I got one of these today, it sounded ok, I took the pickguard off, which is about 3/8 in. Thick and pretty big, I also put bone bridge pins in it. Then I took out the pickup and preamp and stuff. Good lord, this things sounds absolutely amazing now ! I’m blown away ! It reduced the weight by a half pound or so, maybe more, wildwood guitars had this guitar set up better than perfect, I’m very picky and nobody on earth could have set up this guitar better.

Excellent, honest and, above all, trustworthy review Ben. Refreshingly direct content to cut though the sponsored agendas of so many other reviews which make it so bewilderingly difficult to make truly informed decisions. My mates love it too who will spread the word! If you could find your way to do a review of a Takamine EF360STT or a Seagull S6 (as a budding fingerpicker) I'd appreciate that.

That guitar sounds spectacular (based on hearing it through recorded audio, of coarse), regardless of where it was made. If I got that guitar, the first thing I would probably do to it would be remove that Fishman deal and put an LR Baggs Anthem in it...or even a LR Baggs Lyric (like an Anthem except with just the mic & no piezo undersaddle...I use very little to no undersaddle anyway when using the Anthem...just way prefer a real mic sound...)....thanks much for taking the time to post this video and preparing the content of it...hope you and yours are well to all at Acoustic Review!

Great, informative review as always Ben, much appreciated. Any plans to review the new Texans, both the US built one, and the cheaper masterbilt version? I always wanted a Texan in honour of my guitar hero, the legendary Wizz Jones. Sadly, I could never afford an original vintage, and the recent cheap 'inspired by' version - made in Indonesia or Malaysia I believe - was diabolically awful.

Recently bought one of these and this review is spot on. "well built guitar, familiar tones". Yes, I also own a 2001 Gibson J-45. This guitar doesn't sound exactly like that one, the Epiphone J-45 is actually about a pound heavier, but it has the dry focused mid-range and great intonation... In my book, this model at $749 (USD) is the modern day workhorse from Gibson. A quality, all solid guitar at a reasonable price. The Gibson J-45 (which cost 3.5x as much) is more a luxury guitar prouct. This specific Epiphone model and really all of the master built line and Inspired by Gibson line are instruments that you can gig with. Get a great sound, have a very playable guitar and you don't have to worry about $3000 walking off the stage in the hands of a thief... The Sonitone pickup is garbage and my frets needed a bit of care as well, but that was all of 45-minutes of work.

@@phyfts The Gibson J-45 has a little more volume unplugged. Sustain and overall tone very, very close to the 60's era J-45. The J-45 a bit more... throaty/raspy sounding, trying to pick words to describe tone is hard, but I have video that puts together sound clips back to back comparing the sound of this Epiphone J-45 to the Gibson J-45 on my channel. P.S. I still play my Epiphone J-45 almost daily, this is my go-to acoustic on a stand in my living room. Love this guitar, except for its pickup.

Honestly, this doesn't sound that great - totally devoid of warmth and personality. Epiphone guitars have always been a huge letdown for me, especially when you consider that for the same money you could get a decent second hand, USA made, vintage Guild.... or indeed a genuine Gibson G45 or WM45. I recently bought a Freshman FA400 for under £300, which is in another league compared to this (a proper D28 killer). I also got an old Yamaha LA8 for £200. Why spend £650 on this thin sounding Epi? Makes no sense whatsoever; other than to tell the world you couldn't afford the Gibson USA J45.

Not really. The Epiphone j45 sounded really good. I could buy the Gibson but after listening to it, tho it sounds really good, it didn’t sound $3000 worth and i am not gonna buy something just because of the name on the headstock. I also happened to like the look on the epi j45 over the Gibby j45, the build quality looks better, the color, the tint, even the headstock looks better on the epi. At $750 it’s totally worth it, heck it actually should be worth more, i can see it as a $1000 guitar. So tho i could buy either one, I choose the Epiphone J45 over the Gibson, a finer instrument when you take all things into account.
