I miss the 90's, when no one cared about this crap. Edit : Not saying there was no censorship obviously, it's just that no one whined about it like they do now.
People want to see what they want to see. Lots of controversies in the 90's. Hell video games on the verge of being banned altogether if the industry didn't decide to cave to demands.
While technically censorship, I'm more annoyed at the blurred backgrounds, lack if analogue controls, lack of rumble, and the locking of the battle menu to a much lower fps. Especially when the latter 3 were in the original PS1 version. The only thing really remastered were the character models, which are beautiful, and the addition of trophies.
The character models were bad even on the PS1 I think. I hope somebody actually ports these new models back into the original game. I think that would look pretty cool

@tlessmo "Enhance" is the opposite of what they did to some of them, I've heard. They replaced some of the card designs with pretty cheap looking ones. The only one I actually saw posted was Angelo's card art, it was totally different in the original.
I think they should have just left the Siren model unchanged but I also think the Remastered needed more work put into it overall, particularly in touching up the pre-rendered backgrounds to better match with the new character models.
I personally feel the backgrounds could've just had a bit more work... Even if you had to delay it for 2 months I would've been fine with that. I'm still enjoying it though.
I absolutely, absolutely agree. "We are delaying the release of ff8remaster because we decided that we will rework the battle and scenario backgrounds." -if that ever happens, that will be the first delay from square enix that fans will respect.
When you talk about Siren being censored, I can accept that. But Rinoa? If you compare Rinoa with the FMV sequences, the outfit it's the same. People always need to have something bad to say about FF8.
This game came out when I was in my teens, an abrupt age with hormones and hair where there was no hair before. Syren (or Siren) did not do anything to me. Shiva's pose just made me summon her all the time, even when there were enemies who would absorb the ice attack, I did not care!
I don't think it's a big deal. I dug the old design, but it really isn't an issue to me and I wouldn't have noticed Rinoa's clothes at all either. The only thing I'm bothered by is how they made Squall look younger and his hair was altered quite a bit. In the original artwork, he looked somewhat mature for his age, which was nice.
While the censorship may not be too severe, it should still be called out to a reasonable degree. The seemingly innocuous nature of the changes may just be a way of seeing what they can get away with before enacting more dramatic censorship in future titles. I'm not proposing a conspiracy to censor content, but rather a reason to remain vigilant. All of you trying to sound cool by saying, "Who cares? Why so sensitive," should keep that in mind. Fans pointing out discrepancies are not necessarily being overly sensitive. I'm glad there are those out there with such an attention to detail that will make us aware of any differences.
The lamest censorship is the blood in Ultimecias castle and the president zombie . Like really ? It was ok to split squalls face open in a cut scene but this wasn’t acceptable lol

Another bit of censorship in remastered can be noticed during the Dollet invasion when Selphie falls off the cliff. Her actual fall is cut from the FMV (I think there might have been like a frame where, because she is rolling and tumbling, you can see up her skirt in the original). I disagree with censorship on principal, but this is one where even if you agree it needed to change, this was done so lazily and it looks like crap. Instead a fluid animation of her rolling down the cliff, there's almost a whole second where the whole screen just smears and it looked so bad I stopped playing on Switch and went back to the old Steam release.

In the case of Siren, it’s probably because of ratings; the prior re-releases were just ports and thus didn’t need to be re-rated. The remaster had to be re-rated, and it’s likely one board or another decided Siren needed to be censored to keep the original rating, e.g. stay T instead of M, or whatever other countries’ ratings companies use. Siren was probably called out over Shiva because with Shiva it’s obvious the thing covering her is “clothing” of some sort, whereas Siren’s covering looks like pubes, so is considered more explicit.
Siren could have been changed because it may be mistaken by hair because is blond and Siren has a lot of white and yellow on hair. Shiva is blue so while it could be mistaken too, maybe they decided that it doesnt look that much like hair. Rinoa's change could be just a new design as stated in the video.

People think Shiva's design not being changed while Siren's was, is some sign that the change was not censorship but "artistic vision" instead. I believe the reason only Siren was altered is simply because Siren looks more like an actual human with some "pube-looking" feathers covering her, while Shiva in FF8 has a striking and obvious non-human look to her.
Well, unfortunately, censorship is the least of a problem for this game. Just check out Digital Foundry technical video & check out steam discussions on how much of an lame job this remaster is. Not gonna lie, overworld map textures are downright awful. Obvious cash grab & pretty lazy on remaster-ing itself. I guess, back to the modding community fixing it again -_-

They did very well on character re-models....But lets be honest Square is already spread thin...they aren’t going to dumb resources into re doing the environments. For 20 bucks though Im not mad at it.

