Yeah, South African 🇿🇦 here. Finance Sector Conduct Authority (Out version of SEC) won't pursue charges as Cryptocurrencies are not viewed as financial products. Can't even compel trading platforms to report on Crypto Gains/losses. These investors must feel sick.
South African here. My 'uncle' (technically I'm older than him though), lost a bunch of money on these financial scam deals. At the time, I had no idea about these things, but they always struck me as off.

I find myself asking this question almost daily so I would say yes, people are getting dumber.
Typically, there are two kinds of people. People that don't fall in holes at all. And people that fall in every possible hole as many times as it is real.
Not everyone is diligent enough when it comes to getting rich quick. They often chase the hype and the details get left in the dust. Recently there was some 'discovery' of diamonds in South Africa and lots of poor people flocked to mine it. There should have been dead giveaways that this probably wasn't diamond they size of the pieces were huge and they we at relatively shallow depths.. Basically they were all mining quartz crystals which are no where near the value of diamonds.
I fell in my ex wife's hole after we split up so yeah it does happen

Never underestimate people's greed. All of these scams prey on people's greed and people's willingness to ignore red flags because they think it's a shortcut to riches.
There are two victims in these types of scams: Those who didn’t understand the warning signs and those that did but planned to pull out in time.

As a 52 year old with life experience I don't understand how people willingly give their money to an organizations like these. It should be obvious that these are scams. At best they're should be a sense of doubt about the organization's legitimacy which would normally make someone hesitant about giving them any money.
Can you even imagine how awesome their lives are going to be with 3.6 billion backing them up. If they have any brains at all they are somewhere that won’t extradite them, and are living like kings.
I sometimes wonder why I don’t just go the scammer route, it’s literally the easiest way to get insane wealth.

Sounds like their letter to clients could have been written while one founder was being held hostage and the 2nd was trying to comply with demands while saving his brother's life if possible. Considering the funding and coordination of armed robberies of armored cash-in-transit vehicles in the country where these two operated, it's natural to expect someone would try to entrap one or both brothers. Unfortunately, the truth seems more likely to be something along these lines than the assumption they naively thought they could just disappear with funds. Reread their letter to clients again and consider this context.
I honestly believe there's a much bigger problem behind all of these scams. It's not greed, it's not stupidly (not to be confused with ignorant/naive). I think it shows how truly dysfunctional capitalism is. People are desperate.

Cryptocurrencies were created to avoid transparency and control from government and established banking systems in the first place. And there's still lack of legislation in this area. It's slowly changing though. But yes, you can't expect full legal protection with any crypto at this point. So it may be even worse than old scams. Time will tell.
