Anyone can nitpick stats like you just did, you had the luxury of Slow motion video, looked at it under a microscope….. the statistician probably had court seat view in real time…Jordan was all over that court, offensively and defensively! Jordan should’ve been back to back DPOY, along with his scoring, that’s mind blowing!!! AOH did a video of the same thing you did, with LeDiddy, and his stats were sooooo egregious, that they were giving him stats he wasn’t even in the frame, he was getting flat footed rebounds, while his teammates blocked everyone out so he can grab them, steals practically fell in his hands because the refs didn’t call the fouls on his teammates, they gave him blocks that were considered steals by his teammates, it’s so bad but I guess you won’t look at those numbers…. I Know what you’re going to say, “Us Jordan Simps” are reaching? We may be but you got to research LeDiddys stat padding numbers too?

Great compilation, Jonny! I really like the brand new video about MJ's greatness. You're right that he focused on winning and that is - and I totally agree with you - much more important than any statistic. He was ultracompetitive and he pushed his teammates very hard. And, he used anything from an MVP snub to something much more small scale and arguably petty (like George Karl not saying hi to him and making up a story of a player praising him after a loss) as an extra motivation to play at his very best. To me, he is the GOAT and his focus was integral to his success.
I also really like what you said about critical thinking when it comes to remarks by former (and current) NBA stars - as well as media figures - about the game. Your advice not only applies to basketball, but also to life in general. It's an important skill and definitely one to apply throughout one's life, particularly every person has their own bias and their own perspectives. It definitely helps with learning about the game and its history too.
Great job in summarizing the difficulties behind the scenes between MJ, other Bulls players, Phil Jackson, and Bulls management. I've read about it over the years and I agree that to cover it in great detail would require an extensive video. You did a great job in concisely discussing it and covering the most important points.
I need to check out the other videos too. I remember watching each of them before and they're cool.
Nice compilation again. Have a great rest of the week :). Take care, Jonny!