And I don't know what they were thinking with Rinoa's new model. But the rest of the characters and other models look great! (Well, I notice the 'not important' characters are..Flatter, blending into the backgrounds more. *shrugs * 20 is fair though vs being more for sure. But honestly I bought it for Steam to be opened to MODs later for what Square didn't do for the Remaster. I love 8, but I'm really hoping for the remake it deserves. I hope they go back to their roots a little for the next one. FFXV wasn't a bad game but it was lacking in so many areas and somewhat of a disappointment.
The only things that bothered me a little are the backgrounds, no rumble or 360 analog control and the fact that the music hilariously glitched out on me during the garden invasion. Other than that I loved playing it again and have my platinum.
With regards to Siren and Shiva, I think it comes down to what it looks like. When That thought came to me, I look back at PS1 Siren and it does look like a patch of hair between her legs. Shiva, on the other hand, looks, at worse, to have Barbie anatomy. Also Shiva tends to (almost) always be in motion while Siren just sits on a rock playing her harp, which gives players more time to contemplate what they’re seeing.
Really don't see the problem here. A slightly retooled skirt and top on two different character models in a game with hundreds of character models is barely noticeable either way. I'm not sure I'd even say Rinoa was altered specifically as an attempt to remove the deeper v-cut, but to make the top more fashionable - which is what character/costume designers are there to do. Her vest is almost an entirely different color now to match the sky blue of the look of the original cinematics/promo material and there's more texture that gives the material a different look and weight. I think this was 100% about better detail and design than cleavage.
The idea of censorship is worrisome and in many cases can be downright infuriating. But that just isn't the case with these 2 examples. Not for me anyway. I couldn't care less about Siren's change simple because I think it looks a lot better to me. I feel like Rinoa's OG model didnt really show more skin or anything. It just looks like an old attempt at her dress style with dated software making things kinda crappy. All of the new models look better the more I look at them I look at them. I suppose the only time I really have an issue is when the storyline is changed in some way due to censorship. Other than that, I'm cool. Frankly I'm more interested in what these other issues are with this as I haven't had the money to buy it yet and would like to know if I should hold off for a while
Final Fantasy VIII was the very first of the series that I ever had the pleasure of playing. Just being able to play it on my PS4 and relive the story and the characters is beyond satisfying. I actually find the changes to Rinoa and Siren to be a step up. Siren has more feathers! MORE FEATHERS! EVERYWHERE! They made her hair longer and her plumage even bigger! Seems like an upgrade to me. If it was true censorship they would have covered Shiva with more ice. As for Rinoa; I was watching the cutscene ::spolier alert:: after Garden takes off and you get a lovely close up of Rinoa leaning over the side to watch the birds. I realozed then that her remodel actually matches the cutscene version of her character. It was a nice realization. The only things that have shocked me so far are the sudden change of Headmaster Cid's model from new to the static old model when he's explaining your exam requirements, and the entirety of the Deling City chapter with Edea. Walked out of Caraway's mansion to see a bland, blurry, static crowd... Then entered the next map to see 2 brand new models in the grass having a picnic... But then Rinoa meets Edea and the Odine Pendant had an actual model instead of blurred lines that you could barely tell what it was supposed to be before. Background issues aside, I think they've done a fantastic job so far. Maybe we'll even get patches correcting some things they missed? Until then though, HD Moombas! So cute...
Yes me too. They can't keep cartoonish designs when transitioning to modern graphical standards, they have to change the outfit designs. I'm not mad to be honest, I think the new designs are a step up too
Minor and relatively speaking, not really significant; I don't specifically miss Ms Heartilly's assets and Siren's display is rather limited, even on the original version to a few frames; honestly I'd just go for Shiva if I was really that desperate. HOWEVER it is a fact that should you start permitting one exception to any degree of censorship then you'll find yourself inevitably consumed with a vast degree down the line. To put it short and sweet; you offer an inch, they'll take a mile. Hence forth my understanding and supporting of the reaction to censorship as a whole.

Siren and Rinoa look like censorship, considering the changes. And seeing how it was released on Playstation 4 who is infamous for censoring Japanese games? Let's just say it didn't inspire confidence. Personally, I am rather iffy about redesigns as well. Didn't buy the Spyro Reignited Trilogy because of the redesign. Hunter with a small mouth? Sheila not looking like a tomboy character but like an Australian gal? I rather have the original vision of the designs preserved. At least for the most important characters. Striking characteristics (big mouth, tomboy look, and so on) that are removed change the character for me just too much and are distracting. And I am saying this despite liking the drastic redesign of one of the characters. Anyway, I don't mind others enjoying those games regardless. I am just not personally in favor of those.

Perhaps Siren was "revised" because she's more skin colored than Shiva? Regardless, if it was just a design change without the ethics department meddling in, it does make the game "lesser" than the original in this regard
...I always thought Siren had nude bottoms. As they say, "do the drapes match the carpet". Yes. Yes they do. On that basis, I can understand why her character model needed adjustment to fit the current trend of game design. Holding off for now, but only because I've already bought the original FF8 twice~
nope you are right it did not need new models just the ones there were needed to be sharp and more like the original consept art when modders can do a better job then SquareEnix then we know how low the standdaards have become

3:14 omg when you zoom that close to the ps1 models they look so derpy. Also they did change Squalls skin tone to more of an olive complexion rather than peachy so it might all be due to design revision.

With siren its not like you can see a slit or anything between her legs and her bush is yellow. It doesnt look real. Rinoas top is dumb too. Its not like we saw her nipples or anything. That isn't the point. Were not really annoyed that it will compromise our gaming experience. But for a company to go through such MINOR edits and obvious ones at that like the Siren summon is absurd. What the original poster said about us being irritated based on principle alone is the truth. If they really are willing to go such lengths to censor games now as much to make such tiny minor modications in a game that really had nothing to censor in the first. Just think what the future of sony games would be like for the japanese rpgs. We have already seen this at stake to where sony censored a characters BARE legs cause you know like women aren't allowed to show their bare legs? Its ridiculous on all levels and Sony California division needs to be over ruled because of this kind of crap we have to deal with now.

