You'll have to forgive me any little inaccuracies on this one (like the envoy staves are from the Zcoin update, not anniversay I think) - it's been a few years!
lets get a 5€/month subscription for a total revamped GW1. i like the GW1 skills mechanics better than the GW2 weapon/skills mechanic. with a subscription it would be feasible.
@@975mitchell True, but the GW community hates timely fees. Most of us started playing GW instead of WoW because we don't like timely fees. So any other payment model would be preferabele.
I mean context has changed in those twenty years. I know it's very wild but you're telling me you wouldn't spend a 5$ sub to pay for a gw1 live team to return? Anet could also use the model as a testing/proving ground to shake things up for Gw3. I'm sick of my favourite franchise apparently not having the funding it needs.
@@WoodenPotatoes Perhaps, many of use were teenagers when we played GW1 for the first time with the low income that most teenagers have. The community is much older now and probably has quite some more income to spend. I think a mandatory sub fee is still out of the question but an optional sub for premium features could be an option if it is implemented right and in a way that does not just put non-subscribers on a disadvantage. Still, I rather pay for content, features and extra's than for time. But that's just me.
This is good, GW1 deserves more love, such fond memories of traveling with my first love through the Shiverpeaks back when we were such noobs one friday night it felt like we were genuine adventurers like the Fellowship of the Ring traveling through the Misty Mountains
That exactly, exploring the shiverpeaks to kryta was my first true moment I knew that I loved GW1. I was aimless in old ascolan and a guy invited me to his group. He knew the way to kryta and invited us, myself and some other random new low level guys to journey with him. He wasnt a runner and we were all somewhat low leveled and had to fight through mobs and dodge around patrols to make our way along the mountain side, occasionally stopping so our leader could swap to his guide map. The game felt so full and vast, and we had a real adventure. What a great and memorable exprience and game as a whole.
There's just something about gw1, a feeling that I can't really articulate, that still has a hold on me after all these years in a way that other games from my childhood simply don't match. Now I'm in my 30s and making adult money, I'd happily throw some of it at Anet for more content.
It is a thoroughly complete experience. From the Aesthetics, to the chosen Soundscape, to the Story, your companions/Henchmen/Heroes and the smooth gameplay, the progression and build crafting. Guilds had an awesome feel to them with their uniform Coats etc. Still remember the Guild Dances lol. Setting out in an Instance to hunt this one Elite-Boss to steal their Elite Skill etc was so much fun.
Personally, if they ever put out new content, I'd be thrilled to see 2/4 party zones. Running around with 8 characters is fine, but i loved the intimacy of the smaller groups!
@WoodenPotatoes thanks dude, glad to hear it. I may not be as active anymore on the site and the discords but I really love how far it's come and how much people still love to use it years later.
I've found many good threads on there, really. It's much better for google crawling than discords or reddit, and more visible than the wiki discussion pages. It has a lot of real value imo.
@@ryanlowe6753 ya that with improved graphics and new area with skills.. maybe an additional passive skill system for more innovation with builds would be fun too
The feel when you held the HoH multiple times… Like your guild would be famous. Even the random arenas were so much fun. Class/skill and unique build variety is just unmatched. EoE bomb, Ranger Spike, IWAY, KD/AS.. Even its minimap was the best :(
@ReadyDaddy and instead of disabling consumables, they can just disable the rez shrines and double the DP on death... And if bosses took 33% less damage from skills of their proffession(s)... you wouldn't be able to steamroll everything with a mesmer comp as much...
Hey, just felt the urge to say hi to all of you my brothers and sisters, my generation. I feel the same way you feel, I want to let you know, even thousands of miles away from each other, we will forever be close in our hearts in that feeling that we feel right now as we watch. We spoke the same language, same goals, same hours, we were a family. We are all in 30s/40s, we have families of our own now, we aren't getting our feels of GW1 times back, and we shouldn't, but we have the full right to keep those feelings and reminiscence from time to time. I will certainly keep telling stories to those who weren't so lucky. And i will keep coming back to remind you this. On this and all other vids of GW1. Potatoes, thanks for keeping the memory and relevance alive.
Despite talking about this in the remaster video, I legit didn't even consider it for this one. Hah! I think I'm just stuck on the idea of "This game can go on"
I would have a concern about this potentially opening up security issues in both gw1 and 2. Though... a remake could strip away a lot and be built from the groundup
add the "deposit mats to material storage". Also have various vendors take from the bank. Inless they already did this. I just remember finding it super jarring going back
the only thing gw1 needs is an offline mode (with 12 heroes and adding your other characters as mercenaries), so the game can still be played and preserved for future generations.
@@thebigbucktheory5488 in every mmo that has both pve and pvp sooner or later pvpers become an extremely loud minority. 90% of players played the game almost exclusively for pve. then the other 9% played a bit of both, and only around 1% were hardcore pvpers. pve outgrown pvp
The War In Kryta and Winds of change getting npcs added with quest that let you replay any quest you've already finished so that you can do the gw beyond content endlessly would be cool. It really sucks how some of the content you can never go back to unless you make a new character. I know there are quest to change the mobs, but there are things like the defense of LA and the final conflict at Shing Jea Arena you can never repeat without doing it all over again on a new character.
