    Just stumbled on this video and overview. I received this exact same jointer from my dad who passed a few years back. I'm going through a restoration this summer... disassembly, cleaning and re-paint. Thank you for posting this.

    Nice find! And the repairs/upgrades you made to it are great. My shopsmith jointer attachment has the same dual fence adjustment and I also think that feature is great. Thanks for sharing!

      Thanks Mac! Funny you mention the shopsmith. I was just speaking to a friend a few days ago that might be picking one up with many attachments. Interesting the jointer has the same dual adjustments. This type of system has tons of versatility. Thanks for the info, G.

    I LOVE it! I bought almost the exact same jointer from a guy in town for 50 bucks with what looks like a similar motor. No stand though. I had the same issue with the motor. Mine has a double shaft and I could just switched sides, but I'm building a rolling cart with my planer, belt sander, disc sander and my jointer all on it so the motor for my jointer ended up being flipped around the opposite way to keep it tucked under the stand to make room for dust collection under the jointer so it worked out for me. I did speed up the rpm a little on the cutter head. It worked OK, but for some reason, that particular vibration hurts my hands. I think I'm running 5500 rpm or so and it seems smoother to me and the sound of the cutting is less.... percussive? I haven't had any issues with anything heating up so I'll probably keep it this way.
    BTW You aren't kidding about the strange 9/16 shaft. I bought a pully assuming it was half inch. I ended up just boring it out to 9/16. It thinned the wall of the bore a little bit but nothing crazy and it's not a super high torque machine so it should be fine.... *famous last words*

    • @ghostses
      @ghostses  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great price Lloyd! Try running a link belt. They can take a lot of vibration out of belt driven machinery. If you do try one- be aware they are directional. If ran incorrectly- they can actually increase vibration. I run them on almost all of my machine tools and will run nothing else.
      Yeah, a very strange bore size for sure. Why they didn't go with a standard size is beyond me. They probably could've used an off the shelf unit rather than having to produce an odd-ball. I imagine there was a reason- but I can't see it. Good luck with yours, G.

      Larry, I believe I got it off eBay, but it's been years ago. Here's a link to one on Amazon. I didn't price shop and don't recall if 4' is long enough if your setup is just like mine. I ended up getting new pulleys for the jointer I’m fixing because the unbalanced pulleys caused so much vibration, it’s definitely something to watch for when getting a used Delta Rockwell jointer.

    You have perfect timing. I picked up a 1938 6" delta 36-207 several months ago. I replaced the bearings then but haven't got back to finish it up. Need to replace the head pulley (it crumbled to pieces when I removed it), sharpen the knives and reinstall he head. I planned to do it this weekend and then saw your videos.
    I'm going to use the rust remover you suggest and sharpen and set the knives using the methods you demonstrated.
    Couple questions. You mentioned you had a new set of knives - where did you find them? How did you determine head rpm with varying size pulleys. I pick up a replacement for the head pulley, but it isn't an exact match.
    Thanks for the videos -

    • @ghostses
      @ghostses  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very cool John. Sounds like your project is going about like mine- but mine took about 5yrs...lol.
      My head pulley has an odd 9/16 bore so check yours. 9/16 is extremely odd and trying to find a pulley might be difficult if yours is the same size. Ebay may be your only option, or using a bore reducer if one can be found.
      The Rust Free product I highly recommend. Let me know how it works for you.
      The new set of knives came with my jointer when I purchased it. I bet you could find a new set on Amazon, or even Ebay.
      If you can find a copy of the manual for your machine, it should state what RPM the cutter head should be running at. I would guess 42-4500 rpm- but confirm if you can.
      From there, visit this website and play around with the pulley diameters to achieve the proper configuration. Some tips on the calculator.
      The pulley center is not required unless you need to find a belt length.
      Tick RPM Large since this is the motor pulley.
      Enter 1725 if that's the RPM of your motor
      Play with the pulley sizes to get the rpm you're looking for.
      Click calculate between each change to update the results.

      Hope this helps and let me know how things turn out! Good luck, G.

    Hello Sir.
    I just found your channel. I just picked up the same joiner for $35 and everything works, but when I power it on the cutting blade runs backwards to how it should cut. It has cloth wiring coming out of the beast of a motor. Not sure how to rewire it to work properly. Like you said, trying to reverse the wires resulted in a lot of sparks... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

    • @ghostses
      @ghostses  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Larry, if it's mounted on a bench, you can turn the motor 180 degrees to make the cutter head spin in the proper direction. As for re-wiring the motor so it turns in the other direction, you will need to dig to see if it's possible for your motor. Take care, G.

    • @LarryLeesBees
      @LarryLeesBees 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ghostses - Thank you. Appreciate the tips. I had thought about turning the motor 180°, which is doable, I’ll just have to add support to the motor as turning it will leave it off the frame.