And with Siren makes sense to a point as well albeit I feel like they could have done some different slight design rather than what it is right now. Could have kept whatever type of undergarment or whatever it was but have feathers extending over it at the hip only. Would suit the design better imo.
I absolutely detest this kind of censorship, it doesn't matter if it's Sony or someone else or even if Square Enix did it of their own accord. I can see that Rinoa's change was perhaps not censorship outright, but Syren is too obvious. It wouldn't surprise me if the rating board has claimed that Syren looks more human than Shiva and therefore must be toned down to not get a higher age rating, which is of course utterly ridiculous. I hope a patch is released on PC fixing this crap eventually.

I'm just appreciative of having the remaster considering how long it took and the obstacles that were presented with remastering the game... like I say about most things, if you people don't like the game or have issues, then don't buy or play it and stop complaining about trivial stuff
it's not really "claiming" it's censored, when it's blatantly obvious that it was. Does it overly matter? No. But it's important to document these changes, rather than just sweep it under the rug, so to speak. I feel that the same would be done if the bar was moved in the opposite direction and things were made more revealing instead.
The original was made that way for horny reasons. The remake tones it down the tiiiniest but too adjust for cultural changes. If this is gonna make you upset or make you decide not to play the game, you need to look for less horny reasons to enjoy a game.
I am more concerned with the quality of the backgrounds. Sometimes the 3d models look fine on them, but there are scenes/battles where the gap in quality between the bg and model is too obvious. Square enix could have worked on these backgrounds more. The censored rinoa and siren - even ff7r tifa - does not concern me a bit.
I'm sure alot of folks heard the saying "You give them an inch, they take a mile" - that what the Siren change could be, where Square Enix gave the SJWs an inch, and I wonder if the SJWs will try alter FF7R before its released.

The Siren change seems arbitrary, which smells to me of Sony involvement since they're reluctant to codify what their policies are regarding mandated changes in the way of censorship. Usually Sony "policy" falls on depictions of women and mandated the change that we saw to Tifa's design later on, which, despite Square's claims that it was an internal decision, I believe was down to Sony San Mateo.

Rinoas shirt is two inchies higher, Sirens wings cover her crotch, thats obvious but yest the irony is that Sorceress Edea still shows the same amount of cleavage from the original game and the GF Sira still is basically wearing a scandilily clad bathing suit. On top of that there are tomes when Selphies camera angle when usibg her Slots ult i swear up and down she isnt wearing any underwear. I might be wrong about Selphie but jusy play the remastered and watch the camera angle when using her ult to see is im right or wrong. Why else would the camera angle zoom oit right beforr she uses the slots the player chooses for her? The few censored changes they made are really dumb in my mind i think they should have left the changes alone in my mind
Also could be issues with ratings boards. I know my country “Australia” as had issues with the weirdest bits. Like how on one game they wanted a mission pulled for referencing drugs. But there were such references throughout the game and that mission was actually one of the more tame ones. “Also cant remember there name but one game got banned because one parent decided they didn’t like the game without actually looking at the game beyond the cover”.
I'm against censorship too, but this is hardly a big deal. People are making a WAY bigger deal about this. But I guess everyone is ok with the awful background graphics? The awful looking world map? The fact that everyone in Deling City has a ps1 sprite? (seriously was it so hard to update all the models?) The lack of analogue controls (can only move in 8 directions), the lack of vibration? THE FACT THAT DURING THE BALAMB vs GALBADIA SECTION THERES STILL MIDI MUSIC??? (makes one of the hypest moments in the game pretty lame in comparison). Hmmm, what else? Oh yeah, menu fps went from 60 to 16 for the remaster and it feels clunky. I love this game, FFVIII is one of my favourite games of all time, and even though I love replaying it again, this remaster is really lazy. Are they going to fix all of those issues? Probably not. Might aswell play the digital version on the Ps3, aside from the graphics its actually a smoother experience.
Seeing as it would have been far easier to just upscale the model as opposed to making any design changes to it _[meaning it was a deliberate choice]_ , and seeing as how said design changes were very very obviously done for the purpose of censorship, and seeing as how censorship is almost universally a bad thing (and it certainly is in this case) -- yes, I would say that there is more than sufficient justification to be upset at this.
I bet the animators/modelers on Siren were simply just "ehhh let's make it more of an actual feather skirt cuz the old version makes no sense as is" or however they were feeling that day. Shiva is basically naked by design and they didn't change that. The Rinoa design choice is nothing, it's a matter of pixels and I doubt anyone was even thinking about that character's chest in remodeling.
based on early impressions of the remaster on PC, evidence suggests that all consoles are running a decompiled version of the original PC edition released in 2000 - possibly with some kind of x86 emulator. This may explain why the new release shares many of the more disappointing quirks of the original PC port, which compare unfavourably with the PS1 version. Firstly, there are no analogue controls. It's just like the PC version in that regard, which relied on keyboard arrow keys - giving you only eight directions of movement, even if you're using PS4's analogue sticks. The PS1 version gave you fine, 360 degree gradients of control on the analogue controller. It meant it was much, much easier to line up to an NPC and talk to them or to use draw points. As it is here though, you end up walking around like a robot. Equally, rumble is entirely missing from this version and so you don't get any feedback during Squall's limit breaks. In some respects, maybe just emulating the PS1 version would have given us a better time here.