    NBA TOP 30 ALL TIME:
    1. Michael Jordan - the greatest player and the greatest career in NBA history. Most dominant offensive force and one of the games best defenders.
    6x Champ 6x FMVP 5x MVP
    2. Bill Russell - the greatest winner and greatest defensive force in NBA and sports history. A legend on/off court. The key to NBA first dynasty.
    11x Champ 5x FMVP 5x MVP
    3. Magic Johnson - the great PG ever (so far…). REVOLUTIONIZED his position and saved the NBA.
    5x Champ 3x FMVP 3xMVP
    4. LeBron James - the greatest longevity in sports history. One of the most dominant forces ever and top5 all round player. Still.. counting.
    4x Champ 4x FMVP 4x MVP
    5. Tim Duncan - best PF ever. One of the most fundamentally sound players ever. Played both ends at the highest level for 15 seasons.
    5x Champ 3x FMVP 2x MVP
    6. Kareem Abdul Jabar - owner of the most dominant go-to move on offense. The HOOK. The previous scoring leader and lead all points for 4 decades. The greatest BASKETBALL career ever.
    Prep to Pro.
    6x Champ 2x FMVP 6x MVP
    7. Kobe Bryant - see number 1 and dilute the athleticism and physical intangibles and that’s what you got.
Arguably the greatest warrior in NBA history.
    5x Champ 2x FMVP 1x MVP
    8. Shaquille O’Neal - the most dominant ever. The immovable object/unstoppable force. Shaq was the definition of dominance.
    4x Champ 3x FMVP 1x MVP
    9. Larry Bird - maybe the most legendary on the list. Precursor to Jokic but better. One of the most skilled & clutch players ever.
    In any sport.
    3x Champ 2x FMVP 3x MVP
    10. Hakeem Olajuwon - back to back.
The best of the mid90’s and second best player in the era. Hakeem is like Russell but with AllNBA offensive ability.
    2x Champ 2x FMVP 1x MVP
    11. Wilt Chamberlain - the games most prolific scorers. Arguably it’s greatest defender as well. The man could do it all. Even lead the league in assist at 7”2. Wilt IS unparalleled.
    GOAT athlete.
    2x Champ 2x FMVP 3x MVP
    12. Steph Curry - the games most prolific shooter and one of its greatest scorers. REVOLUTIONIZED the game forever. STILL GOING.
    4x Champ 1x FMVP 2x MVP
    13. Isaiah Thomas - ZEKE. CP3 before CP3 but nastier and meaner. A warrior and one of the games greatest strategist and generals. Quietly a top5 passer.
    2x Champ 2x FMVP
    14. Oscar Robertson - the greatest all around basketball player ever. Could do everything at a AllNBA level.
Changed the way players were interpreted and influenced generations.
    1x Champ 2x MVP
    15. Kevin Durant - the Slim Reaper is likely the most ideal offensive weapon ever. Can hit from anywhere, anytime over anyone. Hard to beat and impossible to match that level of offensive dominance.
    2x Champ 2x FMVP 1x MVP
    16. Julius Erving - The good Dr., the FIRST MJ (before Magic & Jordan), The icon and face of BOTH leagues that saved the game in the 70’s. Kareem was the best but Doc was a close 2nd. Underrated statistical brilliance. Was like a 6’7-6’8 Giannis but with a better jump shot.
    3x Champ (1 NBA) 2x FMVP 4x MVP (1 NBA)
17.. Moses Malone - CHAIRMAN OF DA BOARDS. Arguably the best board getter… ever. Only Wilt, Russell, Rodman and Thurmond belong in the same discussion. Moses lead his people to the promise land more than once but was able to claim immortality in the early 80’s. His team lead by the dynamic duo of he and Doc dominated the league. Before Lakers v. Celtics it was 76ers v. Celtics-Lakers.
    1x Champ 1x FMVP 3xMVP
    18. John Havlicek - the GREAT one. MJ is 6-0.
Ole Johnny is 8-0. The offensive force off the bench or starting that lead the dynastic Celtics to all 8. Early in his career he was akin to Jordan Poole role on Warriors 22’ team but better at everything but the 3 ball.
Then in the late 60’s-70’s he sat in captains seat. His career is a unique mix.
Played like Pippen with elite perimeter shooting/scoring, early career was early Kobe-esque, late career MJ/Kobe-esque.
John’s game rose in the playoffs.
    8x Champ 1x FMVP (likely 4x)
    19. Giannis Antetokounmpo - it’s getting freaky… GreekMan is literally on the ride to potentially threatening Tim’s best PF title.
If he can add a couple more rings to his already HOF profile he will likely be the new PF or TOP 5 player. Yea. THAT GOOD.
    1x Champ 1x FMVP 2x MVP 1x DPOY
    20. Jerry West - The LOGO. Steph Curry before Steph. The man that built the LA franchise along Baylor post Mikan era.
Jerry West was the blueprint skill base for players like Kobe, MJ, TMac, etc
At 6’2-6’3 he torched his opponents his entire career and dropped plenty of dimes.
The ORIGINAL combo guard. So damn great he LOST and still won FMVP… case closed.
    1x Champ 1x FMVP
    21. Nikola Jokic - the Joker is no damn joke.
Genuinely a candidate for potential GOAT if his career pans out in the extreme positive like that of the top 10. Jokic is in a unique place being the greatest passing big statically NBA history (excluding Magic).
If Jokic finds a way to fit more jewelry in his fingers, we might have to have a real discussion about that greatest Center of all time discussion. Yes. Potentially a top 5 player alert.
1x MVP 1x FMVP 3x MVP (should’ve been 3 consecutive but you know
    22. Rick Barry - The ACTUAL “White Mamba”. Just predated the black one… Barry was the answer up until 85’ when you asked who the best SF ever. His game was similar to West but 6’7 and a better FT%. Controversial, cerebral and iconic.
Had so much game he had to share what was left with his sons…
    1x Champ 1x FMVP
    23. Kevin Garnett - The Big Ticket. The 00’ Giannis. In every way but he had a better jumper midrange and beyond. KG was a monstrosity on OFF/DEF in his prime much like his modern comparison.
Led the TWolves to relevance and led the 08’ Celtics to a chip. Truly the BIG TICKET.
    1x Champ 1x FMVP 1x MVP
    24. Dirk Nowitzki - DIGGLER. The one and only. The German Bird. THE Maverick. Dirk is one of the most beloved, iconic and acclaimed players ever. The 00’s stretch big supreme.
Dirk was able to take the Mavs to immortality over 11’ Heat in arguably the most surprising run ever.
    Only Dirk. Forever the DIGGLER.
    Arguably, the GOAT Euro player.
    1x Champ 1x FMVP 1x MVP
    25. Bob Pettit - Big Blue was the first stretch 4 in the games history. That’s for starters. Pettit was a tenacious rebounder and highly skilled scorer.
He was much akin to K. Love of his era but in better shape and played defense. Think a smaller Dirk who grabbed boards like Love but in the 50’s-60’s era. Not only that, much like Dirk, Pettit lead a historic upset over Russell’s Celtics. A true champ.
    1x Champ 1x FMVP 2x MVP
    26. Dwayne Wade - The Flash.
Wade County. The greatest Heat in NBA history. Wade is arguably the best defensive player at his position and easily too3 (MJ, Kobe). Led the Heat to a title in 06’ in historic fashion against Dirks Mavs.
Then winning a couple more as LBJ’s Pippen. His career was like Kobe’s… in reverse. Wade’s early injuries reduced his maximum career output but yet here he is… says a ton.
    3x Champ 1x FMVP
    27. Elgin Baylor - The PROTOTYPE.
Before West, Julius, Thompson, Wilkins, MJ, Hardaway, Kobe, Carter, TMac, Wade, Ant etc
There was Elgin Baylor. The first Air, the first Mamba, the first Half Man/Amazing, Flash etc
Baylor spearheaded an era that hardly wanted his talents there but had no other choice but to be in awe of it.
Think Harden, in shape but not as good of a playmaker, twice the rebounder and a better defender.
    That’s Elgin.
*left a season before historic LAL title win
    28. David Robinson - The Admiral.
The USA’s biggest weapon in the 90’s was also one of the greatest ever.
Made the spurs relevant pre-Duncan and post. Has some of the greatest seasons statistically. Think Giannis but 7’2 with a lefty and 15 footer plus an even better defender.
    2x Champ 1x MVP
    29. Karl Malone - the Mailman was LBJ minus the handles and vision.
King of the pick n roll.
    1x MVP

