Just an Average Golfer giving unbiased opinions on all things golf, product tests, Golf travel vlogs and golf news!
At 68 Years old, I've lost distance, and have started using an entire set of hybrids and fairway woods. Stigma be damned, because I can defy Father Time for a few more years and enjoy the game. Love your content. Thank you from a fellow "average golfer".
I am continuing to enjoy the new style of content. I switched to full hybrid set last year, 63 y/o, I will take all the help I can get!
I’m 58 and just switched to hybrid irons due to spine issues. I need all the help I can get or I would have to stop playing as I have very little body movement.
Always played to enjoy and will continue to do so as long as I can walk 😊
I use a 4, 6 and 7 hybrid and absolutely love them. I had the 6 changed from 30 degree to 32 and its perfect for shots 140 to 50 yards. It flies very high and drops like a stone so perfect when you want to clear any trouble. Forget what others say and enjoy your golf. Great vid as usual Andy
You continue to amaze me with your fortitude to brave the elements you encounter! A near mortal like myself would cower to that wind! My hat is off to you! Keep plodding onward! Heck of a ride you are taking us on!
Glad you enjoyed it
Love this series, watching a previous episode at portpatrick in Scotland resulted in us visiting the area for a week and rebooking again this year. Keep it up Andy 👍🏻
I am in the United States.
Long time watcher.
I had seen your earlier review of the Eleven clubs.
About a year ago I had asked the "AskGolfNut" TH-camr over their in England to Review the Eleven set.
He was so impressed with them he didn't do his regular 50 shot in-depth review. He hit about 10 shots. Every shot he hit went the same height and distance and spin. And he hadn't hit one in the center of the face.
After seeing another great review on I think Golf Monthly. I decided I should get a set.
Only one problem.
I had just purchased a set of used Ping G425 irons. 5-pw. I clanked them around the coarse all summer. When I had tested them in doors the winter before. They seemed fine. I figured I couldn't go wrong with Pings.
Today at lunch . My wife asked me why I had just sold my Pings the day before.
So i told her the whole story about not liking the Pings and how I had discovered the Eleven clubs . And I was thinking of ordering a set of Eleven's for my Birthday. In May. About the same time courses open back up in the state of Minnesota.
Even though you said you played well with them. I have seen you enough that you are a golf purist.
So if you are not going to game them . Maybe you can send them my way :)
64 deg's . Interesting ....
Well, more snow tonight. Every time it snows. It pushes golf course openings back another week.. They have been closed since Oct 1st. And ice on the lakes is still 18 inches thick :(
I’m in a similar position. I bought a set of Taylormade P790s and whilst they’ve gone well to a certain extent, I’m getting better results with my 5 and 6 hybrids. Pondering what to do now!

Fantastic video production. I'm really enjoying seeing the courses. You're living the dream, Andy!
First video of this series I've caught. Absolutely loved it!
As far as golf for me, I love walking while playing. 1st time on a course score for me doesn't matter. Seeing course for the 1st time can always be tricky, along with all the new views. Turns golf fun again to not count strokes and enjoy nature
I say it every week. Absolutely stunning scenery and great looking golf courses. Andy B is the photo I liked best. I look forward to every adventure in this series. I’d say forget the stigma and embarrassment of carrying hybrids. If it works use it! Keep up the good work
Thanks for continued support and comments 🙏
Great content Andy. I enjoy seeing the out of way UK courses and accommodations. It’s like taking a mini golf vacation while drinking my morning coffee. Keep them coming
We have just moved to South Wales. Took my daughter to Pennard for a lesson and was blown away with views from the clubhouse. You are definitely onto something with enjoyment > scorecard. Any plans to do some Welsh videos Andy? All the best.
Yes I would like to visit Pennard
Andy D takes it this week....Well done...a few audio problems when you were describing the clubs though. What a gorgeous venue this week! Even though it looks cold at least you are playing....here in Canada we have a couple more months of snow before we see grass on the course!
