as buy it now that doesn't really deal in cards and sell something way cheaper than it would otherwise go for. That doesn't mean sales following that one should be compared to that sale. Rather, that sale was an outlier. So much more could be said, don't want to post a novel on comps.

    • @billyballgamesportscards
      @billyballgamesportscards  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Much appreciated, Brian! You're right comps can be tricky for sure. But if a card sells fairly regularly, I think VCP average price will give you pretty good comps. @@billyballgamesportscards I guess I'm just sort of use to it on higher demand cards. I just have to be extra patient and wait for an auction or something. When you are dealing with cards like that, you might be coming up against "investors" who are waiting to sell and maximize their profits. You also will likely have collectors who value their card higher than what they currently go for. I don't have VCP. Is there a way to filter all recent sales of the card and get the average of the ones that sold via buy it now and best offer and exclude the auctions? I wonder if that would change the price difference a bit since there is such a substantial difference in price from what they were just recently selling for.

    I still think the volume and usability of eBay makes it the best buying platform available. I collect for a PC and buy to flip, and I make purchases for both all the time on eBay. For flipping, I'm almost always bidding on $.99 starting bid auctions. I aim to get them at 75-80% what I think I can sell them for, and typically win around 5-6% of what I bid on. Ideally I can sell them on another platform and avoid the eBay fees, but I do end up listing most of it on eBay using the BIN/OBO option with a BIN slightly above comps, and usually below any other listing on eBay for the same card in the same grade. If someone makes a reasonable offer I will usually meet them in the middle and they usually accept. I'm not making any huge profits, but it's fun to own the cards briefly and make a small profit.

    eBay is still the biggest sports card marketplace in the world and it's open 24/7. As someone with an eBay store with over 3,800 listings, anything I list over $1.99 is listed with Or Best Offer. I get a lot of offers at 50% of list price no matter what price I list it at (sometimes as low as 30%), so I list it where I can make a good profit, but competitively and willing to negotiate. I think auctions bring far less then what you can get if you price it out yourself.

    In my opinion on that Griffey card the prices are going to be in a wide range. It's somewhat rare, especially for that era and its a very popular player and a somewhat popular set. You even mentioned that it was almost impossible to find at shows. The buyer probably had to pay close to comps, so if I was lucky enough to have one like that to sell I would ask over comps. Now the Bench card, yeah you aren't getting over comps.

    Buyers always want the discounted bulk price, but without buying bulk. My suggestion is that if you're in a stalemate with a seller, go into their ebay store and find a few other things you like and put together a little package. Then message the seller and say something like "Hey, i'm interested in these 5 cards you're selling. You're asking $60 total. Would you take $45? He'll come back at $55, then you meet at $50. A lot of times when you bundle like that and you spread the money out you end up getting the card that you really liked for even less than what you were hoping for.

    As a seller on ebay I might be able to offer a different perspective. Most sellers only do it as a part time hobby. Most of us have full time jobs that pay our bills, so were not under pressure to sell cards quickly. I personally don't mind sitting on a card for a few years if I have to just to get a price I'm happy with. Over the last couple of years I've been loading up on future hall of fame'rs like Von Miller and Rob Gronkowski and I expect them to just be sitting on my ebay store for a few years until they're inducted and people are willing to pay a little more for them. So I'm rejecting offers for $40 because I know in a few years I'll be able to get $70 for them.

I have it listed now because in the meantime a nostalgia collector might come along and buy it at full asking price, because maybe Von Miller was his favorite player and they have fond memories of him winning the Super Bowl MVP with the Broncos.

