I've done the Porsche fly, buy and drive three times. First was a 944S2 from Wichita to Seattle. Second was a 1987 911 from Tulsa to Seattle, and the third was a 2009 Cayman S from Phoenix to Seattle (done with my son). Each has been a terrific adventure. Jon's story brought back a lot of memories.
    Keep the car!

Great car to D R I V E . The exterior is perfectly imperfect. Love the wheel set. The turbo tea tray doesn't work with the 3.0 badge. Proper 3.0 spoilers are expensive, but would look nice. A smooth rear deck lid would look great and are easy to swap in. Look like a fun keeper - enjoy adding the miles!

Gorgeous car, super shining red! A car to keep and love. New ssi backdated exhaust (sound and performance but still good for cruising). Just a little more stance, whaletale removed and new black carpets, seats with red stiching and central black insert alcantara.! And it’s new love again!

Good interview. I like this sentiment “stock, but better”. Interesting to see the ‘87 next to the 964, the differences in body lines were more apparent than I’d thought.

Will - another great video. Thank you for these owner experience vignettes.
John - love the car. I have owned a 1978 911 SC very similar to yours. Same color same interior same wheels. I tell you the truth about these cars: it is much more fun driving a slower car fast than driving a fast car slow. I wish I still had the ‘78. I have a great 997 that I picked up from Sonderwerks yesterday which they freshened up for me, but there that special quality of an air-cooled. My ‘78 also had the 3.0 engine and I burst out laughing when you described the hot-start problem because I too had the same issue ..... always parked it on a slight incline in order to fascinate a compression start when I was on a road trip or cruise. Personally .... I’d keep the wing because of the late ‘70’s and ‘80’s retro look. Sweet car John.

I flew one way to Philly from Eastern Iowa. Limo up to York, PA. Picked up my GTS and drove straight through to Dayton. Visited the Air Force Museum at Wright Pat and straight through to Iowa. Timed between snow storms. Just a wonderful experience. Road trip! Ya Porsches are made for it. “Ding”. You are free to move about the country...(sort of).

I now have a new wife, old 911, better life. I say to everyone out there - if your spouse refuses to allow you to buy an air cooled 911 after you have covered your bills, think real carefully about your options. Great channel BTW

I LOVE the narrow look of these older cars though. Me personally...it will look awesome without the tail! Thanks for video! Oh, and I would likely ship it home! I am going through the same sell or keep(and put some real $$ into it). Have a 1976 911s, blue metallic, inherited from my dad in 2007; i’’m the third owner. 145k miles on it, a few dings, overall paint is good. Synchro 2-3 is so so, drips some oil at night- don’t they all…. I’m mid 60s, have a left drop foot so shifting is a little of a challenge. No A/C.. all my car enthusiast friends are split on keep or sell. My 37 year old son (in FL) wants it…..

For me, I’ve have always thought that the red and white g cars always looked great with the front and real spoilers and that other colors did not. It has to do with the combination and how the colors affect the lines, curves, dimensioning, and the mind of the observer.

    Nice 911
    I would
    sell the Turbo tail.
Put on a 3.0 carrera tail if you want to look a little more correct. Turbo tail is too large for narrow body cars.
Are those 17" after market Fuchs ?
If so try to go Original Fuchs 7 and 8s.x 15 or 16"
Last I would try and source some Sport Seats from that era.
Yes on making car louder. Ssi sport pipes could be cool.
Great cars no matter what even if you left it as is.

Will, I think I heard him say the car is not a Carerra but is an S? What’s the difference? For example, what is a 3.2 Carrera versus an ‘S’

    • @Rennthusiast
      @Rennthusiast  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

So I *think* the 911S generation came before the SC (“Super Carrera”) which preceded the Carrera. Can be confusing because they are all g body cars with subtle differences but nothing major.
The 911S came with an ill-fated 2.7 liter that had some unfortunate technology that caused many of them to grenade (sound familiar? IMS lol). When they upgraded the engine to the 3.0 from the factory, I believe they changed the name from 911S to 911SC
Due to the engine issue many owners would drop 3.0 liter or 3.2 liter engines into the S generation, confusing the issue even more.
With all of that said, I am no expert and welcome someone to correct or edit my thoughts. I did some light reading on the 911S but doesn’t mean I am an expert.

I have a 99 911 996 and put brand new Bilstein struts and H&M lowering springs...I wanted it lowered a tad...well I don’t know if it’s the struts or springs but I feel very pebble in the road...it’s actually quite terrible...so I don’t know if I should go with coilovers or something else...your feedback would be appreciated...

    • @Rennthusiast
      @Rennthusiast  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Springs can tend to ride rougher than coilovers. The advantage is they’re cheaper to run. The disadvantage is that you will likely notice a drop in ride quality.
You’ll most likely adjust to the new ride. Coming from factory anything will seem stiff...just get familiar with it and rip it through the twisties! 😄

Yes. I run Bilstein PSS10’s on my 993 and they are superb. I have had Bilsteins on other cars I’ve owned and they were good on those applications as well.
On the 993, I would describe them as planted, firm, yet they absorb road imperfections with no drama. The lowering height will be up to you and your shop and there’s plenty of info on the forums about this topics. I went pretty low on mine but the less wheel gap the better in my world. Good luck.

      11. elephant racing bottom/suspension so it can get a proper string alignment and learn how to do that....it is fun
      12. Dress up the engine with new tubing, etc....avoid bright colors like reds and blues (sorry to the TH-cam channel host)...black and silver age well....red is only for calipers and door pulls
      13. Rennline parts on the pedals and floors and other areas....

My car is a silver on black '85, full leather, power sport seats, Fuchs, and factory spoiler package. I've owned it since '96. I put 993 replica wheels on it, and added an OMP steering wheel and shift knob. Other than a pretty badass stereo that was added before I bought it, it's unmolested.
I personally don't like turbo tails on non-turbo cars, (LOVE the tea tray on mine) but complaining about things on other people's cars that you don't like is like a bowling ball. Pointless. If you don't like a particular part, color, modification or what have you, then don't do it to your car, and just keep your mouth shut about cars that aren't yours.

Get rid of the whale!. Lower it, change the seats for period Recaros, clean up the engine and you're good to go. Nice car Jon.

Ditch the tea tray. Lights- remove the funky big rectangular dring lights. If you want lights here, use stock.
Upgrade head lights to the mo betta H-4s
      Now yer rockin👍🐸

If you remove the whale you then have to remove the front spoiler otherwise would you have to much lift at the rear and it will be scary to drive at high speed.

Delete the poser details like the turbo tail and the carrera 3.0 script. It’s still a classic aircooled 911. The non matching 3.0 engine actually gives you the liberty to customize this car and make it even more special. I will start with the mechanicals (engine, suspension, lightening maybe, etc.) and then the aesthetics last like the interiors, paint, etc. Lastly, drive it regularly and squeeze every juice out of it. Enjoy!

Sell it. Someone drinking air-cooled kool aide will buy it and overpay for it. I had a ‘77 911 new. The car was a problem (electrical, leaking windshield, unstable rear end), I can only imagine how painful the car is now, 45 years later. Rust may be a problem. Added on whale tails always say “poser” to me.
