  • "Lord, hard is the fortune of all womankind.
    They're always controlled, they're always confined;
    Controlled by their parents until they are wives,
    Then slaves to their husbands for the rest of their lives.
    I been a poor girl, my fortune is sad.
    I've always been courted by the wagoner's lad.
    He courted me daily, by night and by day;
    And now he is loaded and going away.
    Your parents don't like me because I am poor;
    They say I'm not worthy of entering your door.
    I work for my living, my money's my own,
    And if they don't like me, they can leave me alone.
    Your horses are hungry, go feed them some hay.
    Come sit down here by me as long as you stay.
    My horses ain't hungry, they won't eat your hay;
    So fare you well, darling, I'll be on the way.
    Your wagon needs greasing, your whip is to mend.
    Come sit down here by me as long as you can.
    My wagon is greasy, my whip's in my hand;
    So fare you well, darling, no longer to stand"

    I almost bought the Goodtime with the Gumby headstock, but then I heard the next model after with the fiddle shaped head had a better pot. It's nice to see good players using affordable instruments. Meredith Moon has a Goodtime too.

      This is an old folk ballad, probably from between the 1850s-1880s. It seems to be of American origin.

      Just FYI the first verse of this song is from a poem written in Scotland in the early 1700's, performed in a play called the The Ladies' Case in 1722. It had three more verses that are very different from this version. It was first recorded in the 1920's with three newer verses, and came to be called the Wagoner's Lad. The great Scottish guitarist Bert Jansch wrote an acoustic guitar accompaniment to the song quite different from the claw hammer banjo used by Strings here, and recorded the song as an instrumental on his Jack Orion album. This accompaniment was electrified and sped up by Jimmy Page and recorded as "Bron Yr Aur" on the Led Zeppelin III album.

      @@robertwagoner5122
      Actually, it was written by English poet and dramatist Henry Carey in about 1728 - it was titled 'The Ladies Case'.

    • @robertwagoner5122
      @robertwagoner5122 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Wotsitorlabart Actually, while Carey is credited with writing two verses of the poem, his verses were a rewritten version of a poem called To the ladies, written by Lady Mary Chudleigh, contained in a book called Poems on Several Occasions, published in 1703. (Strings sings only the first verse) The Wagoner's lad verses are not contained in the traditional poem and were added later by uncredited authors.
