  • In conversation with Charles Currie, Robert retraces his early life on Arran, his apprenticeship as a stonemason with John Thomson, and the rise and rise of his family business in Canada. He is rightly proud of recruiting and training hundreds of apprentices, many of them women. While a serving police officer, he was armed, but not very dangerous. During his engaging interview, Robert treats us to some of his music and singing.

What a quick, entertaining hour told in such an easy relaxed style. Loved hearing about this Brodick boy who made good in Canada but still retains his love for Arran. Your father gave me a copy of Homeland, Robert, which I love listening to. Well done and all the best.

I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful interview Bobby - your generosity of spirit, passion for your craft and your love for Arran shone through. Great to see the 'Gathering of Stones' featured and to hear your beautiful rendition of 'The Whispering Stones'. I appreciate the quick mention myself and Nick. 👏

I'm thoroughly enjoying this wonderful series and learning so much about Arran. This episode in particular because I live in Toronto and have worked frequently at the Vaughn Estate as a musician. Beautiful song Robert! My great grandfather was Norman MacLeod Wright who was minister at Kilmory Parish. I am coming to visit my great aunt in Glasgow this April and hope I will have a chance to visit Arran and see the manse house my grandfather told me about. This will be my first trip to Scotland.
