After watching many videos on drywall finishing, this is the only video I found where it actually explains how a butt joint is different from a tapered joint (in terms of behavior) and what needs to be done to address that. All other videos just keep talking about "that dreaded butt joint" but never explains why they are "dreaded" (that is, more prone to moisture entering through the tape). This video made a lot of things clear for me. Thank you.
As a drywall taper with over 45 years experience I highly recommend you learn from this gentleman. Although all tapers have small differences in the way we do things the basics are the same. I do not know or have ever met this gentleman who is definitely not a DIY clown but rather a pro! Do not listen to the many DIY non pros on utube as they have no clue.
Dude you're a great teacher, a true tradesman. I'm a professional painter and decent drywaller... Always trying to improve. Thx for the hands on training 👍
A friend of mine borrowed my pole sanders years ago to sand drywall he finished. Soon he brought them back and told me he had to use a belt sander on it !!! Whoa man hold your horses !!! We went down and sanded for four days and when we were done it looked like we plastered it. Always go in multiple light layers. Love your videos ! Thank you !!! I heard the joke about bricklayers because I am also a mason ! ha ha ha !!
Thank you for taking the time to teach us! I subscribed and will watchh all Your videos. been doing taping for 6 months now but I still am having trouble understanding the finishing process. Im an apprentice and work with 1 guy who is my boss but i feel like he doesnt want me to learn the trade because he fears I will leave him. I like how you explain it thoroughly makes me understand it easier.
Get a tall boy pump Ray....you done your time and are at end of your career, your back will thank you! Hey how come they dont taper all 4 sides of drywall?.....in Australia they use 20ft sheets of drywall, less butt joints and they never do ceiling angles, they leave a gap for crown molding, they have it much easier than here
I am replacing some old drywall on the wall but we are keeping the ceiling. The ceiling is textured. How do I tape and mud where the wall and ceiling joint meet so the texture isn't totally messed up on the ceiling?
My professional advice is tape the edge the the wall and ceiling meet and finish it like anything else. Afterwards try your best to match the texture as best you can. That's all you can do. Otherwise if you have popcorn, scare you're whileceiling and start over. Knockdown.... A couple skim coats then re spray the ceiling. But like I said first try and match it the best you can. I know Home Depot has texture in a can that wirks task well for small patches. Hope this helps!
I just had a garage built. Thinking of taping and mudding it myself. I’m not looking for it to be perfect, it’s a garage, not my living room. That being said, would I be fine with one somewhat heavier coat? Or should I at least do two? Live in Chicago and couldn’t find anyone to do the job

👍 Totally right about sanding, I call it a waste of time. Putting too much mud on is just making more work for you.
In the UK 2 coats and sand, job done with a trowel and hawk quick and easy if you can work a trowel

question: if primer could pop the tape loose why doesn't another coat of mud?
It can too

Daniel Morrill, I think we can both agree that the texture in a can is garbage. Hate that stuff
@@charliecoleman4730 yeah I agree that can texture isn't that great. For small stuff it works but bigger areas not so much

Just 10" it and use fiber tape, it's called "fire tapping" and the guys who hung the sheetrock should of done that when house was built
Do two coats, don’t do “one heavy”
I’ve recently started wiping down with a 4 inch knife … Burys my tape coat better then with 8 or 10. I box over and never see any tape
Great video sir!!
The mud box worked pretty well, but the weight of it was too much. I am now hand mudding again. :(
Not calling your guys just saying we do it a little different over here, each to their own but you do a great job
What brand of boxes
