Finally, a procedure in native English at an instructional tempo in simple, explicit language, moving from an introductory general summary, to explicit details with an overriding K.I.S.S. consciousness of the instructor. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thank you so much! This is so much clearer than the tutorial on Linux Mint's own site, which is borderline nonsensical.
Could you also do a video on what to do now that I have the drive?
Not so much "borderline nonsensical" so much as it leaves out tons of steps and seems like it was created as an afterthought.
Really The clearest explantion yet. I knew about Rufus, but I forgot. Thanks brother
Glad the video helped! Make sure to subscribe to the channel for more!
Brilliant! Thank you! Wasted hours this afternoon trying to figure out the directions on the web site. So thankful to have found this and resolved all the problems so quickly and efficiently.
Much appreciated. You just helped a person that never downloaded ANYTHING on a USB drive. 😂 Wanted to use Linux on my Thinkpad.
At the recommendation of a friend, I purchased a refurbished Dell with no operating system. He made a boot able DVD for me to use to get it up and running. I tried it and nothing worked, he was busy and didn't have time to fool with it so I started looking on line for help. I ran across this video in my search, sounded too good to be true but I followed the instructions to a tee and it worked! I'm converting over from Microsoft to Linux and this Linux Mint is pretty amazing. So thanks to the author of this video you saved me a lot of headaches.
Quick, simple, easy to understand
Great job
Glad it helped!
Thanks for the video brother. Don't worry about the trolls in the comment. I know your small but you did very well. And it is much appreciated from a person who is new to Linux. Thank you.
Thanks for the support! I am just happy to know that I have helped people. The support that I have received from this awesome community is so amazing. Welcome to the channel!
Thank you, I now know how to make a bootable Linux drive for my crappy school laptop
eyyy, you too?
@@sihwankim9572 yeah, also I'm charging kids $15 and a 20GB flash drive for the boot menu swap and flash drive format
@@sihwankim9572 also lubuntu is the only consistent is that I could find that can install on a flash drive
You're a legend. This worked excellent.

Awesome, many thanks. Not got much chance of using Mint if I was thwarted at being able to make a bootable stick, lol.
dude that was almost torture, its not LINE ux its LYNN ux
no---it's tomahtoe potahtoe ix
Hey, You can’t park there!
Agreed... Stopped watching as soon as I heard that (only made it in 30 seconds)
LEAN-UX. Lynn Ux is incorrect.
😂
I didn't see the rufus selection box for standard install or "to go" choice. I want to run linux from my USB drive until I'm familiar with it and convinced it will support what I need.
thanks , you clarified a point i was stuck on. if you click the mirrors without first clicking the download you get weird stuff and i thought i would have to do the torrent . luckily windows store has lots of torrent file apps so i could have done that . however i now know how to directly get the iso thanks to your video !
Glad the video helped!
Very clear and concise. We need more of you 👍👍
More to come!
Thanks so much! Was trying to create a boot USB on Etch and took your advice with Rufus and was then a breeze. Great info!!
Thank you. Windows was too expensive so I went with the next (if not equally best) thing.
No problem! Windows is pretty pricey nowadays, so I'm glad that I could help you find a better option. Enjoy!
Excellent presentation. Thanks!
Thank you, just what I needed 👍

Great video. One caveat if I am nitpicking which has nothing to do with the excellent content of the video. I had too search how to pronounce "Linux", just to be sure, because I have always pronounced it differently, just to make sure I was correct and yes I was correct. It is not the way it is pronounced in the video (where it rhymes with minus). It is actually "Li-nuhks" . Source: th-cam.com/video/xCw5CwR4svI/w-d-xo.html
This is my first foraging
Into anything outside of windows, I'd like to thank you for how easy you made this for me. Im only testing it on this stick to see if i like it, if i do, ive got a 2tb ssd im gonna stick it to.
You are a G for making this video. Thank you!
Great job. You helped me heaps. Thanks Rex in New Zealand
Glad my video helped! Have fun with Linux!
thank you so much, it's did work, great video and easy to follow.
Appreciate... quick, easy, and to the point
This is the Best instruction... Thanks.
Thank you, that was very helpful. Greetings from the Neatherlands
One more Q....to verify the ISO as per Linux website is a headache...never did it....any problems with that? OR, will verifying the ISO before burning it via any malware or similar programme help?
Keep up the good work
So, this is the way to install Linux on the computer.
But what to do if you want to run Linux from the usb-stick?
Going to try it tonight, thanks , you got right to it, short and sweet, just subscribed to your channel 👍
how is it going?
The music! 🔥
thank you now my windows xp pc can live on
Helpful video, thanks!
Suppose you already are using linux mint and not windows and merely want to update
to the most recent version of mint. Is the procedure exactly the same or not?
shouldnt you just be able to sudo -apt something?
Is this for INSTALLING mint on another computer or running mint just on the USB stick?
Hi there, this USB can be used for both installing Linux Mint on another computer, or for trying Mint by running it on the USB stick. I hope this answered your question!
Very clear. Thank you.
tysm so much so if i find an old pc like a win 7 or win 10 i will watch the tutortial again and boot the linux.