Personally, I want a HM mode and all it's implications to be added to pre searing only available to level 20's. Currently there's not much to do when you hit level 20 in pre-searing, sure you can do the charr boss run for the 200th time but by this point you basically 1-2 shot the bosses so it's not exactly difficult or interesting content. Add an HM mode, crank the enemies levels way up so you are forced to team up with another person to be able to beat the charr bosses. HM mode means different drop tables for enemies, which includes tomes, sure make the drop chance lower, but imagine how cool it would be to once you hit level 20 you can start making an actual build in pre searing by slowing farming out tome, how you could join a party but because you have Power Spike you can interrupt a crucial skill being used by the enemy. The charr bosses would then also have a low chance of dropping elite tomes, but as level 24's (with all the patrols of level 23's with monks nearby) it would be super difficult to even reach them let alone kill them. HM mode also means the enemies are level 20 and thus max gold weapons are now a possible drop. The golds should use the OS system so you can't extract insignia's on them which will mean there's still a huge demand for the "perfect" weapon, this would also allow for gold armor drops with stuff like +3 fire magic, or super vigor on them which would also be very valuable. If it's not too off the table add new HM daily quests like vanguard dailies to incentive people to go out and quest together in HM, again if it's not off the table you could even add something like a proto zaishen coin system where the reward gives you a trophy and if you collect 10 of them you can use it to increase your bag space or buy a bigger equipment pack. The bag space in pre is never enough I feel like. To go a step even further add in some prestige armor to pre searing but instead of rare mats it uses this HM quest currency there's unimplemented armors like on Elementalist Aziure that'd be really cool to see back in the game but if that's not an option just adding elite charr hide armor would be cool stretch goal for people to work toward. In a perfect world the HM daily quests would be quite difficult and require different sorts of 2 man party comps to beat so you can't just tome 8 of the best meta skills and never have to engage with it again or at very least require you to take along someone who could do it. I'm talking about quests like maybe one where you have to defend an NPC, or one that is time based requiring a speed boost, or one that is mostly casters so it's important to have interrupts, or a quest where the enemies have lots of damage mitigation but no healing so you need to bring condi skills, or a quest where the enemies have a crucial enchantment to strip , make quests that really play strongly to the "build craft" part of this game, sure maybe you can't beat the quest now but if you just get "1" more tome drop you can unlock a skill you think will help. It's just a shame that in pre searing you have so many worthless skills and then you hit level 20 and now it doesn't even matter because you 2 shot every enemy. Since you can't profession swap either this would mean your secondary choice is suddenly WAY MORE important in a 2 man party so you can now bring some crucial skills to completing missions. Just my thoughts on whole thing I understand your opinions on the whole tranquil aspect of pre-searing WP, but I feel like there's a lot they could do that wouldn't take too many resources for them to accomplish to make pre-searing fun and engaging to play with.
My wishlist for balance patches: Nerf's 1) Nerf mesmer untyped damage, or give it chaos damage type 2) Nerf splinter weapon so it doesn't scale so hard with channeling magic 3) Nerf UA it's simply too good of an instant choice for a monk to run Buff's 1) Buff paragon especially spear/motivation lines 2) Buff warrior, maybe make strength increase armor penetration by 1.5% or 2% rather than 1, warrior doesn't stand out vs derv or assassin very well currently. 3) Reduce the cooldown of every assassin dagger skill except the spammer trio, feel like this would give better flavor into dagger spammer builds if other skills could be more effectively spammed.
Dude this presearing stuff is a cool idea and you have opened my eyes! I agree with your nerfs, too. I would give death blossoms aoe slashing damage, too.
WP, id love for you to sit down with guys like Peter Kadar and GuildWarsReborn and have a podcast style discussion on the 20th anniversary and beyond for GW1 and continue this topic! Im actually excited to see what GW1 has to offer going forward Somehow even more so than GW2. On that point, like you stated in the video, I dont blame you for wanting to spend your hard earned cash on GW1 more than what GW2 has to offer. It isnt because it's classic, its because its proven itself to be worthwhile even beyond its time. Something that Guild Wars 2 has done, yet let us down many times more than GW1. But thats another topic altogether
I think that a new campaign is the only thing that might bring my guild back to the game. We loved GW1 largely because when we left town it was just us. It made us work as a team and appreciate each member's contributions. No random strangers running by nor other groups camping on a respawn - just us.
I agree that giving people henchman heroes too early would be a bit of a problem. but considering the game is in maintenance mode... I don't think it's that big of an issue. I agree about it just being the iconics though, there's just way too many henchman. I'd love having unlock quests for the henchman heroes, but that's probably asking way too much. Honestly, if they sold a prophecies heroes pack and a factions heroes pack, I'd buy them. That'd also take care of any complaints about mercenary heroes.
Oh that's a really good idea! Sell heroes of prophecies and heroes of factions as their own things, and have it all together in a complete collection edition that the new players will buy (on website/steam)
First and foremost, I'd LOVE new vendors for mods. It might also be interesting if they added a 'hero-only' type of skill, elite or not. Kind of like PvE skills, but for heroes. Regardless, I continue to enjoy and regularly play GW1 alongside GW2. It's so hard to believe it's been 20 years. Go GW!
I think a new Dragon sword like the Vampiric one, but with the Zealous prefix maybe, and its green or purple maybe instead of red would be cool. Also letting weapon mod items (of the same value ofc) stack would be a HUGE QoL update
Agree so much on the balance aspect. For the past 10 years the meta has been to just dump as many mesmers as possible into your team, and the fact that Ritualists have completely outclassed monk healers tells you all you need to know about the state of balance. Shaking up PvE might honestly be as easy as taking away the armor penetration from mesmer skills. Just do it. E: ah, nvm you mentioned it later
I REALLY wanna see them turn Piken Square into an outpost in Pre. I mean, it wouldn't be a huge difference, but it would make Charr farming just a little easier now that you don't need two people to open the gate. Imagine just walking out and you're immediately right in the Northlands.
how to fix PVE monk: Change Diving favor bonus to 3.5 per point invested. This makes Healing prayers much stronger to compete with Restoration magic. Smiting Prayers: using a negative modifier to the divine Favor bonus as part the entire smiting prayers line. i.e. Balthazars Aura (DF 12, SP 12): instead of 8 packets of 22 damage. It would be 8 packets of 22 damage + 8 packets of 42 damage. It brings up primary monk damage on par with other casters.