Thanks for feedback but o can’t hear the audio issues?
Andy C
I have always enjoyed the experience of playing golf (with my scores it’s just as well). My best memories are the stunning views, wildlife and comradeship’s associated with golf rather than the good shots (though they were good as well). Well into my seventies and Hybrids are gradually taking over my bag . 😂 just want to keep getting out there, whatever the weather.
Another wonderful video. You are so right about slowing down and enjoying the course for all it's beauty. Thank you for that reminder! I have to go with Andy D for the photo. Keep showing us these hidden gems of golf courses!!!
I play most of the time these days at the Grampians golf course in Victoria Australia, 18 holes sandscrapes. Love watching your stuff. We want to get better and sometimes I surprise myself, mostly not. Keep going.
I like photo #3 from Andy. Love the different venues you play at, most of these courses are more affordable and picturesque as the name brands and pace of play is less crowded. Never played with a full set of hybrids, have hit a few seven irons by different manufacturers and I agree that it takes less effort to play with them
Dumfries and Galloway used to have a golf pass which was excellent value and had some stunning courses Powfoot, Southerness, Thornhill, both dumfries clubs, Lochmaben, Kirkcudbright, Stranraer, Portpatrick. Good Times all worth a visit on your travels Andy.
Thanks for the heads up
@TheAverageGolfer I visited these 10 years ago with my dad. we made 2 or 3 trips great memories. Some to remember him by.
Great video and I agree enjoy the course, the wildlife and dont stress over bad shots, just give your best that’s all you can do. As to the clubs what ever works for you is the way to go. My late father who played off 1 and very consistent gave me the ultimate advice on golf and how to play the game ‘ you have to find your own salvation’.
Another great course, excellent camera work as always. Tracy B is best shot for me. Great format, it’s working well. Re clubs, everyone must use what is best for them, whatever they are, no section on scorecard for clubs used.
Played there in the Shamash Trophy in the early 1970s. Really enjoyed it - good to see it again.
Interesting re hybrid sets!!
Time for a revisit David 👍
@TheAverageGolfer Yes Andy that would be great - maybe this summer with my friend Gavin from Dumfries & Galloway Golf Club.
Come on Andy, you tested the Cleveland Halo irons, you know you can play better with a full set of hybrid irons....Great course and fine production, Thank you for the vacation on the screen. I am stuck in America in the Southwest Desert. I shamelessly play the Cleveland Halo irons and am an honest 9 handicap. Ego has no place in my bag though...
Good on you bud 👏👍
Well done again as usual Andy. What another beautiful place !😍
Probably neck and neck on the photo's ? All were real nice.👍
Lovely quality of videos coming from you and Tracy. It’s great that your getting good sponsors for these trips. So definitely making your mark. Surprised Travel Scotland not got in touch 😊. Hope you dried out.
I only started golfing at around 40 years old (55 now). Have always struggled with irons, so I now have 3,4,5, and 6 hybrids and for me they just instill more confidence and make the game more enjoyable. When it’s time to replace, I would definitely look at a full hybrid set.
Great to have your feedback
Look at the reviews of "Askgolfnut and "golf monthly" they loved the Elevens
Ask golf not has tew shows on them.

I've been golfing for over 70 yrs, part of the fun is the scenery, wildlife exercis and the odd good golf shot (lol), This is the reason it has been my favourite sport for so long.
Another great video. My golf group played Powfoot and Southernness a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed both courses.
Your off the beaten track series' do point me in the direction of places to play. This season we are considering Forfar and Arbroath, two courses I remember you playing a few years ago.
As a 68 year old golfer whose strength and fitness has reduced over the years, I switched to a set of hybrid irons a couple of years ago after trying out a four iron. The long irons are so much easier to hit and the clubs are so versatile, which increases enjoyment of the great game. They do need a little more maintenance and I recommend a set of headcovers to protect the heads from "chatter", but I do enjoy playing with hybrid irons. Quality video as always. Tracy A for me this week.