The reason Siren is censored and not Shiva would be that in Siren's case, it could be mistaken with blond pubic hairs (and female pubic hairs seem to be evil for some people).
I don't think it should be any issue. I'm a character designer and the detail about Sirene GF is that is supposed to be a sort of bikini just like Shiva. The thing is that Shiva's covered area is blue to let you know that is some material covering this area and is not hair. Sirene bikini if you can call it that is the same color as her hair-feathers. This particularly make the bikini looks like pubic hair but is not and never was. But who could tell the difference back then from a 4 pixel picture?
I think Siren looks better with the feather skirt. With the original model you are wondering, “Are those feathers, or is she...un-shorn?”. Ryan, at 4:33 , nice try to convince us you are human. We all know you are actually condensed Support Materia (because you make us all better)!
Minor and not noteworthy. Both Rinoa and Siren are still hot- the tweaking is very mild and from my immediate memory didn't even notice. If they changed the outfit all together new colors and styles then I'd be miffed. Tiffa looks great too.
Despite the updated character models making the backgrounds look worse by comparison as well as Siren being altered, I'm just happy that the game is finally on modern consoles.
3:14 ok i know the ps1 models looked bad, but they never looked that bad. I played the PS1 version just a few months back. Also you missed other censorships. Such as blood being removed or changed to green in places such as Ultimecia's castle. And Gerogero's intestines changed to blue.
In the case of FFXV, it's more about purely "business" decision to completely scrapped the mafia-like & Death's goddess worship/beliefs on Kingdom of Lucis. Other countries would put the game on more mature rating, some were outright gonna banned it, not including the overall trouble development hell on the game itself.

@William E Well the original was sensored too, in the english localization. The japanese use much harsher language. So you guys can't play that one either if you want to fight censorship, sorry.
@William E The point is in every product that makes it to the market there are aspects which are sensored, for a myriad of reasons. That's just the reality of profit motives in a regulated marketplace. In order to apply your solution evenly, you will have to stop supporting ALL creative media altogether. No more buying games, ever. You'll need a workaround to enjoy anything. If you want to live like that go right ahead, but don't pretent like being selectively outraged by this one tiny example is doing anything to fight censorship.

Do you honestly believe for one second, that if you didn't have a side by side comparison with Siren, that you would know her bush was censored? We don't need 2 modes. One where you see Siren's bush and one where you don't see Siren's bush. How laughably ridiculous. All you really need to do, is not care that Siren has a skirt on because, why on earth would that be important to you? Two modes for this minor design change that effects nothing thematically, and amounts to a 3 second animation in a 60 hour game. Do you realize how silly that sounds? Censorship is not ideal. We want less of it ideally, but it's just a reality that a game rated Teen has to worry about its image. And all censorship isn't equal, I didn't say that. Censorship of themes and plot devices are one thing, but this has got to be one of the most minor examples I can possibly imagine. It isn't even censorship it's really just a new dress. Ooh Square covered a monster's vaginal bush because it's in HD now and they didn't want any backlash. SO? It's arbitrary that you care enough about this to boycott the game about this simply because it was brought up to you, but not any other game. I mean you don't think bigger stuff than that was cut to get a Teen rating? Worry more about them censoring things that matter to the plot, in something new like FF7R. THAT'S something we can be concerned about. But it's going to happen anyway since the game needs to target a T for Teen in every country, so it's a reality whether we like it or not. Whether I'll support that kind of censorship remains to be seen because it depends entirely on how much it will bastardize the intent of the original game's message. If the thematic depth of the game remains in tact, as it does here, then I will gladly be playing the crap out of it. And you know what? Those things were already censored when the game was first brought over anyway. So by your standard of not supporting anything that was censored for any reason, we can't support that either. FF1 had censored religious imagery too so we can't support that game. Crono trigger had a drinking game changed to a soup eating contest so we can never pay for that. FF6 had a scene where Celes was beaten removed so let's make sure that we never support that game monetarily either. And these are JUST the few things I'm aware of. How this skirt addition is any more egregious than those things escapes me. In fact it's even more inconsequential. And yet I'm sure you've supported some of those games before. So as I said, by your own standard (not paying for anything that was ever censored), you should probably not partake in this hobby. Get some perspective and stop being so selectively triggered. I'll say it again. Now bye bye I'm done with this. Talking about whether or not I see Siren's bush is not worth this much time out of my life. And certainly not enough to pirate the game out of rage.