@@WoodenPotatoes You're welcome! As a massive GW1 fan (I'm online right now opening Zchest with >7k hours invested) I really do enjoy listening to your commentary. It's very well considered not least because you clearly have a very detailed knowledge of the game. I think for a die hard fan like me the most appealing updates would be the legendary hard mode, and access to discontinued collectibles. I still haven't got my hands on a collectible edition of prophecies and access to the bonus items from that would be a dream.
I'm old enough to have gamed on the commodore 64 ... GW will always hold a special place in my heart. To this day it is just still so unique. GW2 is great. But just didn't quite hold me like GW..
Hey WP, as someone who has created a successful remake/remaster of an old game (Black Mesa), the work needed to redo GW1 would be monumental (large team, multiple years). We can but dream though. Fond memories of Mehtani Keys, I was sad they didn't add those areas in the Istan map way back.
@@WoodenPotatoeshah that's awesome, maybe one day a play through XD. I developed some of Xen whilst watching your GW1 playthroughs in the background :D
I would pay for an easier difficulty mode in GW1 just so I can experience the story easily. Like nothing even needs to drop, maybe basic gear. As much as I love WPs walkthroughs it'd be nice to easily do it myself and I SUUUUUUCK at GW1.
Just start in Elona and ask for some gear in kamadan. People love giving noobs stuff that helps them. You can also make a mesmer/monk which is probably the easiest character to get through the game with
On the topic of a “Legendary” difficulty. Adding a second elite to mobs would be fun but how about limiting player skill bar to 7 or 6 skills but allowing the second elite as well. Could make for some interesting new build options while keeping things from getting over the top?
I don't want new, but I'd love some balance! How amazing would it be to have some obviously underpowered stuff or early game content that wasn't iterated on much because of Anet needing to move onto new content. As for new items and weird stuff, I'd love for it to not be completely broken and obligatory (the fast casting shield, for example). Personally, I sure hope it isn't all connected to GW2. The whole point of this is that these games are different and Anet has opportunities to embrace both alongside each other.
Did anyone think the music update to the login screen was interesting? Do you think this might be a pre-update to login screen selection? Or a failed attempt?
okok, I re-installed it. The -image took 30 mins! Changed the guild message to reply to your question. So many birthday vouchers.... You suggest a lot of good ways to add life to the game that requires little work on Arenanet's part. The weapon mod trader is the one I think is the most required. I think all my heroes use bonus items from the pre-order of eye of the north... remember the /reward thing that I would spawn them in your inventory?
Haha nice with the reinstall! It kept auto demoting but now that you've been online I think it'll stick when I next swap it. And yeah those bonus items were a godsend, my assassin still has a bunch. Edit: If you spend the vouchers on year 7 (with the new exclusives) good luck!
Food for thought. I'm highly sceptical about any future for gw1 but these are strange times in the video game industry - big studios are spending huge amounts of money on games that people are less and less impressed by and indie studios are getting more and more attention, remakes and remasters are coming out left and right, paying for gaming is becoming subscription-based instead of retail - the whole landscape of what gaming looks like has gone through so many evolutions now that it starts to feel like history is repeating itself, in more ways than one. Oh, and when it comes to Z coins, bag expansion is definitely 1# on my list of things to buy. I just like how loot and farming feels in gw1 and better inventory and bank space is a part of that. I mean I still reminisce about the hours of silly green weapon farming - it wasn't even that the stuff I was farming was that valuable, I just liked the experience of getting rare, unique drops. gw2 lacks that aspect in a severe way.
Totally! I've found the inability to skin and auto-customise all my gear (gw2 legendary style) has made the items feel very "real" to me. Not sure what that's about, but I like it.
23:55 this is definitely the idea that I would be most excited for. I almost never seek out gold weapons or particular skins because all the mods and collecting of unid items is just very frustrating. All of my characters just have Green weapons with the effects I need for my build that I just look up on the wiki. I merch all of my purple/gold drops after identifying them because I can't really keep track of what weapon mods are valuable or not. Having a weapon vendor would completely change the feel of farming and vanquishing in Guild Wars. I could actually build up a nice cash stack off of drops that I'm normally merching. Brilliant idea.
Some years ago, I went back and played some gw1 to get the heritage light armor. Such a great skin. During my brief time in gw, I got lots of help and ended up playing with someone who had mained the game since launch ahaha wild stuff. I ended up going right back to gw2 bc I figured if I was going for things might as well be in the main game. I might go for a full playthrough for lore… if not I’ll rewatch your videos while playing gw2. AND yes gw3, def needs a video of concepts, ideas, hopes and dreams. Glad be here with you.
Welcome back, good sir. Missed this type of content from you. Exciting times ahead for the franchise if the recent news is true. Glad you are doing well!
