My heart breaks for Yun Tianming, I mean Will Downing, such a perfect portrayal for our future gigachad by Alex Sharp. He knocked it out of the park! The chemistry between Alex and Jess is believable to me.
"That's not Will!" - well... about that... Will Downing is a Gemini, June 6th. Oh! That hospital scene between Jin and Will brought me to tears T_T Then even more tears between Saul and Will. God it's just sooo good!
I find the Will Downing in a origami boat scene under a cloudy rainy sky was so poetic. Yun means Cloud, Tian means Sky and Ming means Clarity/Brightness. Poetry in motion.

Gotta say I really hope they get season 2 and more, I really liked ths show (just finished it 20 minutes ago).
The extra scenes they needed to come back and shoot were actually the bar scenes in the first episode - (it was mentioned in the "ReelBlend Podcast" video from 2 days ago with the showrunners(timestamp 16:25)) - to set up the notion that the science was broken and show the graphs on the phone, and to set the dread of Auggie's countdown, to signify why its serious - I guess in the first cut we only see the countdown first time when she is riding the train and it probably didnt work with the focus groups).
I agree with you that Will's story was a highlight and overall i really loved the characters - before the show i was sceptical about them and I thought it would be a gimmick to have 5 protagonists, but it worked out really well. Really loved all the symbolism around Will, the fish in the tank, oof.
Final scene with Ye Wenjie at the sunset was very beautiful. And all the scenes with young Ye Wenjie stood out as well, they really managed to make those scenes distinct with the sets.
My only complaints (spoilers obv) are :
    1) Might be a nitpick - but the flickering stars at the end of Ep1 looked like a blurry PNG image, it really looked flat and blurry for me.
    2) When watching I wad quite confused at the mechanics of Tatiana's killing of Jack at the end of Ep3. I thought that maybe she was a projection especially with her disappearing into pixels in the camera feed, it was silly, really pushed my suspension of disbelief and taking science-fiction seriously. I get it now that she just drove there physically and the footage was cleared by the alien sophons, but at the time of watching it wasnt clear to me so I really thought that she might be a projection and didnt like that.
    3) Unfortunately Thomas Wade's dialogue was quite unnatural imo. I could feel that the writers came up with a lot of "cool" and quippy and clever lines for him that he would be able to tell at a high speed when they wrote the scrpit. But in the final result is sounded weird and unnatural, you could really feel that he is just a movie character, not a real person.
But overall, i really liked it, hope for S2.

Well said. I definitely felt the same way regarding the flickering. It just didn’t quite look…right. 🤷‍♂️ And Wade was hit or miss for me as well. Overall, pretty good tho.

    • @gosnooky
      @gosnooky 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

True, no one hates sci-fi adaptations more than sci-fi fans. Same goes for fantasy. People just get really attached to the way the stories are written in the source material, and how their mind's eye interprets it all - anything different is an abomination. Realists like us know of the difficulty of adapting complicated plots to the screen, and the budgetary constraints producers must operate under.

i agree with almost everything you said. The last three episodes were definitely my favorites, 1-5 felt so rushed and skipped a lot, almost only scratching the surface on most plotlines. Without much buildup, it felt like there was way less mystery and horror.
In an interview D&D also said they consider the first book the weakest and if they reach the "Red Wedding" equivalent (we all know what thats gonna be) they will be good. I feel like that really shows in the first season, as if they wanted to get the setup out of the way to get to the Dark Forest as fast as possible, but could have at least given Ye Wenjie more time, because she is the catalyst for everything. I'm also sad what they did to my boi Da Shi :(
Despite that i'm also hopeful, really liked all the foreshadowing for whats to come

Keep in mind DnD like things to be really fast, they wanted to make only 7 seasons not even 8 from game of thrones, which is wild. We definitely could have used an extra episode or 2

Been waiting for a video from you on this all day! Yay! Season 1 was great, was I watching the same show as those negative reviewers? Also, the quantum immortality bit being included was definitely very clever foreshadowing.
The show is so good. It dropping all at once is a double edged sword, we don't get to speculate and such between episodes, but we do get to binge it.

