- Dominica in Palmis by Jean Langlais performed by Ben Bloor on the 49 stop 1904 Norman & Beard/2009 Klais Orgelbau organ of the St Anne's Roman Catholic Cathedral, Leeds in a live recital on Monday 25th March 2024 as part of the Leeds International Concert Season.
The blind, French organist Jean Langlais had one of the most individual compositional voices of his generation. Often wild and unruly, his pieces always contain a certain excitement and electricity to them. He studied with composition with Marcel Dupre and Paul Dukas, and improvisation with Charles Tournemire, who he also succeeded as organist of Sainte-Clotilde.
'Dominica in Palmis' begins with the invocation ‘Procedamus in pace’ - proceed in peace, before exploring most of the chant associated with Palm Sunday, including ‘Gloria, laus et honor tibi sint’, and ‘Israel tu es Rex’.
Many thanks to Darius Battiwalla for the invitation to play at Leeds Cathedral, and to the Leeds International Concert Season team for use of the livestream footage.

Glad you received the invitation to pay on this organ at Leeds Cathedral. Langlais work is so ethereal. Bravo Ben.
Fabulous, Ben - a masterful performance on a magnificent organ: bravo! You certainly 'see' how to communicate the genius that was Langlais.