Good video, enjoyed it. Additional Realm of Gods zones was pretty much where DoA came from, with Mallyx being the God fight. Shame, as we had a number of good suggestions (back in the day) on GuildWarsGuru (later GWLegacy). However, maybe opening a new zone periodically would be a good idea (using the core professions). This would open the door to further rare mats and newer armor sets (which would require artists, so may not be feasible). I can but dream! Iron man title (or zero death GWAMM, which was fun to complete) would be the easiest to implement and would be something to crow about. Stackable mods would be a plus as well, which would save space. Finally, skill update would be dangerous (though would be interesting). We just have to cast minds back to Izzy's "pro" updates, which invariably caused more pain than fun..... I still hurt from Holy Wrath's nerf. And damn... 2005 only seems like yesterday :(
Here is my top x of things I wish they do for the 20th aniversary (also inlcuding how likely they are to occur): 1. New Skills 1a) new PVE skills (tied to factions
@@WoodenPotatoesMy hope would be that if they have people already familiar with the code all the stuff above would be a matter of weaks (?) for one or two people to add. What appears "complicated" to us players might be quite simple to add for programmers, given they know their code. It's just everything regarding balance that I think is a huge amount of work. THis comes from two sources: if they want to implement "new effects" this will be almost impossible. But as long as they stick to using mechanisms already implementet it's almost as simple as "coppy & paste" + "change the numbers". But to get everything right they need the support of the community: 1. for ideas. 2. for sorting out bad ideas 3. for playtesting that they did not suddenly break something. But I'm hopefull that this effort would be worth and could be done, if they are willing. However I also think, if we'll see more than one point implemented, they almost surely have to add something to monetize. Otherwise it makes no sense from a busines perspective. So whatever they do, is either the equivalent of at max 1 months pay for one person, or they need a way to compensate for the equivalent of about 1 years worth of payment for one person - as this would enable them to asign one to three people for a more significant amount of time. (but for that to work out, they would need around 2k players to be willing to pay at least 20$. More likely 3k players... Not sure if that is realistic...)
Would you be up to do some kind of new player guide for gw1? I've tried to get into it a few times, but I always feel a little overwhelmed by it. And searching for any information on it just seems to get me all kinds of advanced info that I can't really figure out how to properly apply as a mostly new player.
I would love for A Net to bring back the old og character selection screen, where your characters sat around a campfire and stood up, when you selected them.
I would love to see something like a draft set for your profession as you go through a dungeon where you start with maybe 4 skills (3 from your main profession and 1 from your secondary) and then as you go further through the dungeon you get the chance to add a skill to your bar maybe have there be like 6 levels to the dungeon 3 with main profession skills 1 with a secondary, the penultimate level being an elite skill choice to replace a previous skill from a selection of skills from either your primary or secondary profession and then the final level being a boss level. Make it que something like random arenas where you get matched with random players, personally I would love to see parties of 6 rather than 8 as well (if the rewards are at the very end it would make botting the area invalid). Would add a ton of replayability and they could create some cool rewards with it as well (I like the idea of adding more off profession weapon sets to the game personally like the anniversary weapons).
overcast should not be removed from the GW1 elementalist 15th anniversary elite skill. Make a build around having overcast. Edit: also +1 on the weapon upgrade vendor, I have too many upgrades in my inventory to have on the ready. Also +1 on having overcast grant armor pen (or doing something to give the ele armor pen).
Second Wind is a really fun ele elite that's all about maintaining a lot of overcast. Another good take on that concept would be cool, though I think we'd also need even more regular ele spells that benefit from overcast somehow, the selection is slightly limited currently.
Thanks WP ❤️ Community should engage in more of this kind of content which inspire public debates about GW1 There so many low hanging fruit out there which at little effort for ANet team, could result in hype, in new social medial content and in new engagement. Isn’t this what every IP holder wants in entertainment world ? It’s a pure business sense that GW1 and GW2 have remained connected over the years and are still valid for each other. It’s such a lost opportunity for ANet to keep ignoring all those “low-hanging-fruit” opportunities which would NOT cost a lot in development but would result in so much value for the community and their IP longevity ! Reworking some of the anniversary skills which no one uses OR adding new skills would be a great start. I actually went back to GW1 after many years of pause only because I was excited to capture those new anniversary skills and had tons of fun with it 3-4 years ago. All the ideas you propose here WP are great and they should be heard by ANet team ! Let’s keep this discussion ongoing in GW community ! Thank you again WP
Thanks man I'd love to read more discussion! Maybe there can be a good post on the GW legacy forums or the subreddit too. As much as I would like it to be true, I doubt YT comments have much interest of validity to the powers that be.
Wait, they're releasing a prequel to Guild Wars 2!? How will the game survive this! Okay, more seriously this is a great time to point out that anniversary releases to an otherwise very much "maintenance mode" game ought to garner LOADS of brand loyalty.
Guild Wars 1 is a really cool challenge. The builds that give you ability to solo or low man areas is great fun and so rewarding. I think the game is tough a shame it was abandoned. Considering how much content they put out with a smaller dev team and short period of time was incredible. If only they went back on their decision and started updating the game again with new content.
@@WoodenPotatoes Thanks..., Still don't recall ever seeing that, but I rarely Ctrl and look around. I suppose if any hang around, it's in Kamadan (D1) or Embark Beach?
Just casually ID's a superior vigor rune at the end there. How much are those gonna be worth now? Bonkers. Anyway some fun ideas, in particular some reason to get me back to playing GW1 seriously would be nice. In practice, I don't really know what would, but some of these things could. In particular, earning the henchmen as heroes would be fun - even if they were just skins for the current heroes. I mean, I did spend all that time before earning their primeval armor sets, so I could see it being incentive.
I'm doing a full playthrough with a friend of mine, he had never even heard about guild wars before. I made a new character with him, didn't spoil anything, didn't use a single summon stone, didn't talk about other proffesions or heroes....nothing. When we got to MOX I was kinda like "yikes...this is a spoiler for him". but he didn't know what the D (dervish) stood for; so he didn't think much of it.
Henchmen as heroes would be cool to unlock along the way. Or even as you ascend. Honestly, after ascension in Prophecies and Factions, being provided 7 heroes of your choice would be awesome. Then having the ability to unlock the rest would be cool.
I'd love to see a return for Miniatures for the 20th anniversary. Proofs of Legend can be traded for a Proof of Triumph or decade weapons for those who don't have them. Maybe the devs can incorporate a "Proof of Memory", which can be achieved through specific missions/Elite areas or PvP arena games, which could be traded for currently unavailable minis (Panda, Kanaxai, Ghosts, etc..) That way, they're not ABUNDANTLY available, still very limited, and only available during this time of year...