Make sure your wifi dongle supports Linux. Mine didn't and I had to buy one who's drivers supported Linux.
Thanks
What should be the min read write speed of the pendrive
With the complexity of modern OS's, I wouldn't try this on anything other than a USB-C Thunderbolt connection.
Clear and concise; much appreciated. I do have a question for anyone who reads it and can answer. I am building a brand new system which will use only Mint (first time using a Linux distro). To install off a USB do I pug the USB drive in first, boot up the system, and then the installation will be automatic?
If there's no other os then it should automatically boot up
@@ExploringNew1 Thanks much for answering my question.
Lî-nux, not Līnux, as in pin, not pine.
Thank you for this informative video!
Please would you write me back on how to configure my Lenovo laptop to boot up from USB?
I changed the booting to USB HDD but some BITLOCKER comes up and wants to protect the System and I get a blue screen...
Excellent job, thank you
I tried and it only dl's VLC for me even though it reads linux mint cinnamon iso. This is off the linux mint page and any of the mirrors is only VLC for me. Same on Ubunto page. Anyone else having this issue?
Thanks for your help 👍
Now how do I run it
Could you advise, please? I do not want this for gaming but simply, TH-cam/ web browsing/ perhaps email ( and I need to record TH-cam videos) Can Linux Mint serve me well after my Win 10 machine runs out of security updates & patches?
Anti virus needed?
Thank you and cheers!
We many Mate users are puzzled why you left Mate out? In fact, a lot of older machines run better w/Mate than XFCE (or equally well).
Hey there Tracy! Thanks for your comment. I was actually in the process of making a MATE video when you left your comment. The video is now available on TH-cam here: th-cam.com/video/YeayM40Vy1Y/w-d-xo.html
Thank you I have Acer Aspire 3 laptop and cannot access and change boot order i've tried to enable but doesn't work Currently has Windows 10 help please if you can anyone David
thank you great video !
Can you install it to the same USB drive? For example I have a 512 stick and I want to test out mint first on a removable disk instead of one of my drives. Thanks.
I did that but I can't boot from it. Always getting error
I am getting an issue, it says, verification failed: (0x1A) security violation. I tired to flash on belanaetcher as well. It worked once but never after that. I was testing out different Linux Distros to see witch one I like and i decided to use mint but now it just says that error for mint (give a similar error for Manjaro).
Maybe disable the secure boot
Super Thank you
Rufus is the only answer
Ercher did not work
does the mirror server depend on the location where you are? because I am from Chile, does it influence the download of the iso image?
The files on one mirror are the same as the files on another mirror. The only difference between mirrors is their location. Downloading from a mirror that is further away from your location will usually take longer than downloading from a mirror that is closer to you. For example, I am in Canada, downloading a file from an Australian mirror would take longer than downloading from an American mirror. If you have any other questions feel free to reply to this comment. Welcome to the channel!
Rufus only works with Windows. What utility is compatible with Linux? I need to upgrade Ubuntu to a newer version.

@@lutetiumtech Done
Help....installed on 3 PCs....but, u never talked about.....1 when I insert the USB I used OEM option and now when I start my PCs it says Temporary User.....why. Please advise.....cheers from Canada....2. On one PC it is alongside XP, and, on the other Linux Mint Cinnamon is all alone on a 500 GB HD.
Hi Elvis. I would not recommend using the OEM option if you are going to be installing Linux Mint on a personal computer. Instead, try clicking the "Start Linux Mint" option. From here, there should be an "Install Linux Mint" Icon on the desktop. Let me know if that helps!
@@lutetiumtech Oh no.....will reinstall all of them and keep u posted....
@@lutetiumtech What or who is the OEM option for?
The OEM option is for computer manufacturers and retailers. It allows a retailer to install Linux Mint onto a computer on a temporary account, then sell the computer to a customer with a completely clean and empty install of Linux.
thank you for teaching me how to install Laynux mint on mu device
you completely skipped telling us how to know which one of the mirrors is best to choose for the best speed! prior to downloading Linux Mint there were like 12 or something I'm extremely confused and do not understand how to proceed
That depends on your location. Choose a mirror that is closest to your home country.
When I select the iso file the file system changes to NTFS
You have to reformat the usb drive first to Fat32
I wish I could turn off the background 'music'.
Otherwise, thanks for the info.

Thank you was very easy
Glad it helped!
I downloaded linex mint rufus for the drive and Zorin ,when I click on any of them that stupid the microsoft store window pops up and asks me what I want to open it up with. Frustrating
Easy to do but rufus for me locks file system to NTFS no fat32 available can i still install from this and i'm having trouble findning boot menu options
Very beautiful
My machine has a nvme m2 ssd and realtek wifi only. wifi driver?
Thank you boss
Perfect! I just did it now ntfsc was on default with 4096 bytes default. Whats that's actully for
Would this work with belena instead of rufus?
