Okay, it's beyond awesome that a six-year-old living in the 21st century picked out an NES game when she could have had anything and went on to love the game. It goes to show that good retro games are timeless.

Guerrilla War is really cool. Yeah, you can easily credit feed it, but it's nice that you can also challenge yourself to credit limits as well. I have the arcade pcb of it as well that I sometimes swap into my Time Soldiers cabinet (it also used the rotart joysticks). The arcade version is pretty brutal in its difficulty. The fact that it only gives you 8 directions to shoot with the rotary sticks makes it feel like you never have just the right angle to hit your enemies without them hitting you first. Some games, like Time Soldiers, give you 12 positions, making it simpler to find a good shooting angle... then again, none of that has anything to do with the video.
Kickle Cubicle is great as well. This was a good list that my kids would also corroborate!

Radia Senki needs a translation patch, but it's a relatively simple Action RPG similar to Secret of Mana (except you have a 5 person party instead of 3). Extremely little grinding for an NES RPG, frequent save points in dungeons that fully heal you, and did I mention the great music and story? A fun 10-15 or so hour adventure.

The easiest NES games I can remember playing off the top of my head were Marble Madness (WAY easier with the d-pad than the arcade’s trackball), Adventures in the Magic Kingdom (I beat this one on a game store’s demo machine back in the day lol), Monopoly (once you figured out how the AI worked it was pretty easy to manipulate), Wrecking Crew (still one of my favorites in the black box set; the fact that you can jump to any level at any time is a big plus in making it more manageable), Tetris (good pick), and DuckTales.
I’m also gonna side with the other commenters who’d put SMB3 over SMB1. SMB3’s item reserve feature, P-wings, tighter jump physics, and generous extra lives made it the much easier game to beat, IMO.

Kickle Cubicle is one of my all time favorite games for the NES (or any other platform.) While it may start out easy; the difficulty definitely ramps up in the later levels. Some of the bonus levels are downright brutal. No surprise they included a self destuct like in Lolo games in case you get stuck. Great game. It bled me of $90 for a loose copy; but it was worth it. a few more: Monster in my Pocket, the ONLY Batman game I finished (there was a sprite swap called Batman & Flash), the OTHER Turtle games, 2 & 3 are easy beatemups! Panic Restaurant, I don't think I got to the end but it's surprisingly accessible later NES platformer... honorable mention: Contra and Super Contra WITH 30 LIVES CODE/HACK. We had that version on Famicom multicarts but you need to input code on downgraded NES version. It's not an easy game but with so many lives and continues it's doable for everyone. And fun.
Other games I played as a kid where I couldn't beat anything at all and spent a lot of time in level editors are Lode Runner, Excitebike and Tank/Battle City, they're not that hard, but even if you can't play them normally, making custom levels where you can't lose is literally an option, anyone put armor all over your "home" eagle in tanks? Or Loder Runner stage where you just casually walked where you wanted? It's kind of amazing we had more games with level edit in 8-bit era than later, where consoles had more than half a byte of RAM.

Nintendo really watered down the difficulty by adding running to the game, and making it so you only beat the game once. In Japan (on the original Yume Kojo Doki Doki Panic), you have to beat the game with all 4 characters.

  • @TesseractUnfolded

Gotta personally disagree on SMB being the easiest of the original three games. I beat SMB3 the first day I had it, but to this day haven't finished SMB. Biggest issue is 8-4 where you have to figure out the 'correct path' through the castle. There's BS like that on SMB3, but you can warp past World 7.

This is actually a really awesome and smart list. The NES is just notorious for some of the hardest video games ever made. I agree that Super Mario Bros is an easy game. In fact the vast majority of Mario games are quite easy. They're only hard if you're not familiar with video games in general or if you're not familiar with the genre of said Mario spin-off. But yeah there are some people out there who say that Super Mario Bros is hard but it really isn't.
The only Mario games I find hard are the lost levels and too many of the custom levels in Super Mario Maker 1 especially and yeah definitely some of them in Super Mario Maker 2 as well. Some of the Mario spin-offs are pretty hard but most of them not so much.
It's cool to see that Mega Man 6 is considered an easy NES game. I grew up in the '90s and loved playing SNES, N64, PS1, and Genesis growing up but I never actually played a Mega Man game until way later. First time was with Mega Man 1 which I downloaded to the Wii virtual console and that game is brutal. I later played some Mega Man games on Mega Man collection on 3DS and I started playing the First four games but found them all to be so difficult Although I do think I noticed it being a little morgue forgiving and generous Although I do think I noticed it being a little more forgiving in the later games but I never got around to playing Mega Man 5 and 6 on there. I actually haven't played my 2DS in years since I have a switch now but hey they added all six of the Mega Man games on the NES catalog so perhaps all finally get five and six a try

    • @Fortefyre
      @Fortefyre  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

5 is where it started going downhill for me, and you can tell they were grabbing for straws to anticipate the next gen era, 6 is....it's easy, and I like that, but it's also the lame duck to me. Even Capcom didn't want to release it in America, but Nintendo pushed them to.