I honestly don't get the big deal and if people really want to look at some bushes, there's plenty available on cam sites. You can even pay them to cosplay Siren if that's the jam they want with their cookie :P I find it weird they touched up on Siren but not Shiva. There's inconsistency in the supposed "censoring." I really have no idea what they were able and not able to do for the remastered or even, heck, what they may have forgotten to do. We went so many months without a hint they were even doing anything for the anniversary of the game this year. This was my first RPG as a kid and it was said the game wouldn't be remastered because of the coding issues. I can't see in between Rinoa's breast but I think I'll live.
I think they censored siren and not shiva because siren shows clearly pubic hair. It's blonde and it's hairy. When you see it you immediately recognise what it is. With shiva it's a little different because it doesnt show hair and it's well... blue. It could be a very thin underwear for all we know, or maybe that's how a reproductive organ of a hindu godess should look like, but since it's not too close to what a human vagina looks like they decided to not censor it. Either way the whole thing is stupid. Censoring it was stupid. Making a fuss about something so trivial is stupid. But, here we all are debating about it.
I don't see Rinoa's model in VIII remastered as censorship. The less deeper cut was in the concept art for her as well as FFVIII art featuring her. For whatever reason, her black shirt looks like it's revealing more probably due to limitations at that time and the placement of her textures. I'm not saying this to cover for Square as I already have my own issues with them as a company anyway. I'm also not saying this is for a fact, this is just what I've seen based on the various artworks and official pics of her. They may have also wanted to somewhat base her model off of her Dissidia NT character model.
Censorship used to be less of an issue in Europe before. Now it's kind of a hit and miss: some games get the same censorship as in the US, while others don't. Digital distribution's popularity is definitely a big factor.
It has been sensors. Sirens skirt is because the feathers originally looked like hair in her “cookie jar” area the reason shivas wasn’t is because it looks like an armor plate. And Rinoa is a 17 year old girl. Her top was raised because of the cleavage that was featured for an under age girl.
When I was a boy I thought Siren wore nothing below the waist and what you saw was body hair, because it's the same color as her hair. So I get why they would censor her, even though I don't like it.
Priinciply I’m put off by it, but I have more issues with the controls not in sync and vibration function missing from the PS4 and probably the other console versions as well. Censorship has been an issue in FF since the dancers weren’t able to take off their dresses in SNES FFII like they could in the Super Famicom version of FFIV back in 1991.
On the topic of censorship as a whole, there are questions I believe must be asked: What type of Censorship is it? For what reason is it Censored?/who is the Censorship for? Was the item Censored actually harmful? Does the Censorship cause more harm then good? If they went in the other direction, would I be fine with it? Too many times, I’ve seen people react immediately against the Censorship without stopping to consider the reasoning of it and whether or not it’s actually causing any harm that I feel it’s less about what the actual Censorship to them and about what it would mean for them to accept the Censorship.

While technically censorship, I'm more annoyed at the blurred backgrounds, lack if analogue controls, lack of rumble, and the locking of the battle menu to a much lower fps. Especially when the latter 3 were in the original PS1 version.
The only thing really remastered were the character models, which are beautiful, and the addition of trophies.

@tlessmo "Enhance" is the opposite of what they did to some of them, I've heard. They replaced some of the card designs with pretty cheap looking ones. The only one I actually saw posted was Angelo's card art, it was totally different in the original.

I think they should have just left the Siren model unchanged but I also think the Remastered needed more work put into it overall, particularly in touching up the pre-rendered backgrounds to better match with the new character models.
I personally feel the backgrounds could've just had a bit more work... Even if you had to delay it for 2 months I would've been fine with that.

This game came out when I was in my teens, an abrupt age with hormones and hair where there was no hair before. Syren (or Siren) did not do anything to me. Shiva's pose just made me summon her all the time, even when there were enemies who would absorb the ice attack, I did not care!

I don't think it's a big deal. I dug the old design, but it really isn't an issue to me and I wouldn't have noticed Rinoa's clothes at all either. The only thing I'm bothered by is how they made Squall look younger and his hair was altered quite a bit. In the original artwork, he looked somewhat mature for his age, which was nice.
While the censorship may not be too severe, it should still be called out to a reasonable degree. The seemingly innocuous nature of the changes may just be a way of seeing what they can get away with before enacting more dramatic censorship in future titles. I'm not proposing a conspiracy to censor content, but rather a reason to remain vigilant.

Another bit of censorship in remastered can be noticed during the Dollet invasion when Selphie falls off the cliff. Her actual fall is cut from the FMV (I think there might have been like a frame where, because she is rolling and tumbling, you can see up her skirt in the original). I disagree with censorship on principal, but this is one where even if you agree it needed to change, this was done so lazily and it looks like crap. Instead a fluid animation of her rolling down the cliff, there's almost a whole second where the whole screen just smears and it looked so bad I stopped playing on Switch and went back to the old Steam release.

In the case of Siren, it’s probably because of ratings; the prior re-releases were just ports and thus didn’t need to be re-rated. The remaster had to be re-rated, and it’s likely one board or another decided Siren needed to be censored to keep the original rating, e.g. stay T instead of M, or whatever other countries’ ratings companies use. Siren was probably called out over Shiva because with Shiva it’s obvious the thing covering her is “clothing” of some sort, whereas Siren’s covering looks like pubes, so is considered more explicit.
Siren could have been changed because it may be mistaken by hair because is blond and Siren has a lot of white and yellow on hair. Shiva is blue so while it could be mistaken too, maybe they decided that it doesnt look that much like hair. Rinoa's change could be just a new design as stated in the video.

People think Shiva's design not being changed while Siren's was, is some sign that the change was not censorship but "artistic vision" instead. I believe the reason only Siren was altered is simply because Siren looks more like an actual human with some "pube-looking" feathers covering her, while Shiva in FF8 has a striking and obvious non-human look to her.
Well, unfortunately, censorship is the least of a problem for this game. Just check out Digital Foundry technical video & check out steam discussions on how much of an lame job this remaster is. Not gonna lie, overworld map textures are downright awful. Obvious cash grab & pretty lazy on remaster-ing itself. I guess, back to the modding community fixing it again -_-

They did very well on character re-models....But lets be honest Square is already spread thin...they aren’t going to dumb resources into re doing the environments. For 20 bucks though Im not mad at it.