I have thoughts about the pacing of season 2 (if we get one). Book spoilers follow....
    .
    .
    .
    .
I'm having trouble figuring out how they're going to cram all of the Crisis Era into a single eight-episode season. I'd imagine that the finale will involve the droplet attack and the start of Deterrence, but somehow they will need to work Raj (as Zhang Behei) and his commandeering of Natural Selection, and the Battle of Darkness that follows into the season as well - this microcosm of the dark forest should be shown at the same time as Saul's gambit to have the most impact. Perhaps they can fit all that into an hour-long season finale, but LOTS has to happen in the first seven episodes for it all to make sense.
I also wonder what they plan to do with Jin, since her story doesn't really start until well into the Deterrence Era. I'd be OK with them putting her under midway through the season, but I don't see them benching a lead character like that.
They will need to have Ding Yi in the show. Some on Reddit think Auggie will fill that role, but I don't see that, since she doesn't have his expertise, and knowing he dies at the beginning of the Doomsday Battle means that it should not be Auggie. Some Reddit posters will celebrate this, but she will need to be there at the end, perhaps to fill the role of AA. For Ding Yi, I always imagined Francois Chau (Juels Pierre Mao from the Expanse). He'd be perfect.
Plot points that I don't see happening:
    1) Luo Ji's "dream girl", since Auggie will fill that role. Thank GOD.
    2) Raj/Zhang Behei shooting the proponents of chemical-based rocketry to make way for fusion engines. It's critical to the plot, but I have a feeling they'll gloss over this somehow.
    3) I can see escapism/defeatism being heavily redacted due to time.
    4) The mental seal - kind of goes along with the previous point. It is the reason that Raj/ZB is selected for Natural Selection, but I can see Wade pulling the strings necessary to put him on that ship. Plus, with one fewer Wallfacer, the entire Bill Hines character (and wife) can easily be written out, and its plot elements transferred to someone else.
All in all, looking forward to the next season. Fingers crossed.

I think you're on track for a lot! I do think Auggie will Play a role in Saul's story, just tweaked to make more palatable and less of the dream girl scenario bc... yikes 😆 I hope they focus a lot on Raj and escapism / defeatism.

As of right now, no Bill Hines doesn't equal no seal.

as a non book reader, i was totally swept away by the hard scifi elements of the show... the speculatory tech and fermi paradox stuff were amazing and really made me want to read the books instantly.
that said, the showrunners still have a bad rep from how badly they mangled game of thrones, especially s8... and i can't help but wonder how many characters and dialogue got dumbed down for the adaptation.
for you as a book reader, is there any chance of doing a non-spoilery breakdown of changes from the book? you mentioned some of the changes here, but i suspect there's a LOT more that D&D changed, especially all the major setting shifts away from china?

    • @roadtotarvalon
      @roadtotarvalon  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

💜 as far as changes, there a lot, but mostly in what was cut from book one. Ye's time at Red Coast base could cover hours worth of TV, and her time after leaving more. The 3 Body game goes deeper into things. A handful of characters don't show up until the last book but we go back in time to cover their origins. It would probably take me a whole series of multiple episodes to cover it all. It's an incredible series if you like all the science. I can't recommend it enough.

I have so many thoughts…. I cannot possibly describe them all at this time 😂 But I essentially agree with you, Amber. Overall, I’m pretty happy with season 1. Will was definitely a standout for me as well. I must admit, I was a bit worried during episode 1 as the story was feeling a bit rushed. But then I realized, I was probably feeling like that because I’m a fan of the Tencent series. And they take HELLA time to tell the story 😂 But yeah, overall, very excited. It’s definitely not a beat for beat adaptation of the books, but it was really good. Think I’m gonna re-watch it now 😁

I got a lot to say both positive and negative but for now let me just say Zine Tseng as young Ye Wenjie CRUSHED it, destroyed it! I know her story was compressed but her performance was so much more powerful than the Tencent version.

I personally didn't like Will, but I'm glad you guys gave him importance. Hopefully, the broader audience will like him too. In all honesty, his book counterpart wasn't much to my liking either. He's definitely portrayed a bit stronger here, though I have a huge issue with the fact that this is supposed to be a love story that crosses the stars between him and Jin Cheng. Yet, Jin shows barely any romantic interest in him, and he's kind of in the sidelines the whole time kinda of a cuck.
Jin Cheng, on the other hand, came off as a much more capable character than her book counterpart, which is great. I don't understand why we needed Saul; we could have had a Luo Ji.
I loved the pacing, honestly. For the first season, I think the concepts and stories in book one might be a bit slow for a TV audience, though we definitely need 10 episodes for books 2-3, where things require more time and gravity tho I don't think we will get it.
The show excelled at portraying the trisolerans and how creepy an alien encounter can be, their projection and fear of humanity, their gaslighting. Not sure why they are not calling them trisolerans hopefully the name evolves.