Hi@@jonnyarnett, greetings from Ireland! Love your content! Around 2 months ago, you posted a video analysis of 10 games from Jordan's DPOY season, in response to Tom Haberstroh’s article. You tracked every time Jordan got his hand on the ball to disrupt the opponents offense and you concluded at the end of your video that MJ's blocks were actually UNDER credited but his steals were intentionally inflated. Since the release of that video, countless people in your comment section have questioned your conclusion that some steals were gifted, as this simply does not explain the obvious surplus/deficit correlation between the steals and blocks that you tracked in those 10 games. Additionally, many of your viewers also pointed to the fact that steals were assessed differently in that Era, rendering your assessment of MJ's steals using today's rules, inapplicable. I note that you have since acknowledged these observations in your comment section and vowed to release a follow up video. I look forward to this updated video, hopefully it will address the following important points which were surprisingly omitted from your original analysis...
The footage from your 10 game breakdown revealed 15 occasions where Jordan got his hand on the opponent's ball, causing a deflection…you assessed these deflections as 15 'possible blocks' but noted that the Statistician did NOT credit these 15 blocks to MJ's official block count. That's a crucial discovery, and incidentally, one that Haberstroh failed to mention in his article, despite claiming to have analysed 6 of those games. Here is an important question Jonny that has yet to be answered... If that Statistician in 1987/88 was purposely inflating Jordan's defensive stats, why would he UNDER credit Jordan's blocks? If his goal truly was to inflate Jordan's defensive stats, there is no question that he would have credited every single one of those 15 'possible blocks' to MJ's block count...but he didn't. It's obvious to any rational person that the Statistician clearly assessed those 15 'possible blocks' as steals and credited them to Jordan’s official steal count. It's the most logical explanation for his block count being UNDER credited. Like many of your viewers, I was shocked that you failed to connect these dots in your original analysis.
The question is, was the Stat-keeper correct in assessing those 15 deflections as steals or should he have categorised them as blocks, as you did in your analysis? An answer to that question requires more detailed research into the rules of that Era and how blocks and steals were consistently interpreted and officiated at that time. I watched an old 1992 Bulls regular season game recently and noticed that on 2 separate occasions Jordan got his hand on the opponents ball in the passing lane, deflecting the ball to two of his teammates and the commentator announced “another steal for MJ” on both occasions, indicating that steals were credited to the player causing the deflection…this is not consistent with how you analysed MJ's steals during your original breakdown. Also, something else that you didn’t account for was the fact that the Statisticians in the 80's didn't have the luxury of relying on instant replay or multiple camera angles, they had to make an assessment in real time, from the side lines, so it's highly plausible that from the vantage point of the Statistician, an occasional block may have been mistakenly assessed as a steal. Just to reiterate Jonny, I think you did a great job overall on this topic, it's clear how much effort and hard work you put into it but a closer look at those steals is 100% warranted. The problem with these what if scenarios is no matter what point you making you can always make the "if" scenario fit whatever point you trying to make.
Also the biggest issue is that your trying to use what other teams and players did while M.J wasn't there. Meaning think about the Butterfly Effect. For example Tim Duncan decides to listen to a different radio station while going to the practice facility misses his turn and ends up getting to practice 5 mins late misses 2 mins of coaches talk says something to throw off a role players attention and causes him to get upset cusses at a worker there who has an attitude and is rude to a fan at the game that night and the fan on his way to his seat slips and falls distracting a player passing g the ball to Tim Duncan and hits him in the nose by accident breaking it Tim Duncan out for the season and the Spurs lose 45 games that season and now everyone is wondering if they would've been the team to stop the Bulls that year when they won their 8th title.
Point is you never know what would happen in the world altogether if Jordan doesn't retire