Just normal non-elite skills would be my favorite. No single overpowered elite skill will make Water Magic or Motivation or Deadly Arts playable, but 2-3 regular skills would. They shouldn’t count against the 3-PvE-only limit though, normal skills can’t and shouldn’t be balanced to compete against the likes of Save Yourselves.
Okay should have continued listening before commenting. Balance would be better! But I think this would be easier. Fewer skills to look at and no impact on mobs-those low-level Corsair Mesmers in Plains of Jarin are scary! Also no risk of completely obliterating somebody’s favorite build.
Your mention of utopia reminded me that age of empires 2 (a 1999 game) got an expansion just last month in feb 2024. It has actually been getting expansions since it's remaster came out, prior to that it was, like gw1, just kept alive by die hard fans. Now AoE2 has a larger playerbase than gw1, not to mention it's an old RTS, its easier to make expansions for it, but hey, who knows, maybe gw1 can benefit from a mini xpack of sorts.
Hard Mode+ feels a bit redundant and it's just a way to bypass the actual issue. Hard Mode IS hard. It's just that the Mesmers and the ST Rit are so strong that you're able to faceroll most of the HM content. Nerf some skills and I'm sure people wouldn't be clamoring for HM+ anymore. I do like the idea of a no-consumable mode though!
I wish they'd add a Piken Square or great wall in pre but the guard will only let you in if you are level 20. Once you have access you can form a 12 man party and there is a Charr dungeon.
Would love to see a remaster, Really want to see it linked to the old accounts so I dont lose anything in transition from the old game to the new one. or build the new client in a way that links the two together in a way that has cross-play capabilities... same game, same connections, just a new skin over the top.
Hey, I have not been watching your videos since last time I played GW1. I actually prefer 1 to 2 now, but I haven't played for a long time, partly because I never got the hang of it, and never actually mastered it. I've played since 2008 or 2009, and still have not finished EoN because I'm deadset on not being runned. Amyway, I wanted to say that, coming from my stupid self, having skills that ignores armor, defence and damage logic in the game is to a large degree what broke my immersion (that and the fact that I'm broke - still). So if they are doing anything, I hope they would 1) fix travel pathing, 2) rebalance according to your "ignore armor" point, and 3) increase base movement speed out of combat. I don't really care about the economy, because I don't have either the gold or the farming skills to participate, but I see your points there. Thank you for engaging me again, want to download it again and play now
I think the success of Classic Era in WoW and OSRS runescape has proven you can run multiple versions of a game at once and it doesn't take away players - it gives them more options to play the same game they love in different ways when one version is sort of finished with content for a while you switch to another.
So I’ve been playing Paragon since 2006, my favourite class in any game (maybe tied with Engineer in GW2), although it’s lacking sadly. I’ve been thinking about balance for GW1 for years now, and here is a list I came up with for Paragon. Hopefully they make sense, if you disagree or agree let me know. Before we get to the attributes let's talk about paragon mechanics Echo's that don't Echo is weird, I think every Echo should refresh on chant or shout One issue with paragon is that most of their skills work better the more paragons there are. For example skills that give adrenaline or health of shouts are strong. But if there's only 1-3 people who benefit what's the point? So I think paragons need more damage to make up for that fact. Leadership: Leadership needs a buff. Just plus 2 energy isn't enough to make being a paragon useful enough. Compare it to Mesmer which gets a faster cast time and rechange time. It makes the mesmer long casting time much more worth it. I think they should add that while under the effect of a shout or chant, the paragon gets 1% armour pen for each level of leadership. Something like that would give more damage to paragons. Also it works with the lore, leading their party gives them more strength. I also think leadership could have a skill that gives AoE to all paragons spear skills to Adjacent foes. "Make Your Time!" - The cooldown is way too long, 30 seconds for 1-6 adrenaline doesn't do much, I think the cooldown should be decreased to 20 at least. Angelic Bond - I think it's good, although the cooldown is a bit long, maybe 20 or 25. Also perhaps when it ends on one ally, the rest get healed by 1/4 of the amount. Angelic Protection - It's like Spirit bond but slightly more difficult to use, as the cooldown is so great. If it was down to 15 or maybe even 20 that'd be great. Anthem of Fury - It's okay but only if you had a team of warriors, paragons and dervs. But that's not realistic, in fact most of the issues with paragons are that they are better with more paragons involved, but because they lack damage no one will do that. So with that said I think it should also add armour pen for the next attack to 20%. That will make it feel more like an elite. Or if not that maybe It lasts for the next 2 attacks or 3. Burning Refrain - With Blazing Finale being so powerful this will never see play. Perhaps it should also increase damage to people with burning. 1% per leadership or 0.5% Burning Shield - Maybe block the next 1...5 attacks, one for every 5 points in leadership. Defensive Anthem - Why is it only active until you use the attack skill when Aegis for monk doesn't and it's not an elite? I think the end on hit should be removed. Yes it only takes 1 second rather than 2 but it's an elite, and should be strong. Enduring Harmony - As said before, echos should echo, then this should be pretty great depending if duration mattered for the shout/chant. Glowing Signet - A weird signet given the energy leadership gives. Maybe it should give adrenaline as well. or health. Hasty Refrain - Not bad, but fallback/incoming is better. Gets some healing, which isn't too much but it's something, and it's 33%. The only thing this thing has going for it, is it echos. But the length it lasts is a bit short, maybe increase it by 20-40%. Natural Temper - Enchantments are everywhere in the game, basically locking you from using this while playing with monks, and necro supports. Soldier's Fury - It should echo, also remove the -20 armour. Motivation Next Motivation, the one which needs the most help. I think the chant cast time should be half a second, something that could be done across