    Hey Billy! Listening to your plight, I have a lot of sympathy for you. I was in the same place as you with that Griffey 92 Elite about a year and a half ago. I did a lot of research and comping and waited WAY longer than I would have thought until the right one (BGS 9) came along at the right price. I have some thoughts in general and also about this specific card. Im feeling a LONG comment coming on… maybe I should just make a video response! 😂
    In the case of this specific card, I think VCP is wrong. I have no clue about how they arrive at their $288 for a PSA 9. That card sits around $350-$400 all day, (or at least it did when I was hunting for it). Now, because I collect cards, not plastic, and I refuse to pay the PSA premium for a “mint” card, I decided that I was going to specifically target either a BGS 9 or an SGC 9, which both comped right around $250. The red PSA label wasn’t (and still isn’t) worth the extra $100 tax to me. So, if you’re specifically targeting a PSA slab, you may need to prepare to drop some more coin than what VCP says, because they’re wrong.
    This case study is representative of a few larger issues though: “PSA” slab premiums vs other companies’ holders, comps having dubious accuracy, and the one that’s tickling my brain as I write this - the “No man’s land” of card prices / values. There’s a phenomenon I’ve noticed, which you’ve described perfectly, where a card typically sells for $X, but all the BIN listings have it at $2X - $3X. Only the auctions finish close to $X when they come up, but they don’t come up too often for the specific card you’re targeting. So it’s a game of chicken: either you get impatient and just pay the inflated price, or nobody does, and the card just sits there for months or years without selling. When there aren’t a lot of a specific card available (maybe it’s the only one currently listed on eBay), sellers can sometimes get away with holding a card ransom like this. While it’s not unethical, it’s certainly annoying as a potential buyer to come across a museum table at a card show, where everything is priced at 2X comps. This “No man’s land” that fall between $X and $2X is a weird territory, where in theory, sellers should be happy to sell a card at some level around or even reasonably above auction comps. If a card sells for $100 at auction all day and a seller has it listed at $200, I don’t think an offer of $100 is an unreasonable one to throw out there. He may counter with $130 or something, but at least you’re both playing in the same ballpark. These clowns who list it for $300 though with no offers allowed, they’re probably lost causes.
    Honestly, the answer to this “No man’s land” probably looks a lot like patience. Well, that or showing completed sales to the seller to gently show them how out of touch with reality they are 😂
    Great video, Billy! Sorry for the novel! 😅

The really crazy thing that I forgot to mention in the video was a few days before my hobby allowance dropped into my account a seller made me an offer on an SGC 9.5 for around 400 (I don't remember the exact amount). Of course, someone scooped it up very quickly, and I wanted to kick myself! Sellers holding cards for ransom, as you mentioned, may be a cause of eBay's ever increasing seller fees as well! Sometimes it's just a card a person would sell ONLY if it was a price they can't refuse. (But why list it?) Or they are just that patient in certain cases. Sellers can also put a minimum offer amount, which automatically declines yours even at .01 below. It is frustrating though. I'm negotiating on a card right now. As far as prices go, many times we have to create a new floor so to speak on cards gaining exposure/popularity. Honestly channels like yours Dylan's and Graig's have increased the popularity of centering and the eye appeal factor - especially on iconic/important cards and future hall of famers. People are taking your advice and it literally affects prices, creating a new price point. My beef with eBay is their butt-buddy relationship with the IRS and their constantly overstepping fees. As a seller if the card is more valuable I want to do a 10 day auction. Because there is possible that I get more eyes 👀. And hopefully more money. A lesser value card I do 7 Day auction's. If I know the price I want I just do buy it now.

      @anthonythomasexperience Thanks again, Anthony! I love auctions! Selfishly, I wish I could find them more often for the types of cards I'm looking for! Conveniently always ending within a day or 2 of when I want to buy and always with me winning!😂😂

    eBay buy it now is just people putting up cards at random prices. I usually just message the seller before making an offer asking how serious they are about actually selling it. I have bought cards were people hade gone from 800$ to 175$. It’s all nonsense

      Wow, that's crazy Bob! Even with sellers with high feedback? I could understand if it was sellers with little to no feedback, but that's a drastic change in price! Thanks, I may have to keep that in the back of my mind moving forward.