    Another great score, G. Nice old machine...especially the fence. Like your idea for the Gibs! Cheap pulleys are always a pain and never straight. I have a piece of 1"Al plate that I use to straighten them. If you lay them on the plate and use a little dead blow or rubber mallet with light taps you can bring them in better...but not perfect. Sometimes I pinch an old belt in them to keep from tweaking the channel. Like you said...Old pulleys are the best if not trashed. Think you need to get a bigger shop, Bud! LoL

    • @ghostses
      @ghostses  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed! The fence is very cool. The gib thumbscrews will be a good upgrade. I'm not sure why they didn't do this in the beginning as it seems natural to me- but may have had something to do with a bean counter. I'm not sure if a new jointer would have locking gibs/tables or not- I've never really looked at them. Good tips on straightening out wonky pulleys. As yes, I REALLY need a bigger shop. I have the goods to do most things, but lack the space to do anything easily. I manage, but it's getting tougher as I drag in new things. Take care, G.

    • @ghostses
      @ghostses  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem James! If you have an original motor with the built in switch that connects to a rod- the only place I can think of to get one would be Ebay. Does your motor hum- but not start? If so, take off the belt, get it spinning by hand- then turn on the switch. If it starts running, you probably just need to change the starting capacitor on the motor. It's under the rounded cover on top. If it let out the smoke, it's probably shot. G.

    I am restoring a Delta Homecraft 4" jointer looks just like yours. I am putting on a 1hp 3450 rpm motor but don't know what size pulley to put on the motor. The jointer has the 2 3/4x 5/8 bore which looks like the origional one. Also need a manual. Where do I get one? Thanks Dave

    • @ghostses
      @ghostses  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Calson Dave, I believe they call for a motor running 1725RPM. The original pulley configuration should be 2 3/4" up top like you have, and a 6.5" on the motor (probably hard to come by)- which should yield around 4076RPM on the cutter pulley. If you're planning on running a 3450RPM motor and leave the 2 3/4 pulley on the cutter head; and if you ran a 3" pulley on the motor- you would get about 3760RPM at the cutter head pulley which might work out just fine.
      Here's a link to an online calculator where you can play with different arrangements to get what you need. I believe the target RPM at the cutter should be right around 4K RPM.

      As for the manual, you can find a pdf file at the following link.

    I'm surprised with all the Harbor Freight reviews, that you didn't use one of their green ACCU-LINK belts. I'm currently in the process of restroring a Craftsman 4 3/8" jointer. Wish it had an adjustable out feed and that fence.

    • @ghostses
      @ghostses  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know what Hank, I totally forgot they sold the ACCU-LINK belts. I know why I haven't used one of theirs yet, but could have on this project. The first Fenner I bought for my table saw was in a kit from Woodcraft. It came with machined pulleys to replace the ones on my saw. At that time I wasn't really buying anything from HF. Putting one on my table saw is when I fell in love with them. Then I bought some Fenner's for one of my lathes and drill press. These were 3/8 wide so the HF belt wouldn't work. When I did my milling machine, they were 5/8 wide so HF was out there as well. This is the first 1/2 belt where I could have used one, but simply forgot they sold them. They seem to get rave reviews and come with 5' as apposed to the 4' from Woodcraft. Using a 25% off coupon, the HF belt could be had for 18.74 plus tax- not too bad! The fence and table are nice on this machine. Good luck with your restoration! If you go with the HF belt on it, please report back on what you think. Sorry so long and good luck, G.

I don't have a manual. Upon further investigation, I found the manual and it calls for either a 1/3 or 1/2 HP motor and the motor on this one is only 1/4 HP, so I'm guessing I'll have to find another if it's underpowered. you say it should be in the 4000 RPM range? this motor only says 1750.

Search around vintagemachinery.org/ for a manual. Oh, I see now you found a manual but that site is great for vintage machines. The motor should be a 1725-1750 rpm motor. The pulley's installed will bring the cutter head RPM to around 4k. I can't remember the exact pulley arrangement they called for- but may have mentioned it in the video. It should have a parts breakdown to give you some insight on what it takes to get them off. Good luck, G.

      Thanks John, I was jumping up and down at the time I got it. It's sad I've had it for so many years and am just getting it ready for use...lol. I'm years behind on my projects. All said and done, I think I have about $140 in it with the link belt, pulley, and wiring. Not too shabby if I say so myself. Take care, G.

      Robert Bezrutczyk I sure can Robert. These are the exact bearings I purchased and from the same seller. Providing you have the same jointer, these should work. hi every one, a couple of months ago got a Rockwell jointer model 37-200 runs beautifully, have a question for all you guys, does anyone knows how to dismount the front and back tables?? i will be shipping these overseas with other equipment I got , any comments, will appreciate all, yes I have the parts list and the user manual, previously I have take a part different wood working tools, I start on this one loosen the screws that holds the GIB to adjust the table, it work only to a point, cause then I found a big under the table nut that stops the part to slide out.thanks for your kind support Oscar

    • @ghostses
      @ghostses  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oscar, hopefully someone will chime in with a definite answer. I'm not familiar with your model, but did have issues getting my tables off as well. They were hitting on the lead screw nuts as well. If my memory serves me correctly, I had to loosen the gib screws all the way then slide out the gibs. That gave me just enough space to wiggle things apart. Sorry I can't be of a greater help, but hope this helps in some way. Good luck, G.

    Your RPM's are a little higher than rated, at 4400-4500 rather than 4200, but it seems that it may run better being too fast than too slow.

    • @ghostses
      @ghostses  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Possibly so, I can't say for sure. But yes, it does work great for whatever the actual RPM is. Good luck, G.