the board but motivation needs it. "It's Just a Flesh Wound." - Restore Condition gives you health which I think is much more worth than 25% movement speed. I think it should also give immunity to cripple, while the buff lasts. "The Power Is Yours!" - It scales strangely, at 8 it only starts to works, and at even 21 you still only get 1. I think it should also do something else or just change how it works in general. give 1 plus energy per 5 motivation, or 6. Or possibly give health regen also. Energizing Finale and Finale of Restoration - echo that doesn't echo. Could decrease the amount of healing for finale of restoration to balance it. Inspirational Speech - Losing adrenaline seems a bit harsh. Leader's Zeal - Nearby ally is weird... Should be earshot. It's not an amazing skill given leadership but I suppose not everything needs to be. perhaps instead of a skill, could be a signet similar to Signet of Synergy, but gives energy instead. Mending Refrain - Why start at 2 and end on 3 regen? It scales strangely. Start at 1 and every 5 levels go up one. Signet of Synergy - needs half the recharge and half the cast time. Song of Power - Maybe add +10 regen as well. Make it a skill that helps recharge fast between short fights. Song of Purification - Should take 1 second to cast Song of Restoration - I think it's great, maybe reduce the recharge to 15 though. Spear Mastery The main issue with Paragon is they don't do much damage and they don't heal as well as monks or rts. If we can get a good balance on damage, I think people will be more willing to take them. They don't have AoE which is another problem. A non elite skill that did some AoE similar to Holy Spear would be great. Nothing too high, possibly 6 adrenaline, cooldown of 3, attack values half of wild throw. Or Instead make it high energy of 20, at wild throws values with a cooldown of 6. This way you get high Damage from it, but it will impact how you manage your shouts for energy. Blazing Spear - Too much adrenaline, given that burning isn't difficult to do for paragon. Maybe bring it down to 4. Cruel Spear - It's a good effect and strong. I think it should also hit Adjacent foes Disrupting Throw - Bring it down to 5 second cooldown. If that's too low, maybe 6 Harrier's Toss - Cooldown could be 5 Mighty Throw - I think it should take more adrenaline, but cast faster. Possibly 4 or 5 adrenaline, but 1.5 cast time. Spear of Lightning - It's an amazing skill, so keep it the same. I'm just wondering why it's lightning, I wonder if they could add one for each element, and give an effect. For fire blazing spear is pretty similar so maybe replace it with that. Water does a 50% slowdown or something, and earth does bleeding. Similar to how Ele and their base elemental spells work (Flare and so on). Stunning Strike - Maybe similar to Cruel Spear and hit AoE Adjacent. Swift Javelin - Reduce it to 5 seconds. Unblockable Throw - Way too long of a cast time, bring it down to 1 second, given it takes 7 adrenaline, or maybe 1.5 seconds at least. Command I think it's in a good place for the most part, but the elites are really lacking. "Help Me!" - Give the user some armour, maybe 1 for each point in Command. "Never Give Up!" and "Never Surrender!" are decent, only working while people are below 75% makes it only work on some members rather than the whole is most situations. I think the buff should appear, but the effect doesn't apply until they go under 75% for "Never Surrender!". As for "Never Give Up!", it could make it give energy regen instead. Or perhaps it only works when the ally is below 75% energy rather than health. "Incoming!" - I really like it, but the only difference from fallback is you can attack and still have it, and it also costs less energy. I'm not sure that effect is powerful enough to bring it over other elites. Maybe increasing the healing by 50%, or some armour. "Go for the Eyes!" - Great skill, although going over 100% doesn't do anything. Perhaps starting when you go over 100%, it increases critical damage by 5% per level. It starts going over 100% at level 16, so 16 would give 100% crit chance and 5% crit damage. and so on till 21 giving 30% crit damage. "Make Haste!" - Kinda weird, but not sure if it needs a change, probably good for some gimmicky situations. Perhaps give armour to the user as well, 1 for a point in Command. Anthem of Guidance - I think it should also increase damage of their next attack skills in a similar way to Anthem of Envy Crippling Anthem - Maybe it should also do bleeding, and attacks against crippled foes increases the damage similar to Anthem of Envy
Yeah if u look at GW1 , all it needs , is a New Updated HD models for the playable characters. Even then that should only be a option .
How the hell are we already in our 30s?
Man smh. I was still in high school at my peak time of playing this
For real!
In my head I'm still in first year of university. :(
But our generation will be very different from our parent's I think
I know right.... 37 here. Was 18 when I started playing GW. Haven't stopped since. How did so many years fly by.
Yeah I hate it
This is good, GW1 deserves more love, such fond memories of traveling with my first love through the Shiverpeaks back when we were such noobs one friday night it felt like we were genuine adventurers like the Fellowship of the Ring traveling through the Misty Mountains
What a great and memorable exprience and game as a whole.
alliance battles were the sh*t. kurzick #1. plus random arena was so good.
Inject videos of WoodenPotatoes talking about GW1 for an hour directly into my bloodstream. I'm addicted to this.
There's just something about gw1, a feeling that I can't really articulate, that still has a hold on me after all these years in a way that other games from my childhood simply don't match. Now I'm in my 30s and making adult money, I'd happily throw some of it at Anet for more content.
I've always felt Guild Wars was a different cut from the rest of mmorpgs. It always felt more of a coop game to me than anything. Love it to this day.
A fun challenge and a fun way to work as a team.
As a co-founder of Legacy, thanks for the shout out 💙
Dude it's great stuff!
It has a lot of real value imo.
guild wars 3 is gonna be a guild wars 1 remake with jumping
It shouldn't take too many months to assign a /jump emote macro to the spacebar!
That's literally all I wanted from GW2
We can dream
better than a guild wars 2 remake 😂
@@ryanlowe6753 ya that with improved graphics and new area with skills.. maybe an additional passive skill system for more innovation with builds would be fun too
Greatest pvp game of all time. Nothing ever came slightly close :(
I loved GvG so much. Wish they'd put it into GW2. 10vs10 would totally change up ranked PvP.