SAN-TI = 三体 = Three Body = original Chinese title of first book. You have to be fucking kidding me if you don't think San-Ti is more appropriate than long ass name such as Trisolaris. As a matter of fact, San Ti is what people refer to the whole story in China.
Being sidelined is basically what happened in the book, it's even worse in the book because the guy was barely even friend with the girl. It was just all one sided unrequited love. In the show, he's at least very good friends with her.
Surprise how they updated Hu Wen (John Bradley's Jack Rooney) and also gave him such a better depiction than like what? 2 paragraphs in book 3?

As for why they have Saul Durand instead of Luo Ji? I dunno, maybe it's the diversity requirement? It'll definitely draw in more viewers who identify with Saul Durand. The goal of the show is to appeal to all sorts of people on Earth and it's working. You don't think Raj Varma is attracting the people from his home country? I love Luo Ji just like everyone else who read Dark Forest but I think Saul is more than sufficient portrayal of main essence of Luo Ji, a womanizer playboy genius who has not yet lived up to his potential. I think Jovan Adepo is great in this role, heck, I think everyone did a fantastic job. Even Eiza, who many who think she's the weakest did a decent job. Again, that's all my opinion, so I don't expect everyone to feel the way I do.@@konstantinkrastev4478

Will is a person who begins to cherish his own life upon facing the reality of his terminal cancer diagnosis. He is a human that the San-Ti (Trisolarans) can deeply empathize with, given their experiences as survivors of Chaotic Era calamities, as later acknowledged by Sophon to Thomas Wade (Sophon told Wade the San-Ti were really looking forward to meeting Will and were disappointed at the Staircase Project's "failure"). Moreover, Thomas Wade's assessment that Will was the ideal candidate for the task holds true, as evidenced by his refusal to pledge allegiance solely to humanity, opting instead for an oath to Jin (His best friend). Will's act of defiance towards humanity captured the attention and intrigue of both the San-Ti and the Sophon.

I enjoyed the series, enough so that I’m seeking reviews, breakdowns, etc about it.
I really wish someone would get into the actual limitations of the Sophons. They just seem powerful enough to wipe us out in our current level of technology. It seems like they could launch all our nukes for example. Why are important people still using planes???
Episode 5 hit different for me than everyone else it seems too. Why was Auggie there for the execution of the plan? She’s not military and actually poses as a potential failure point by being there. I get it drives the narrative of intentions for tools being twisted and giving that character guilt for her arch but the writing of it took me completely out of it. I guess I was wrong about it being a Ghost Ship knock off

The show is fine, they spent their money well but they rushed everything too much from the first book Which resulted in less suspense, fear. Its understandable that book cant be adapted completely but some more episodes and pacing it downing a lil could have been better. I really liked young wenjie time-line.
I think what we have here is an lil above average show for a wider audience, for which alot science-based explanations and scenes were removed from the books. Overall i did spent my time watching it and ill wait for second season, hope they improve in it.

It put me in a state of mind that I dont remember being with another tv show and I enjoyed the majority of the adaptations. Wade, Jin, Will and Saul were awesome. The worst thing in this series is how unbearable Auggie's character is, mainly in the first chapters. The exposition on her background at the bar was poorly written, throwing in totally unnecessary woman empowerment cliches. Even lip sync issues were noticed all the time. When she tries to pull out of the nanotech company the CEO threatens her with the "employment visa" - SERIOUSLY, I guess that only goes to show that the British still think they matter. I also don't think Ye Wenjie's motives for calling the aliens were well told, as they are FAR more complex and meaningful than just her dad dying.

The first several episodes felt so rushed and I didn't see the motivation buildup of characters. Well, it looks like a Hollywood product to me. The main story line got simplified by a lot. I still prefer the Tencent version of three bodies, which was a faithful adaptation of the original book.