      Well it’s interesting. I collect 2012 prizm basketball and football. Many of these cards are very low pop. So people don’t have many comps to work with. The funny thing is many of these auctions of these cards go for more then some of the buy it now’s. But for the most part if a card is way over comps just contact the seller before making an offers and just blatantly ask them what’s a realistic price. The seller knows the buy it now price isn’t realistic. Especially if it’s been sitting there for 6 months. The auto decline feature on eBay doesn’t even notify the seller you made an offer. So for example I have a card listed for 500 with the lowest offer to not get rejected at 300. If someone offers 295 I wouldn’t even know. But I would take 300 most likely. So just ask

      @brianc7719 Luckily, I've never had to deal with their customer service. They definitely have their warts, but they are the best online platform. I'd rather buy cards at shows, but it doesn't always work that way. I appreciate you watching and commenting, Brian!

    eBay is the place to sell cards if the cards are under $50,000. For anything higher, you probably are going somewhere else.

    eBay is feebay you know you talked a lot about the buyer getting a great card without paying over comp but you didn’t think about or talk about how the sellers are getting hit with all the fees causing the sellers to have to ask over what the market will support at a LCS or show

    • @billyballgamesportscards
      @billyballgamesportscards  18 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @BattsOtt I get that, but I'm not a seller, so I don't see it from that perspective. I get that and spoke about being willing to pay above comps for the right card. I don't have a problem with sellers making money and of course it's a dance. I want the card as cheaply as I can get it. They want to make the most money they possibly can. Asking 629.99 for a 288 dollar card is pretty extreme, though, in my opinion. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      @ yeah in that case I agree they are being ridiculous but unfortunately many honest sellers will say have an auto worth 300 but by the time eBay gets done with charging them fees in the shipping and sales and all they end up paying close to $100 of the value of the card to eBay so they have to sell for e but over like 1.5 times what the cards worth to get close to book in their pocket and still get a little under book value in return when the cards worth to sells that’s how bad eBay has gotten in fact because of it I sell less online now than ever but I use market place and sports card groups to move my cards for sale and I use CollX now so the buyer can get a decent price as im not paying a ton to feebay

    No! eBay is king. There is not another platform that has the number of eyes as eBay. All the other platforms, like WhatNot/Drip/Alt are all minor players. eBay does not have to advertise. The others do.

    Ebay could save some overhead money by penalizing sellers who list cards at auctions with outrageous starting prices. I see the same Cam Reddish cards not moving at auction every week bc of high starting price. How much of that cost is passed on to sellers bc of that? How many auction listings per week does ebay offer that do not get 1 bid? Prices are down for 2 major reasons. Oversupply and less money available to many collectors bc of the rise of everything prices since 2020. Let's pray/wish/hope for improvement in our economy so card prices will reclaim their past glory and I can get out of this money pit😂

      @judeniles5111 Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Jude. What you say makes sense. Sellers complain about the fees eBay charges. EBay's fees might be higher because of all the cards that stay listed indefinitely with no movement, causing more overhead on eBay's behalf, causing them to raise fees. The perverbial snake eating its tail. Very interesting! Thanks again!

      that is a really interesting take. what "overhead" would they save on? they would penalize people selling on their platform when they stand to make more money when and if an item sells. 🤔 not too likely to happen. 😛

    • @billyballgamesportscards
      @billyballgamesportscards  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @sisterraysbrother All those dead listings that stay on eBay for months and even years in some cases take up overhead space. Whether it's cloud storage, system maintenance, or listing maintenance. Even though they aren't a physical store, they still have overhead. They make money when a card sells, and it costs them money to maintain listings that just set on the platform. If there were fewer dead listings, there would be less overhead, and maybe fees wouldn't continually increase. Just my thoughts. I have never sold anything on eBay. It costs money to run and maintain the world's largest hobby museum.

      @@billyballgamesportscards maybe somebody who works in IT can elaborate but that cost is actually miniscule. I sent a chat to my buddy who would know better thinking he could articulate on the matter.. he's prob busy but he said, "the cost would amount to a rounding error."

      @sisterraysbrother I'm definitely not an IT guy for sure. It could all be kept on servers too, which would be massive and very expensive.