With regards to Siren and Shiva, I think it comes down to what it looks like. When That thought came to me, I look back at PS1 Siren and it does look like a patch of hair between her legs. Shiva, on the other hand, looks, at worse, to have Barbie anatomy. Also Shiva tends to (almost) always be in motion while Siren just sits on a rock playing her harp, which gives players more time to contemplate what they’re seeing.
Tbh, I just hope they do a remake of THIS GAME.

Really don't see the problem here. A slightly retooled skirt and top on two different character models in a game with hundreds of character models is barely noticeable either way. I'm not sure I'd even say Rinoa was altered specifically as an attempt to remove the deeper v-cut, but to make the top more fashionable - which is what character/costume designers are there to do. Her vest is almost an entirely different color now to match the sky blue of the look of the original cinematics/promo material and there's more texture that gives the material a different look and weight. I think this was 100% about better detail and design than cleavage.
The idea of censorship is worrisome and in many cases can be downright infuriating. But that just isn't the case with these 2 examples. Not for me anyway. I couldn't care less about Siren's change simple because I think it looks a lot better to me. I feel like Rinoa's OG model didnt really show more skin or anything. It just looks like an old attempt at her dress style with dated software making things kinda crappy. All of the new models look better the more I look at them I look at them. I suppose the only time I really have an issue is when the storyline is changed in some way due to censorship. Other than that, I'm cool. Frankly I'm more interested in what these other issues are with this as I haven't had the money to buy it yet and would like to know if I should hold off for a while
Final Fantasy VIII was the very first of the series that I ever had the pleasure of playing. Just being able to play it on my PS4 and relive the story and the characters is beyond satisfying. I actually find the changes to Rinoa and Siren to be a step up. Siren has more feathers! MORE FEATHERS! EVERYWHERE! They made her hair longer and her plumage even bigger! Seems like an upgrade to me. If it was true censorship they would have covered Shiva with more ice. As for Rinoa; I was watching the cutscene ::spolier alert:: after Garden takes off and you get a lovely close up of Rinoa leaning over the side to watch the birds. I realozed then that her remodel actually matches the cutscene version of her character. It was a nice realization.
The only things that have shocked me so far are the sudden change of Headmaster Cid's model from new to the static old model when he's explaining your exam requirements, and the entirety of the Deling City chapter with Edea. Walked out of Caraway's mansion to see a bland, blurry, static crowd... Then entered the next map to see 2 brand new models in the grass having a picnic... But then Rinoa meets Edea and the Odine Pendant had an actual model instead of blurred lines that you could barely tell what it was supposed to be before.
Background issues aside, I think they've done a fantastic job so far. Maybe we'll even get patches correcting some things they missed? Until then though, HD Moombas! So cute...
Yes me too. They can't keep cartoonish designs when transitioning to modern graphical standards, they have to change the outfit designs. I'm not mad to be honest, I think the new designs are a step up too
Minor and relatively speaking, not really significant; I don't specifically miss Ms Heartilly's assets and Siren's display is rather limited, even on the original version to a few frames; honestly I'd just go for Shiva if I was really that desperate. HOWEVER it is a fact that should you start permitting one exception to any degree of censorship then you'll find yourself inevitably consumed with a vast degree down the line.
To put it short and sweet; you offer an inch, they'll take a mile. Hence forth my understanding and supporting of the reaction to censorship as a whole.

Personally, I am rather iffy about redesigns as well. Didn't buy the Spyro Reignited Trilogy because of the redesign. Hunter with a small mouth? Sheila not looking like a tomboy character but like an Australian gal? I rather have the original vision of the designs preserved. At least for the most important characters. Striking characteristics (big mouth, tomboy look, and so on) that are removed change the character for me just too much and are distracting. And I am saying this despite liking the drastic redesign of one of the characters.
Anyway, I don't mind others enjoying those games regardless. I am just not personally in favor of those.

That isn't the point. Were not really annoyed that it will compromise our gaming experience. But for a company to go through such MINOR edits and obvious ones at that like the Siren summon is absurd. What the original poster said about us being irritated based on principle alone is the truth. If they really are willing to go such lengths to censor games now as much to make such tiny minor modications in a game that really had nothing to censor in the first. Just think what the future of sony games would be like for the japanese rpgs. We have already seen this at stake to where sony censored a characters BARE legs cause you know like women aren't allowed to show their bare legs? Its ridiculous on all levels and Sony California division needs to be over ruled because of this kind of crap we have to deal with now.

And with Siren makes sense to a point as well albeit I feel like they could have done some different slight design rather than what it is right now. Could have kept whatever type of undergarment or whatever it was but have feathers extending over it at the hip only. Would suit the design better imo.
I absolutely detest this kind of censorship, it doesn't matter if it's Sony or someone else or even if Square Enix did it of their own accord. I can see that Rinoa's change was perhaps not censorship outright, but Syren is too obvious. It wouldn't surprise me if the rating board has claimed that Syren looks more human than Shiva and therefore must be toned down to not get a higher age rating, which is of course utterly ridiculous. I hope a patch is released on PC fixing this crap eventually.

it's not really "claiming" it's censored, when it's blatantly obvious that it was. Does it overly matter? No. But it's important to document these changes, rather than just sweep it under the rug, so to speak. I feel that the same would be done if the bar was moved in the opposite direction and things were made more revealing instead.
The original was made that way for horny reasons. The remake tones it down the tiiiniest but too adjust for cultural changes.
If this is gonna make you upset or make you decide not to play the game, you need to look for less horny reasons to enjoy a game.