That’s great feedback from someone with experience of the concept
Another top video Andy. Photo wise, I'd go with Andy d i think. To comment on what you said in the video, for me, off the beaten track is certainly those less well known courses that you are showing people for maybe the first time. For example, southerness - your episode from there inspired me to want to go and play it and just in the last week I have been looking at places to stay near there and maybe go over easter. After this episode, I'm going to try and combine powfoot with it!! Dundonald links was great and is an ace place to play golf but, for me, it doesn't count as part of the 'off the beaten track' series. Keep up the good work at putting a dent in my bank balance!
Another wonderful video! Hybrids seem to be interesting clubs, but I never hit them well. As I cannot choose one photo as best, Tracy A and Andy D are worthy of mention.
I played powfoot last summer - great option if playing Silloth and Southerness as we were. It's a hair below those two tracks IMO but it's superb value and has some memorable and enjoyable holes. Front 9 especially. You need to be pretty straight because many holes have gorse both sides!
Fair assesment and also re the front 9
The visuals plus the music left me with goosebumps. I look forward every week to your upload. Great positive difference between your content and the other golf channels.
As to the course, I would be playing there if I lived in the UK instead of SW France.
As to the photos - it's Tracy every week. Stick to the golf Andy - that's where your greatest contribution lies. Of course that does not mean give up on the photo competition - ot's a welcome feature.
And I love your positive feedback, please keep posting your comments it’s a great motivation 🙏
Where to start . . . First, the quality of these productions (the cinematography, composition, choice of music, etc.) warrant consideration of starting up a side gig and getting hired out to do commercial productions for commercial entities. Second, having roomed in my youth with a friend who wanted to get into movie making, I know that the pre-production prep work is massive, so kudos to you and yours and thank you for putting in such effort in creating these high quality vids. Third, despite the compliment re compositional quality of the vid, I'm going to suggest avoiding placing the pin in shots of the greens in the center of the frame - you might have it to one side (preferably the left since the human eye seems to naturally travel left to right when viewing scenes) and perhaps shoot from a lower angle. But, then again, who am I to judge and the work you do is truly brilliant (in both the British and American senses of the term). Finally, Andy C takes my vote. All the best . . . Oh yes, and with respect to a bag of all hybrids - while it makes sense for many of us to carry them, it seem to me that part of the draw of the sport is the ability to mimic our golfing heroes, sporting clubs that look like theirs and perhaps even carrying the same brands. Evidence of this tribal brand tendency can be found on the hats we wear!
Lovely feedback and notes taken 👍
Andy D for the pic of the week. Love the framing of the flag by the trees in the background. Nice pic! I was playing with a friend of mine who is a 5 index who went with hybrids down to his 7 iron. I'm guilty of making fun of him but he proceeded to beat me down like a nail in a board. I think there is still a bit of a stigma surrounding the use of a hybrid set, but things change. Who knows where we'll end up! My general rule of thumb with conditions is there are 3 of them Rain, Wind and Cold. I'll play through any ONE of them on their own, but if I have 2, I don't play 😃 Looks like you had all 3, way to fight through! Another good video Andy!
All good comments and sense in this feedback!
Bought a set of hybrid clubs recently and have not looked back. Enjoying the game more and shot control is far better. Do not give a jot for what anyone else thinks. I play for fun and these have helped
I currently changed out my long irons for hybrids. (3,4,5,6) and kept my normal irons and wedges. It makes golf so much easier and more fun.
I played Powfoot back in October with two friends. We went up there for Ryder Cup weekend and played it along with Kirkubright and Dalbeattie - all great tracks
Tracy A this week Andy, makes me want to plan some days away this season if it ever dries up. Playing Dunstanburgh soon and there are lots of good courses up in the North East/ Northumbria/ Cumbria to visit
My favourite part of Monday evening, the average golfer off on another trip I'm going for Andy D this week
Thank you for continuing to watch 👏👍
I loved Powfoot when our society was on tour in that area with Southerness and Silloth the other courses. Looks like you are off to Silloth next- we had much better conditions though!
