Why smite not skulled I'm new to get not sure?

If unskulled, you keep your 3 most expensive items (usually). If you have the Protect Item prayer enabled you can keep 4 items on death. Sometimes people will bring 4 high value items so im smiting to hopefully drain their prayer to turn off protect item so receive one of those 4 items.