Alliance battles and HoH were also absolutely amazing
The feel when you held the HoH multiple times… Like your guild would be famous. Even the random arenas were so much fun. Class/skill and unique build variety is just unmatched. EoE bomb, Ranger Spike, IWAY, KD/AS.. Even its minimap was the best :(
@@butregenyo_yavrusu the IWAY era was the golden time of GW 😍
GW1 has given me so many memories. I absolutely loved playing this game and loved coming back to it.

Community gets slapped by a Level 40 gargoyle outside Ascalon
I would pay for this.
@@WoodenPotatoes oh, absolutely
This is actually a marvelous idea, because the remainder of community would once again run 8man teams in PvE
If life was fair we'd have games just like GW1 but better and leaving the past behind. Instead we are longing for what made it special.
Offline Mode, and allow the modding community keep the game alive forever!
Despite talking about this in the remaster video, I legit didn't even consider it for this one. Hah! I think I'm just stuck on the idea of "This game can go on"
offline mode has been recently declined by gw1s makers
I would have a concern about this potentially opening up security issues in both gw1 and 2. Though... a remake could strip away a lot and be built from the groundup
this actually amazing idea. for once someone is talking sense instead of demanding pointless shyt like remasters or remakes.
if they come out with an offline mode i can die a happy man
GW 3 should bring unique systems of GW 1 rather than become missmatch of other mmorpgs and fail miserably.
add the "deposit mats to material storage". Also have various vendors take from the bank. Inless they already did this. I just remember finding it super jarring going back
the only thing gw1 needs is an offline mode (with 12 heroes and adding your other characters as mercenaries), so the game can still be played and preserved for future generations.
I'm amazed nobody has made private GW1 servers and clients yet IMO
Nah we can already do this. We need things we cant do.
What about pvp though
@@thebigbucktheory5488 in every mmo that has both pve and pvp sooner or later pvpers become an extremely loud minority. 90% of players played the game almost exclusively for pve. then the other 9% played a bit of both, and only around 1% were hardcore pvpers. pve outgrown pvp
@@velDANTe I agree but guild wars sort of addressed it with pve/pvp skills speration but that's just what I like.
Would like to see an auction house, all remaining mini pets and discontinued items reintroduced into the game as well as numerous QoL updates
Loving the GW1 content! (music is quite loud though)
I can drop it a few dbs going forward, i've been slowly raising it till i get a message about it, and you're the first!
@@WoodenPotatoes It's quite loud. It's actually hard for me to hear what you are saying sometimes. Still great content!
It's a tough balancing act because the OST is just so damn good haha@@WoodenPotatoes
I was thinking the same thing but its hard to complain when it's Jeremy Soule lol
I want a proper sequel with the systems from 1.
and? you will never get it! because you are powerless. and poor. nobody cares, bro. gw1 is long gone. forget about it
jealous of the alternative reality that got that gw2
My wishlist for balance patches:
Nerf's
1) Nerf mesmer untyped damage, or give it chaos damage type
2) Nerf splinter weapon so it doesn't scale so hard with channeling magic
3) Nerf UA it's simply too good of an instant choice for a monk to run
Buff's
1) Buff paragon especially spear/motivation lines
2) Buff warrior, maybe make strength increase armor penetration by 1.5% or 2% rather than 1, warrior doesn't stand out vs derv or assassin very well currently.
Only thing I need: guarantee that servers stay online for as long as GW2/GW3 are supported
they already said that servers will be up indefinitely. Multiple times.
WP, id love for you to sit down with guys like Peter Kadar and GuildWarsReborn and have a podcast style discussion on the 20th anniversary and beyond for GW1 and continue this topic! Im actually excited to see what GW1 has to offer going forward
Somehow even more so than GW2.
Sell heroes of prophecies and heroes of factions as their own things, and have it all together in a complete collection edition that the new players will buy (on website/steam)
wayfarer's reverie is already 10 years old?!
20th sounds like something you should give some special attention. But I doubt we well get anything.
I think it's fair to expect something given both the 10th and 15th had special attention.
Imagine they invent a time machine and bring old arenanet back to release a proper GW1 sequel.
Might be as realistic as the other suggestions.
I dare to hope so
My life would be complete if they model GW3 after GW1, and we can all experience HoH and GvG fresh again
They could add in an update to be able to "buy back" from merchants. Helps with accidental sell. Would be a nice feature to have.
I REALLY wanna see them turn Piken Square into an outpost in Pre. I mean, it wouldn't be a huge difference, but it would make Charr farming just a little easier now that you don't need two people to open the gate. Imagine just walking out and you're immediately right in the Northlands.
man, the music on your narrative is spot on. Some old Prophecies tunes ❤ I'm turning very melancholic
how to fix PVE monk:
Change Diving favor bonus to 3.5 per point invested.
Brilliant. Simple, effective.
If GW1 gets a faithful remaster, I’d probably revisit it again (fingers crossed it would be playable on Mac tho)

@@WoodenPotatoes You're welcome! As a massive GW1 fan (I'm online right now opening Zchest with >7k hours invested) I really do enjoy listening to your commentary. It's very well considered not least because you clearly have a very detailed knowledge of the game.

Beautiful video. GW1 is an absolute gem.
Love the idea regarding an armor update/rework!! Eles, Monks, and to some extent, warriors and paragons, need some love
okok, I re-installed it.
Edit:
If you spend the vouchers on year 7 (with the new exclusives) good luck!
+100% 👍
Glad you are doing well!
i hope duplicate mhenlo's are called Headmaster Monk
Only game I would come back to play games again..
And damn... 2005 only seems like yesterday :(
damn you made me install it again..... :D owwww the good times ive had in this game.Pre searing player here ...i feeeeeel old.