I am more concerned with the quality of the backgrounds. Sometimes the 3d models look fine on them, but there are scenes/battles where the gap in quality between the bg and model is too obvious. Square enix could have worked on these backgrounds more.

The Siren change seems arbitrary, which smells to me of Sony involvement since they're reluctant to codify what their policies are regarding mandated changes in the way of censorship. Usually Sony "policy" falls on depictions of women and mandated the change that we saw to Tifa's design later on, which, despite Square's claims that it was an internal decision, I believe was down to Sony San Mateo.

I'm against censorship too, but this is hardly a big deal. People are making a WAY bigger deal about this. But I guess everyone is ok with the awful background graphics? The awful looking world map? The fact that everyone in Deling City has a ps1 sprite? (seriously was it so hard to update all the models?) The lack of analogue controls (can only move in 8 directions), the lack of vibration? THE FACT THAT DURING THE BALAMB vs GALBADIA SECTION THERES STILL MIDI MUSIC??? (makes one of the hypest moments in the game pretty lame in comparison). Hmmm, what else? Oh yeah, menu fps went from 60 to 16 for the remaster and it feels clunky.
I love this game, FFVIII is one of my favourite games of all time, and even though I love replaying it again, this remaster is really lazy. Are they going to fix all of those issues? Probably not. Might aswell play the digital version on the Ps3, aside from the graphics its actually a smoother experience.

Seeing as it would have been far easier to just upscale the model as opposed to making any design changes to it _[meaning it was a deliberate choice]_ , and seeing as how said design changes were very very obviously done for the purpose of censorship, and seeing as how censorship is almost universally a bad thing (and it certainly is in this case) -- yes, I would say that there is more than sufficient justification to be upset at this.
I bet the animators/modelers on Siren were simply just "ehhh let's make it more of an actual feather skirt cuz the old version makes no sense as is"
or however they were feeling that day. Shiva is basically naked by design and they didn't change that. The Rinoa design choice is nothing, it's a matter of pixels and I doubt anyone was even thinking about that character's chest in remodeling.

This may explain why the new release shares many of the more disappointing quirks of the original PC port, which compare unfavourably with the PS1 version.
Firstly, there are no analogue controls. It's just like the PC version in that regard, which relied on keyboard arrow keys - giving you only eight directions of movement, even if you're using PS4's analogue sticks. The PS1 version gave you fine, 360 degree gradients of control on the analogue controller. It meant it was much, much easier to line up to an NPC and talk to them or to use draw points. As it is here though, you end up walking around like a robot. Equally, rumble is entirely missing from this version and so you don't get any feedback during Squall's limit breaks. In some respects, maybe just emulating the PS1 version would have given us a better time here.

IMO the "plot" being covered doesn't take away from the narrative so I'm not worrying over it.
Also the "Eyes on Me" song during scene of Squall & Rinoa when they activated Ragnarok.
The reason Siren is censored and not Shiva would be that in Siren's case, it could be mistaken with blond pubic hairs (and female pubic hairs seem to be evil for some people).
I don't think it should be any issue. I'm a character designer and the detail about Sirene GF is that is supposed to be a sort of bikini just like Shiva. The thing is that Shiva's covered area is blue to let you know that is some material covering this area and is not hair. Sirene bikini if you can call it that is the same color as her hair-feathers. This particularly make the bikini looks like pubic hair but is not and never was. But who could tell the difference back then from a 4 pixel picture?
I think Siren looks better with the feather skirt. With the original model you are wondering, “Are those feathers, or is she...un-shorn?”. Ryan, at 4:33 , nice try to convince us you are human. We all know you are actually condensed Support Materia (because you make us all better)!
Minor and not noteworthy. Both Rinoa and Siren are still hot- the tweaking is very mild and from my immediate memory didn't even notice. If they changed the outfit all together new colors and styles then I'd be miffed.

Despite the updated character models making the backgrounds look worse by comparison as well as Siren being altered, I'm just happy that the game is finally on modern consoles.

Also you missed other censorships. Such as blood being removed or changed to green in places such as Ultimecia's castle. And Gerogero's intestines changed to blue.
All ff games are censored in some way. Religious symbols, nudity language.
In the case of FFXV, it's more about purely "business" decision to completely scrapped the mafia-like & Death's goddess worship/beliefs on Kingdom of Lucis. Other countries would put the game on more mature rating, some were outright gonna banned it, not including the overall trouble development hell on the game itself.

This does not bother me. I don't like censorship, but this seems minor to me personally. I have 30 hours in the game on PS4.
Just emulate with ragnarock mod and turn up resolution on settings .... much much better, you even have fast forward and save states
They remade every model in the entire game from the ground up, they did not up-res them. And there is also fast forward.

That's just the reality of profit motives in a regulated marketplace. In order to apply your solution evenly, you will have to stop supporting ALL creative media altogether. If you want to live like that go right ahead, but don't pretent like being selectively outraged by this one tiny example is doing anything to fight censorship.