Yes! Balena Etcher can be used for creating bootable USB's for most Linux distributions. In the future I may create a video detailing the process with Etcher if there is enough demand. Thanks for your comment!
fat32 isnt an option for me, only NTFS. and everytime I boot it blank screens or flashes so badly an epileptic would have an episode. pls help
The partition on a USB drive that is larger than 32 gigs must be less than 32 gigs to be formatted into fat32. If you have no option to format it in disk management or the format utility, you can force format fat32 using powershell command "format /FS: FAT32 #:" where "#" is the drive letter. This can take hours to complete and is an inconvenient way to format a drive, but it works.
Please help, Rufus only shows NTFS even though I’ve formatted my usb as Fat32 :(
I am having trouble with rufus, a message comes up saying that the image is unsupported and non bootable
Maybe you downloaded the torrent one
Thanks
Glad the video helped!
i cannot even get it to download everytime I try it fails
Thanks !
I knew I needed Rufus. But as stupid as I am I just forgot it, and try boot for the USB with the downloaded.iso inside...
Didn't work !
ISOs need to be properly flashed to a drive to be bootable, so flash software is necessary to configure the drive.
Thank you
Glad I was able to help!
Thanks. I hate Microsoft Windows 10 so much at this point that I was prepared to try this. I created the bootable disk but am worried that if I run it, it will erase windows 10. You didn't say how to run it on the computer without doing that. As bad as Windows 10 is, I have a lot files I don't want to lose.
Ok but what happened to all those warnings about verification and authentication?
How much space left in your usb after you make it bootable with mint iso ?
Please Answer
Linux Mint should take between 2-4 GB of space on the USB stick. I personally recommend an 8 or 16gb USB stick as it gives Linux some breathing room.
@@lutetiumtech thnx bro, I installed Linux mint on my low end pc without any problem and it is working fine
You can NOT use that space at all. It just sits there in a state of total lobotomy. No matter what formatter I tried, it just errors out trying to write a new partition, or wipes the stick totally to make a new blank.
Probably a silly question but it doesn’t matter if it’s a USB C or A flash drive right?
I don't think it should matter but I would make sure its connected to the rear IO and not the front panel, if possible.
Hi I have only one laptop that is dead. No cd drive. USB boot supported. Is there a way I can install any os without using another pc.
Very clear.. ta
does it save your windows data?
if you save and backup your data, then yeah
silly question but do i just turn of my laptop to leave mint on the usb?
Hey Henry, thanks for your comment! Yes, once Linux Mint is installed you can turn off the laptop. On the shutdown screen text will appear when it is safe to remove the usb stick. Have fun with Linux! Welcome to the channel.
I do not need the installer stick! There are tons of these videos around to create an installer. The installer cannot function as a portable main-disk! I tried formatting the left-over space to store data, and it just errors out, no matter what formatter I use.
I need a portable and bootable main-disk, that can also store data! How do I create one, without physically disconnecting my hard-drive and installing Linux on a flash-stick as main drive? That option does not exist in any installers I have tried. Linux is better than Windows in allowing a dual boot, but the separate drive option with the boot-loader also being on the stick and NOT the main machine's drive, so I can carry my main-drive in my pocket, is not in installation options I have ever seen.
You sould have showed the hard part, where you disable secure boot and avoid a bitlocker recover screen when the linux usb is not in.
How to create a Linux mint bootable DVD. Any ideas?
I'm currently turning my old laptop I used during lockdown into a Mint instead of Windows. Should I be using the MBR or the GPT partition when creating the bootable USB or is there no real reason to choose one over the other?
Edit: My laptop is fairly new and is capable of running installing Windows 11 if that helps
MBR for bootable USB
Both should work but it depends on how your bios is set up. GPT should work fine if your bios is already set to UEFI mode. Legacy mode supports MBR only and if one of your OS installations is one and not the other, the bios may not recognize the installation.
Will it be possible to access the files on my hard drive (it's healthy) while using Linux booted from the USB pen drive?
After making USB and booting and confirming "Start Linux Mint" I only have black screen.
generic video driver may be missing for your system. Did you try running the compatibility mode from the boot menu?
@@MrCrazyjoe259 Yes, but id did not solve the issue. But in the end I solved it somwhow but do not remember how.
It's that easy....? Why is the official site giving so many extra instructions that I just can figure out properly...
how to run it after rufus is ready
this does not make a bootable USB - it makes an installer USB - how to make a bootable USB to run as main drive for linux mint?
WHY CANT YOU BOOT DIRECT FROM THE SSD FROM WINDOWS TO LINUX MINT .
You can, just dual boot. GRUB boot loader should be enabled if you installed Linux alongside windows. Make sure that Linux drive is first in the load order in the bios.
WI FI DOESN'T WORK in LENOVO IDEA PAD GAMING 3 15 IAH 7 on LINUX MINT BRO .... CAN YOU HELP WITH VIDEO HOW TO FIX ?
i only have 7gb usb drive is that enough? :( also is there a way to install it dual boot with windows10 without usb? on a GPT disk
Can i plug and use without Uninstall windows i play games on windows
will it completely replace windows after bootloading ??
Not if you're careful and choose to dual boot and install it onto another drive. Linux should use the grub boot loader if the installer detects that you have windows installed already. I highly recommend installing Linux on a separate drive if you dual boot.