It's a great area to play golf with others around Dumfries & Galloway
I’ve been playing a mixed set which has become very popular. 6-per but no hybrids. I use a 3,7 and 9 wood in the fairway. Moved up a bit also, playing around 6000 yards. Great job as usual Andy.
Tracy B is my pick this time around
Thanks for sharing!
I'm hearing a lot of good things about Eleven hybrid clubs. I do have a full set of Majek hybrids which I like. I recently bought a used set of Wedgewood hybrids that I look forward to trying. It's still too cold here in Maine (USA) and our golf course doesn't open until March 28th! I'm getting antsy to play again and get my practice net set up in the backyard! I collect old iron sets for fun and I enjoy playing irons and hybrids!
I’ve played a set of Cobra Transition S Hybrids on and off for years, I’d switch back to normal irons, just find myself going back to hybrids. Being a clubmaker I built a set of Cleveland HiBore Hybrids, the switched back to normal Taylormade Burner Plus Irons and not liking them, switching to Cleveland HB Turbo Hybrids this year and won’t be switching back to normal irons. The issue I have with is not ascetics on how I look or my golf bag or the clubs look, it’s the lofting. Most popular brands don’t have that 3 hybrid in 17* to 19* because the 4 hybrid is always 20*. Then when you get to the pitching wedge it’s 44* and most popular brands don’t off a dual or gap wedge, so you end buying wedge set that good brands start at 52* and not 50*, so you end up 8* of loft between you pitch and gap wedge with 56* and 60* finishing your wedges. Great looking clubs and great video. In my opinion #1 channel for all golfers of varying playing ability. Thanks
I started playing with hybrids four years ago and currently looking to up grade. If it weren’t for hybrids, I probably wouldn’t be playing anymore. Enjoying the beautiful surroundings is almost an outer body experience as you can leave all that weighs on your mind and saddens the heart behind for a few hours.
I had thought about a hybrid set but purchase a one length club set instead. Had been playing with a one length iron before the purchase. I had used hybrids woods and felt comfortable doing so. But I do like the one length set.
Great episode once again Andy, really looking forward to next weeks episode as we were out playing at Silloth that day as well.
Scotland, James Braid design and you have a bag of hybrids Andy. Would be refreshing to see you try golf as it was meant to be played. A nice set of 1970's blades and some persimmon woods perhaps? That way you might find a new appreciation for the game and it might surprise you to find the old clubs are soon mastered
Been there and done that bud 👍played Kilspindie with hickory, lots of fun as was this
Another wonderful piece of work, Andy. Looked and sounded a bit ‘wild and woolly’ for my liking, but I think that just added to the atmosphere. I’m on hybrids below my 7i now, and after it flatly refused to come out to play the last couple of times, I’m thinking its days are numbered too! The concern I have is that all the main options seem to have finishes that look none too robust, so even taking the best of care I think they’ll look a bit second hand in no time. Photo wise, difficult this week. I think it’s a score draw. Extra time next week then?
Myself & Coops are playing Peebles, Dalmahoy & The Glen when we are up there for The Open July. So, thanks for pointing us in those directions. 😬👍🏽
I purchased full set of Cleveland Halo XL FULL FACE. I have to say my game has massively improved. Had 2 holes in 1 last year and it was due to a bit of luck obviously but these clubs are so easy to hit and get up in the air.
Love the work, the polish is really telling in the final output, making it fantastic to watch. I would love to know the backing music you use, really loved the opening piece. Andy C this week for the picture. I don't have any hybrid's in my bag as I've only just come back to the game and my old set is still in good condition, especially after I replaced the grips. I have a Garmin watch for use with my other sports and it will track shots for me, not always 100% acurate but close enough that I can forget about scoring and enjoy the walk, mostly on parkland courses near me. I'm not far from Church Streton and the Long Mynd so will be arranging a round there with my Son in Law, one of the reasons I got back in to the game was to get to know him better and have some guy time 😅
Hello Andy , thank you again for your video. I prefer to play my irons as long as i can
After seeing you play at Church Stratton Golf Club I’ve got to say I really fancy that! Love the content mate 👍⛳️
Tracy A did It for me Andy. Another great Vid by the two of you. Keep It up.