@@Fortefyre I might have reacted to Mega Man the same way that you have if I had ever gotten around to playing it back when I was a kid in the '90s. The fact that even though there were so many Mega Man games back then and somehow I never played a single one of them until decades later probably has contributed to how well bad I am at the games When I'm actually somebody who's really good at video games but I'm not very good at the Mega Man games, and I guess how discouraged I can feel playing the older ones.

But SMB for the arcade is brutal. It starts with the level 3-2 slightly different than the one for home consoles. It gets slightly more difficult and it culminates on level 6-3. If you can conquer that level within 10 lives or less, I want to see it.

The only place I was able to play that version of SMB was at a lonely theater or in this bowling alley on Friday nights. Why Friday nights? It was because my parents liked to bowl there for 3 years. I remember the younger kids saying "oh great, it's that kid that plays forever" sarcastically 😁
I would usually start off my playing sessions with a few loyal supporters. Lose everybody by the time I get to world 5-1. And have everyone plus some new people by the time I get to world 8-1 thru 8-4. Then when you beat the game you get to start all over with a harder difficulty 😠
Needless to say when I reached that point I was so hungry and thirsty after an hour of playing I would let my quarter be taken over. It was funny to watch because many of the kids who were there had never seen the "end" screen only for there to be more of the same but with buzzy beetles. It was funny watching those kids armed with about 30 free Marios trying to play against those buzzy beetles. 😂 I doubt they even made it past the second stage.

Gave your daughter $40 and went to the expensive cabinet and chose little mermaid. You may have rewarded your daughter for good behavior, but you should have punished yourself for foolish behavior.
Little mermaid is always in the bargain shelf for $10.

Ikari Warriors 3 was very easy. Beat it in an hour when I was 10. That was many moons ago.

yikes!! most casuals will no way be completing cobra triangle. Good list for the most part though, id also say megaman 2 is the easiest one ( which is why ppl love it ) Heavy barrel is pretty easy and also duck tales. Nice video man

Good list! I've only played maybe half the games on this list but, yeah, many of these games have a manageable difficulty for any skill level. Another game I'd give honorable mention to would be Kung-Fu. Once you get the hang of it, it is pretty quick game to charge through.

I figure Super Mario Bros 3 is easier since as long as you keep the system on, you basically have unlimited continues and even then that's a non-issue with the All-Stars remake and GBA remaster. Not to mention having very responsive jumps compared to SMB1.
As for Kirby's Adventure; Meta Knight and Nightmare phase 1 are surprisingly nasty for main Kirby content bosses. Especially when you compare the former to his Nightmare in Dream Land counterpart who's so easy in comparison. As for Nightmare phase 1, the window of time to defeat him before colliding with the ground is rather tight. It feels like they gave players more time to work with in Nightmare in Dream Land.

But a continue in SMB3 means you have to start the world you were in from the beginning, with only five lives. Still pretty difficult.

Funny man NateTheGnat! Let's see a walk through of you beating that awful game. I'd love to watch that. I don't believe there's a video on TH-cam of the ending.

I agree with you on everything but 1 entry. And maybe some honorable mentions for "fun" trumping "beatable"
Mario3 is a great game, that I beat with relatively few moments of "this is way to hard" and most all of those happen in the last 2 worlds. Mario is also great, but after world5 the timer becomes the biggest obstacle and that's not taking into account the Final Castle Maze and Bowser never being something I'd call "easy". Mario3 is also better looking and alternates players unlike the original.
I would have said Bubble Bobble and Snake Rattle and Roll are better options than Cobra Triangle and honestly I think Mega Man 4 or 5 was the "easiest" of the series. 4 having more pronounced Boss Weakness and completely optional "extras" that were not even something I realized I missed whereas 5 introduced Beat (also in 6) but it was not intuitive where all the letters are, or how to even snag a couple of them.

Karate Kid is VERY easy and can be finished in 7 or so minutes. Contra is easy with the 30 man code. Super Mario 2 is easier to me than the first game. Kung Fu is mostly easy except for maybe a small problem with the fourth floor boss and a few others.

I've never played the NES version of Kung-Fu, but I do know all about it!