The reason why you aren't outraged about the things that get cut from your favorite games before release, or scenes from your favorite movie, is because you don't know about them. Do you honestly believe for one second, that if you didn't have a side by side comparison with Siren, that you would know her bush was censored?
We don't need 2 modes. One where you see Siren's bush and one where you don't see Siren's bush. How laughably ridiculous. All you really need to do, is not care that Siren has a skirt on because, why on earth would that be important to you? Two modes for this minor design change that effects nothing thematically, and amounts to a 3 second animation in a 60 hour game. Do you realize how silly that sounds?
Censorship is not ideal. We want less of it ideally, but it's just a reality that a game rated Teen has to worry about its image. And all censorship isn't equal, I didn't say that. Censorship of themes and plot devices are one thing, but this has got to be one of the most minor examples I can possibly imagine. It isn't even censorship it's really just a new dress. Ooh Square covered a monster's vaginal bush because it's in HD now and they didn't want any backlash. SO?
It's arbitrary that you care enough about this to boycott the game about this simply because it was brought up to you, but not any other game. I mean you don't think bigger stuff than that was cut to get a Teen rating? Worry more about them censoring things that matter to the plot, in something new like FF7R. THAT'S something we can be concerned about. But it's going to happen anyway since the game needs to target a T for Teen in every country, so it's a reality whether we like it or not.
Whether I'll support that kind of censorship remains to be seen because it depends entirely on how much it will bastardize the intent of the original game's message. If the thematic depth of the game remains in tact, as it does here, then I will gladly be playing the crap out of it.
And you know what? Those things were already censored when the game was first brought over anyway. So by your standard of not supporting anything that was censored for any reason, we can't support that either. FF1 had censored religious imagery too so we can't support that game. Crono trigger had a drinking game changed to a soup eating contest so we can never pay for that. FF6 had a scene where Celes was beaten removed so let's make sure that we never support that game monetarily either. And these are JUST the few things I'm aware of.
How this skirt addition is any more egregious than those things escapes me. In fact it's even more inconsequential. And yet I'm sure you've supported some of those games before. So as I said, by your own standard (not paying for anything that was ever censored), you should probably not partake in this hobby.

I find it weird they touched up on Siren but not Shiva. There's inconsistency in the supposed "censoring." I really have no idea what they were able and not able to do for the remastered or even, heck, what they may have forgotten to do. Maybe Shiva was meant to cover up her 'cookie jar' (srsly thank you, that's so great to me XD) and they didn't notice. Wouldn't be the first time they've released something and it wasn't finished. But also, if they really were "censoring for the 'sensitive snowflakes,'" then why keep Siren's cleavage? It's still pretty obviously there in the screenshots. I see more shading in the remastered for the side of her breasts than the original.
I think people just wanna bitch that they don't get access to bushfields and their strange hatred for "SJW's" which may need to be addressed in therapy for something deeper. Honestly, I'm grateful the game was remastered. We went so many months without a hint they were even doing anything for the anniversary of the game this year. This was my first RPG as a kid and it was said the game wouldn't be remastered because of the coding issues. I can't see in between Rinoa's breast but I think I'll live.
I think they censored siren and not shiva because siren shows clearly pubic hair. It's blonde and it's hairy. When you see it you immediately recognise what it is. With shiva it's a little different because it doesnt show hair and it's well... blue. It could be a very thin underwear for all we know, or maybe that's how a reproductive organ of a hindu godess should look like, but since it's not too close to what a human vagina looks like they decided to not censor it. Either way the whole thing is stupid. Censoring it was stupid. Making a fuss about something so trivial is stupid. But, here we all are debating about it.

I don't see Rinoa's model in VIII remastered as censorship. The less deeper cut was in the concept art for her as well as FFVIII art featuring her. For whatever reason, her black shirt looks like it's revealing more probably due to limitations at that time and the placement of her textures. I'm not saying this to cover for Square as I already have my own issues with them as a company anyway. I'm also not saying this is for a fact, this is just what I've seen based on the various artworks and official pics of her. They may have also wanted to somewhat base her model off of her Dissidia NT character model.
Censorship used to be less of an issue in Europe before. Now it's kind of a hit and miss: some games get the same censorship as in the US, while others don't. Digital distribution's popularity is definitely a big factor.

It has been sensors. Sirens skirt is because the feathers originally looked like hair in her “cookie jar” area the reason shivas wasn’t is because it looks like an armor plate. And Rinoa is a 17 year old girl. Her top was raised because of the cleavage that was featured for an under age girl.

When I was a boy I thought Siren wore nothing below the waist and what you saw was body hair, because it's the same color as her hair. So I get why they would censor her, even though I don't like it.

Priinciply I’m put off by it, but I have more issues with the controls not in sync and vibration function missing from the PS4 and probably the other console versions as well. Censorship has been an issue in FF since the dancers weren’t able to take off their dresses in SNES FFII like they could in the Super Famicom version of FFIV back in 1991.
On the topic of censorship as a whole, there are questions I believe must be asked:
What type of Censorship is it?
For what reason is it Censored?/who is the Censorship for?
Was the item Censored actually harmful?
Does the Censorship cause more harm then good?
If they went in the other direction, would I be fine with it?
Too many times, I’ve seen people react immediately against the Censorship without stopping to consider the reasoning of it and whether or not it’s actually causing any harm that I feel it’s less about what the actual Censorship to them and about what it would mean for them to accept the Censorship.