Tracy B best for me. Currently trust my fairway woods more than my hybrid which puts me off the hybrid set a bit. Would be nice to try a demo set but they are very rare….
Great content again mate. I need that set of clubs 😂 my bag is a driver 3 4 5 hybrid 6 7 8 9 PW then some wedges and a putter. My fav club is my 5 hybrid. I would quite happily game a 6 and 7 hybrid too and just have 8 9 PW and wedges
Yeah you are a a big fan of them and I reckon most of us would benefit.
@@TheAverageGolfer absolutely. No shame in using them. They are the easiest clubs to use
1-2 hybrids is plenty in my bag. I still love to flush an iron after my drive.
Love seeing your beautiful travelogs!
As far as those clubs are concerned, you couldn't pay me to play them but to each their own.
Great video as always Andy. Those eleven hybrid sets seem to get good reviews from everyone thus far. That is another pretty course as well, love the history of the german bomb crater too. I will have to go with Tracy B, sorry Andy.....😊
awesome series! Those Eleven hybrids are definitely interesting. I would game them for fun.
Andy C this week. Andy, question for you and maybe your viewership. Maybe for another day.
Rakes in or out of bunkers?
My personal preference is out. Clubs put them in for the aesthetics. To hide them from view. 1: I hate getting sand on my hands. 2: I hate that my ball ends up next to a rake where it might have rolled to a better lie within the bunker. 3: Wet sand makes it all worse trying to keep your hands clean. 4: Golfers tend to toss rakes back in, which can lead to poorer lies for the next golfer.
Very good point, based on your logic, which I agree with, they should be on top of the bunker? What do you think? 🤔
Great comment about letting the club do the work. At 52 I’m at that point of having to keep my ego in check and accepting that I need to let go of looking to whack everything as far as it can go.
Question Andy I was considering Wilson Staff CB iron but after watching should I be considering something more like the Cleveland Halo or the Cobra t rail irons? I still get it out some way (260/270yrds) but would value your thoughts. Oh sorry And ‘Tracy d’ has it this week 😁🤘🏻🇦🇺
I love the point about enjoying the layout of courses between shots. Thats what bothers me so much about golf in the states. Way too much of golf played while riding in carts. Great work as always.
I play with a set of eleven hybrids. There is no doubt they make the game easier. They are also very reasonably priced. You cant go wrong with them.
Sorry Andy, Tracey A. I've played Powfoot - Absolutely smashing course with good food and a friendly clubhouse. Went there and back in a day for a match. Few holes before lunch, played the match and headed home victorious, so fond memories. Not, perhaps, the best time of year to visit...
The hybrids looked OK. I've no issues with a bag full of anything so long as it gets the job done.
That’s a decent memory John, sounds like a good day out
I thought, I won't keep this to myself.... @@TheAverageGolfer
Andy great video as always the courses you and the wife go to are just outstanding as well as the photographs you both take ...a friend of mine plays a full set of hybrids and enjoys them I have a couple in the bag ..how do you like the eleven hybrids I was thinking of buying one myself...keep up the awesome work..peace
Thanks for such positive feedback 🙏
Another awesome video - and this week I’m selecting Andy D for my fave photo. This may be my first vote in your favor!
Played their Open about four years ago. Overdue a visit
Played here in an open pairs comp. Weather was that bad we never saw the Solway Firth
I played Powfoot last October and agree the views and course are only beaten by the friendly staff in the clubhouse
I’ve been telling a friend that he’d benefit from a hybrid set, but I think he’s a little turned off by what his golfer friends might say. But hybrid sets should be starter sets for beginners. Maybe golf clubs could keep them on hand for new golfers to try out.
