I heard her Norma at the Lyric in Chicago about 12 years before this production. She filled that very large house with immense and immensely beautiful sound and, as can be heard here, she acted with her voice and knew how to use gestures and stillness of movement very well. I have seen other Normas [unfortunately not Sutherland] but Deutekom's is the one that remains as the best in my memory.

She’s crazy good doing everything she can with her instrument. Meaning what a singer can master through vocal development. Few have mastered that before or after.
i love her!!! even past her prime she doesn't stop impressing! she must've been in her mid 50s and still doesn't shy away from that high note at 6:37 like i've heard lots of other sopranos do (who are still fantastic nonetheless). bravo!!!
@@danielng7795 you're right, i made it seem as if it's written which is my bad. but given how popular it is to interpret a high note at the end of every aria, it surprises me more sopranos don't do it. she the only one i know of

I saw her sing Norma in Seattle. After having been at Sutherland's very first Norma here in Vancouver it was a bit disappointing. The tenor was the same - John Alexander.
Non male , me l’aspettavo con più rifinitura degna della sua bravura, Norma è un opera insidiosa, non basta la voce, bellissima, fraseggio, tempo più Belliniano ed interpretazione, ne avrebbero fatta una degna erede di Maria Callas, a livello vocale qualche infelice stonatura. Ma ce ne fossero ora di questo livello.
😆😆😆 certo a fare le pulci alla Deutekom con questa sontuosità vocale ci vuole coraggio considerando soprattutto lo sfacelo delle Norme attuali, gallinelle dalle voci smunte e asfittiche. Basterebbe l'omogeneità del registro dal sovracuto al grave senza alcuna cesura e con la stessa intensità sonora per farne oggi un prodigio. Ci possono anche essere delle giornate in cui si può non essere perfettamente in forma. Ma il materiale è talmente prezioso che chi se ne frega di qualche sbavatura. Tra l'altro qui credo sia già parecchio avanti negli anni di carriera.
@@asterflamm che poi onestamente troviamo anche tra le grandi del passato una soprano che a 56 anni (o anche 30) avesse trilli, 3 registri, un repertorio dalla regina della notte al nabucco… mi basterebbe un singolo nome
