  • In response to further queries, (for which, my humble thanks) I'm attempting to demonstrate how I have developed my version of this song and accompaniment pulling the melody out of the three/four chords.
    This song is by Guy Clark/Shawn Camp and was released on Guy's Album "the Dark" in 2002.
    I suggest that you watch the following versions :
    Guy's recording : • Guy Clark - Magnolia ...
    Shawn Camp's version: • Shawn Camp | Magnolia ...
    Verlon Thompson's version : • Verlon Thompson - "Mag...
    And here is my version wtih Mando Bob and Ian the bass, filmed in 2017 - a few days before my throat cancer treatment started - as you see, I was somewhat more "cuddly" back then, and, of course, my voice was so much better.

    Wow 😳 what a nice guy you are Andy and such a great musician,you sing beautiful and that guitar just sings along with you,this video will help me complete and tidy up this beautiful song that I started learning a few days ago after hearing you sing it in another video here on TH-cam,I play it with the capo on the second fret just like yourself and my favourite part of the song is when you play the chorus with Am chord and if I'm correct you said that's not how the original is played wow you've arranged a beautiful song and made it sound even more beautiful,I'm new to your channel and in the such a short time iv learned so much ,Many many thanks Andy for all this help 🙏

    You have a beautiful version of this great song, I’ve been playing and singing it for years, and it’s a song everyone loves..
    The beautiful thing about music is, we are all unique individuals…therefore have our own interpretation of a song, and it’s very satisfying to work out a tune, both playing and singing, though painstaking at times.. it will ultimately make you better.
    Verlon Thompson sure added an awful lot to Guy’s music, with his beautiful guitar playing…
    Shawn and Guy came up with a true masterpiece as far as I’m concerned, and being from Arkansas, I’m awfully proud of Shawn..
    Sorry about rambling, but I appreciate your work, and willingness to share with others, keep it up..

    I count myself very fortunate to have seen Guy Clark play the Cambridge Folk Festival, a long time ago now around the time of Cold Dog Soup, but I still remember that show, what a treat. Great songs have a life of their own. As you so rightly say, you have to learn to play them your way. You do this one justice and then some. Thanks for sharing.

    Thank You Andy. This was so very helpful. I have been working at putting the melody into a strum rather then just strumming. Just to add to the tune. What a beautiful song and your video was over the top helpful. Thank you kindly. Now to practice it so I can play it out.

    Apart from the content -which is fascinating ref Guy C etc Shawn camp etc and different ways to play, I passed / shared yr vid to my brother and thought that you were playing a Lowden (cos he does!) but I am not sure it’s a Lowden- but whatever it is (? ) It has a great sound and also of course the way you play..perhaps you could settle that one. Love the way you approach the advice to play...very different and will help me I am sure..I woke up with this song in my head and tried to work it out (within my limitations) so that is how I came across you..and very glad I did. Thanks and subbed...

      Hi Chelsea, glad you liked it. I'm sorry but I can't "see" music as tablature, but if you get the melody in your mind, then try playing the chords and "feel" the melody from within the chords. That way,your fingers will learn to play the melodies which are almost always within the notes within the chords. Hope that helps .

    Andy that was great very informative. I was wondering how you would play an old rock tune like say Johnny B Goode and an old country song like swinging doors. If you play those type of song I would love to hear your version. I have been trying to change my style of playing from strumming to something a bit more refined. Thanks

    • @SillyMoustache
      @SillyMoustache  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bernie, sorry for dealy in replying. I wouldn't do a Chuck Berry number as I really feel that his lead riffs are more important and I'm just not that kind of player. Swinging doors? Pretty basic 3 chord deal- I'd probably do it in a sort of bluegrass style, but you never know! Thanks for watching.

    Andy, thanks for these videos. Magnolia Wind is a beautiful song than evokes much reflection on life with one's partner and you play it well with a certain poignancy. I've had a thought for a follow-up to these videos and that would be finding harmony to the melody. One thing I see you do is play a few individual notes here and there between either a strum or a bass note to the chord. I've been working on that as a way to emphasize a part in the song. I try to pick a few notes that harmonize to the melody or sometimes I might play the actual individual melody notes I'm singing. Does this make sense as a way to perform a song? Thanks.

    • @SillyMoustache
      @SillyMoustache  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John, I think it makes sense, although I'm not sure how I can add to that. As I said in my "Finding the melody Pt.1" the notes of the melody is almost always within the root scale and usually starts on the root note or the 3rd or 5th, which, of course are also the harmony notes. Am I on the right track?

    • @johnfauss1562
      @johnfauss1562 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andy, thanks for your reply. Yes, I see what you mean. I guess it's up to the individual performer to work out these harmonizing notes on the guitar, in a way that adds to the performance.

    • @SillyMoustache
      @SillyMoustache  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I suppose so. I have developed a strong voice and had a fair range before my throat cancer. I could often starts song melody higher , say the fifth, than, say the third when I felt like it. Now my range is much reduced and about a tone lower, and I have to concentrate on singing in tune, because my gullet (?) is so much narrower and I can't open my mouth so wide. However, when Mando Bob sings with me he tends to pinch the melody line so I have to immediately react and go higher or lower - I "hope" it adds to the performance but I'm not always convinced.

    I always find it interesting how native English speakers sound very American when the sing (especially Southern singers!). My mother is from London, so I grew up hearing her accent (which isn't that pronounced). But I grew up in the American South and live there still!

    • @SillyMoustache
      @SillyMoustache  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marcus, that is most interesting. I am "very" English/British/European, but my music is very much American influenced. One of my first interests was bluegrass, and I always tried to simulate (?) an appropriate south-eastern US accent for that, and later, after '93, my main intersts were the Texas singer -songwriters and so I tried to adopt a similr accent for such songs. (I have visited Texas twice and have many frinds from there. I try to identify East Texas from D/FW and the Big Bend are etc., Currently, I'm more influenced by Appalachian type music.