I can't believe you haven't realized that by now. How many coaches has Lebron fired throughout his career? Even in the last Olympics, Kerr gave in and put him in the PG spot instead of utilizing Haliburton's playmaking.

Need i continue? My point is this. We can debate if these coaches were good or not. All of the coaches fired or replaced have never had success since. Must be nice as mj fans to have phil jackson huh? I wonder if jordan switched with lebron would he had done the same thing. You can tell Arnett is not an athlete. You don’t buy that MJ was not in basketball shape just because he was dropping big scoring numbers???
I know 50 year old guys who haven’t hooped in years that would bust a lot of people up on short notice. When you are highly skilled and elite athlete, even when you not on the usual regimen, you will be nasty. It’s second nature.
However, if Arnett was an athlete, he would have noticed the tell tale signs MJ was not in b-ball shape. Baseball you exert yourself for very few minutes and it’s not a contact sport so you done need a lot of bulk and you use different muscles. Watching MJ for those 17 games you can clearly see him slipping on defense due to being winded, and you can see him quickness was a step off. Also, that tiredness caused loss of concentration which led to that famous turnover.
Now look at MJ the following 3 years when he was back in full b-ball shape. Those signs were gone and we saw what he and team did to the league.
Think for yourselves folks even with these TH-camrs. They are still giving opinions based on their level of knowledge and era they from. Case in point. This era these guys make lots of excuses and they are not forced to accept accountability. MJ’s generation we are realists and seemed and took responsibility. So if that man tells you he wasn’t in b-ball shape, he wasn’t in b-ball shape as video of those 17 games clearly shows.
    Good video over all though.

Eh. I'm going to have to disagree on that one.
Kemp had too good of a series. If Rodman had shut Kemp down, he'd have a better case.
Rodman was good on the offensive glass, but that was pretty typical play for Rodman when he was actually locked in. However, Kemp still lit him and everyone else up and it's not like Rodman was scoring out of his mind to compensate or something.
Jordan, on the other hand, held Hawkins and Payton below their regular season averages while Ron Harper was dealing with injuries.
And, in spite of shooting poorly for MJ standards, he still outscored everyone else in the process during that series.
Compared to all his other finals, MJ's efficiency wasn't great. But it was actually pretty average compared to a lot of other finals MVP's stats and shooting numbers.
In addition, nobody other than Kemp shot well in this series, and Kemp's numbers actually went up somewhat significantly compared to the regular season.
Kukoc had okay percentages but he did it only scoring about 10ppg. And Pippen shot even worse than Jordan (I think his FG% was like 35% or something).
The final votes for the finals MVP was fairly in line with who the best players were (IMO):
      1. Jordan
      2. Kemp
      3. Rodman

Hi @jonnyarnett, greetings from Ireland!
Either way, logic dictates Jordan's steals were not 'gifted' in those 10 games, his blocks were UNDER credited and his steals were over credited, by a very similar number...clearly the Statistician categorised those 15 'possible blocks' as steals, hence the surplus/deficit correlation between the blocks and steals.
Finally, it's important to note Jonny, even if your research into the rules of that Era reveals that those 15 deflections should have been categorised as blocks and not steals, that would amount to stat misplacement, NOT stat inflation. There's a very important distinction there. In such case, Jordan's official steals count for those 10 games would indeed need to be reduced by 15, however, his official block count would then need to be INCREASED by 15. So no matter which way you slice it, whether those 15 deflections are placed in the steals column or in the blocks column, it wouldn't change Jordan's overall defensive stats in those 10 games because you would essentially be subtracting 15 from one defensive column and adding 15 to another defensive column, which of course would have zero impact on the validity of MJ's DPOY award. Just to reiterate Jonny, I think you did a great job overall on this topic, it's clear how much effort and hard work you put into it but a closer look at those steals is 100% warranted. It just doesn't make sense that a Stat-keeper intent on inflating Jordan's defensive stats would UNDER credit his blocks by 15 over the course of 10 games.