Great course, great series, beautiful video production.
Tracey B - i do play and sometimes stay in the places you visit - Buenavista and The Ducks to name two. Like this series
Another fine episode. Nice looking clubs. Tracy A for me.
Tracy a for me. I was fitted for T-Rail Cobra clubs, a bit like hybrids. I enjoyed them, but got a chance to try Taylormade P790s and never went back.
Interesting you went back 👍
Yes, I would certainly game those hybrids. I've been a single figure golfer for over 50 years, but I think they would be especially good in the winter on wet parkland courses for just about everyone..
It's a draw on the photos this week - terrible conditions for scenic shots!
Absolutely
Another fine episode Andy. I’ve not seen a bad review yet of these clubs, but at the same time none of the reviewers have put them in their bag….. Personally, I can see that I could use these to a 7 hybrid and then more usual clubs from 8 onwards. photo ‘Andy C’ for me this week.
Lee Jones (GolfNutts) home club that Andy. Are you going to play that gorgeous course over the estuary whilst you're up there? Silloth, such a great course and one not to miss whilst you're up there 👍👍👍 ahhh there it was, a sneaky peek right at the end 😉
I didn’t know that
Great filming!
A set of hybrids is an interesting approach. Another approach is the adjustable Q Club…you know it? I just received mine and look forward to check it out
Let me know how it goes
@@TheAverageGolfer I shall do for sure 👍
Andy D for the pic, but it was close with one of Tracy's for sure.
I was SO PLEASED when the map popped up - I've been meaning to comment that I'd love to see a map each time; I'm in the US and have no chance of knowing where any of the courses might be by name alone (without some serious Google Map research, at least)!
Also, if someone else has a concern over what equipment I'M using, well, good luck to you sir or madam but I cannot think of a single think I could care less about!
"andy c" would be my choice for photo of the week. As for a full set of hybrids - I would consider them as for when I retire or my swing slows down to a senior speed.
Thanks for input 👍 appreciated
Beautiful course even better in summer
Tracy c sorry 😂😂😂 played there a couple of years ago weekend away on golf weekend on way upto Dumfries really good course and still does look good , great vid 👍
Super condition for time of year 🙏
Andy C. Nice work again!
Ps assuming it’s Siloth over the bay that you are talking about? Been on our wish list for a while too.
Another enjoyable watch. Thank you. My vote is for Andy C.
Andy A for mine, thanks for the superb content.
Tracy a for me this week watched Liam this week went to siloth 9 hole and dunnerholme 9 hole
Tradition old courses run by members , have you ever played these ?
Andy where did you get the great music sound track at the beginning? It sounds like the kind of music we call Appalachian mountain music and later Bluegrass, created by the descendants of English, Scottish and Irish immigrants who came over to the North American continent around 1600 and landed in the southern Appalachian and Great Smoky mountains running north-south in the eastern side of the continent. You yourself might have fun looking into the history. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appalachian_music
Powfoot and Southerness are great tracks. I would have a go at a hybrid set, send me those once your done with them..!
Tracy B..
😂👍
Thanks for great video really enjoyed it
Cheers
Hopefully you got to see the game yesterday!!! 😀😀😀
I’ve got Parkinson’s and just had back surgery but I’m a sprightly 50 something so still super keen to play, I’m thinking that a set of hybrids might be just what I need? With my restricted mobility.
Heading to Scotland in July. Staying near Ballater, any course suggestions??? Thanks!
I've exchanged my 5i for a 5h recently but for now that's as far as I need to go towards the short end of the bag at 54
One quick question, what kind of golf shoes are you wearing?
Great photos
Many thanks
Love the vid mate! Keep up the good work
Cheers Dan 👍
A few years ago the local PXG recommended me to do all hybrids but I couldn't bring myself to it.
Love the content keep it coming, Andy C
Tracy B for me. Great course.