Here is my top x of things I wish they do for the 20th aniversary (also inlcuding how likely they are to occur):
1. New Skills
1a) new PVE skills (tied to factions
Nice! glad you like the tying skills to factions idea as well! I also wonder how many devs they would need to pull this stuff off.
The real question is why Anet haven't hired you yet WP to be a Guild Wars consultant???your ideas are radical, i love it!!!!
NO WAY the 15th anniversary was almost 5 years ago! 🤯
Yeah that log in was insanely cool!
Would love to see the servers busy again. It is a great game with so much to offer. Used to be a droks runner, sorry guys 😂
overcast should not be removed from the GW1 elementalist 15th anniversary elite skill.
Thanks WP ❤️
Community should engage in more of this kind of content which inspire public debates about GW1
There so many low hanging fruit out there which at little effort for ANet team, could result in hype, in new social medial content and in new engagement.
What's the best way to get into Guild Wars 1 now? Has anyone made guides for the games that cover all the anniversary updates?
Every 10-15 years a new Guild Wars with some achievements carryover through the hall of monuments sounds good to me.
Im ready for guild wars 3.
Awesome video. I hope the developers will consider these great suggestions.
The esthetic of GW1 was sooo much better than GW2
Wait, they're releasing a prequel to Guild Wars 2!? How will the game survive this!
Okay, more seriously this is a great time to point out that anniversary releases to an otherwise very much "maintenance mode" game ought to garner LOADS of brand loyalty.
Thanks for your video, Imo they should add inscription like +10 creatures or shields, like they do with +10 charr armor shields in eotn
I'd like that as well, all the weird mods and things.
Since lats week I have been continuing my GW1 journey, and it is actually soo nice as a GW2 player, to experience the past of Tyria
You may find interesting the GW Apr 22, 2024 update noted on the Wiki. Have any ideas what this may mean?
Damn! Very interesting!
@@WoodenPotatoes As far I know, I've never seen any ANet people in game. Do they look different? Some way to spot?
Yeah they have a red tag next to their usernames
@@WoodenPotatoes Thanks..., Still don't recall ever seeing that, but I rarely Ctrl and look around. I suppose if any hang around, it's in Kamadan (D1) or Embark Beach?
Thank you for the blessed guild wars 1 content!
Ok I guess I’m gonna come back to relive my childhood
Just casually ID's a superior vigor rune at the end there. How much are those gonna be worth now? Bonkers.
Anyway some fun ideas, in particular some reason to get me back to playing GW1 seriously would be nice. In practice, I don't really know what would, but some of these things could. In particular, earning the henchmen as heroes would be fun - even if they were just skins for the current heroes. I mean, I did spend all that time before earning their primeval armor sets, so I could see it being incentive.
I really loved getting armour for the heroes, but eh... it's art so maybe a non starter.
A consumables seller (for pcons) would be great and add a plat/ecto sink.
Yeah MOX is a rough/weird bit unlocking randomly there like that.
Maybe the devs can incorporate a "Proof of Memory", which can be achieved through specific missions/Elite areas or PvP arena games, which could be traded for currently unavailable minis (Panda, Kanaxai, Ghosts, etc..)
That way, they're not ABUNDANTLY available, still very limited, and only available during this time of year...
Officially starting this game again Friday! Arenanet, listen to this guy!!!
Does anyone know if wp speeds up his audio? Sometimes it's really hard to follow as a non native speaker and i have to slow it down :D
Just music volume I think in this one, usually no there is zero speed up.
Man I got to go back and play through The game again.
exactly the same feeling !
Just logged back in, mannnn! The nostalgia. There is still 4 Districts in Kamadan though!!
And embark beach, gtob, pre searing all have lots too!
I just started playing gw1 recently (after years of playing gw2) and that lack of inventory space is very frustrating.
Guild Wars 1, will be forever in my heart ❤
Thank you for engaging me again, want to download it again and play now
Oh travel pathing is another good one! It's a bit of a mess for sure.
Are there still active guilds in gw1?
Yes
I think the success of Classic Era in WoW and OSRS runescape has proven you can run multiple versions of a game at once and it doesn't take away players - it gives them more options to play the same game they love in different ways when one version is sort of finished with content for a while you switch to another.
*20th anniversary update drops*
ANET: "We've brought OG Shadow Form back..."
The community: "Hell yeah!!... ohhh wait, the afflicted tho..."
Before we get to the attributes let's talk about paragon mechanics
Echo's that don't Echo is weird, I think every Echo should refresh on chant or shout
One issue with paragon is that most of their skills work better the more paragons there are. For example skills that give adrenaline or health of shouts are strong. But if there's only 1-3 people who benefit what's the point? So I think paragons need more damage to make up for that fact.
Leadership:
Leadership needs a buff.
1% per leadership or 0.5%
Burning Shield - Maybe block the next 1...5 attacks, one for every 5 points in leadership.
Motivation
Next Motivation, the one which needs the most help.
Song of Purification - Should take 1 second to cast
Song of Restoration - I think it's great, maybe reduce the recharge to 15 though.
Spear Mastery
The main issue with Paragon is they don't do much damage and they don't heal as well as monks or rts.
I think it should also hit Adjacent foes
Disrupting Throw - Bring it down to 5 second cooldown. If that's too low, maybe 6
Harrier's Toss - Cooldown could be 5
Mighty Throw - I think it should take more adrenaline, but cast faster.
Command
I think it's in a good place for the most part, but the elites are really lacking.
Anthem of Guidance - I think it should also increase damage of their next attack skills in a similar way to Anthem of Envy
Crippling Anthem - Maybe it should also do bleeding, and attacks against crippled foes increases the damage similar to Anthem of Envy
Damn what a wall of text! Love it!
