Oh man Kyle, this is SO helpful! I love Milanote and use it to plan my trips and videos, but i'm planning a roadtrip (never really planned one before) and love the way you use street view to plan your locations! BRILLIANT!
As a Brit who now lives in Canada, i find this super interesting. I do a lot of multi-day photographic trips on the Alberta and Saskatchewan prairies and nearly always organized by pen. This app looks amazing and well thought out. It would also work for my bikepacking trips as well. My mum is near Reading and so is my sister. Small world. Great videos.
Holy heck thank you so much Kyle, you have helped me restructure and plan any future trip by sharing Milanote. I've been using the notes application and marking places down with stars and flags for years on google maps, but this is a far better way to structure a project or trip. I am so happy to be able to use this for future trips and projects!
Looks like something I can't do without, just planning a trip to Northumberland, interested to see if it can be dynamically linked to tide table websites, weather websites, clear outside and photopills plans . Will give it a try, really like that images can be added as story boards. Will probably have 20+ locations to shoot and this has the potential to really improve on the simple spreadsheet approach
Im a simple man, I see Kyle McDougall's posted a new vid, I hit like. More seriously though I didnt even know I needed something like this. Excited to plan my trip to Japer on this!
Thank you for this tutorial... I've always struggled with conceiving projects on paper as it's always felt disheveled and I end uup not getting anything started. This is a massive resource for the travel documentary photo work I've been trying to get going.
Thanks Kyle, great ideas here. This is a great way to balance out going on an "unknown adventure" with planned ideas to bank at least a few photos. Too often I've gone on road trips and come away with very little because of poor prior planning or forgetting to bring some piece of gear. Not sure if you've done a video on your car camping set-up, but I'm always interested in how other's set-up their vehicle for overnighting and deciding where to overnight, particularly in areas without national parks and such. Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed! My car camping is definitely not glamorous, lol. Usually just the front seat cranked back with a sleeping bag. Hoping to pick up a camper van in the near future.
Hi Kyle, another really good vid as usual. Being a keen photographer (amateur) I have been watching your vid's for a long time now and enjoy them and your photography immensely, but never, ever did I think I would see Southend on the Mull of Kintyre mentioned in one of them. My father and his half of our family are from Campbeltown and my grandmother used to live at Stewarton which is on the main road between Campbeltown and Southend. If you have time when you are there you might try visiting the Carradale area as I am sure you will find something of interest pictorially. Aside from that I believe Carradale beach is where part of the filming for Paul McCartney's 1977 hit 'Mull of Kintyre,' which featured the Campbeltown Pipe Band was filmed. It spent 9 weeks at number one in the UK charts and I believe for many years was the biggest selling single of all time. It is a beautiful part of the country but if you intend to visit in the winter months I am not sure that is the wisest decision. We used to go there a lot when I was young for our annual holiday and even now I can recall relatives saying "if only you had come up last week, the weather was beautiful"...........and that was in July/August!!! I haven't been there for many years now but your vid did bring back memories. Enjoy and it will be interesting to see any vid you might make of your trip.
Hey Ian, funny enough, you're the second person to tell me about a family connection with this area. I had another photographer reach out through email. What a coincidence, especially as this just came from some Google mapping 🙂 I'll definitely look up the Carradale area. And yeah, I hear you about the winter. I know the weather it probably dicey. I find though, sometimes that's when you experience the best 'moments'... or, it could just rain for five days straight, haha. Fingers crossed!
This seems perfect for me. Want to do more photography roadtrips this year around Alberta, but with a bit more purpose and productivity to justify the fuel costs! 😂
There's only very limited google streetview coverage in Germany due to data protection laws so that makes it difficult to use google maps to get an idea of a place, and pictures of those places aren't always good or readily available :/
@@KyleMcDougall Sadly not, because of the data protection laws image databases are scarce, hard to come by and just don't always have what you're looking for.
I am planning another road trip to New Mexico this coming May. Last year was my first time there and from Wa State it is a long drive. This Drive I know a few places i hit last trip and want to spend more time at. I want shoot some color film along with my usual B&W. Other than that I am a rolling stone :)
Wow really interesting, total opposite of how I prefer to do trips. Accomodation is my only constant, when not car camping. Other than that I find the discovery of pictures onc of the main rewards of the trip (other than the picture obviously). I much prefer the impulsive, impromptu, improvisational methodology, makes it feel more, I don't know, adventurous I suppose. Cheers 👍
That's how I've often done it, but more and more I find that I wind up wasting my sunrise and sunset hours in places where I can't find an interesting scene. I'm starting to plan my trips more with a major destination in mind, but knowing that if I spot something better I can always change my plans.
Very useful video! Never imagined you so organized... :) I am using Evernote and plan in a similar way but apparently Milanote is way cooler and more visual (reminds me of OneNote from Microsoft...) I think the keynote for me from this video is to get motivated again and start road tripping again and shoot some more... Thanks! 🙏😎
Helps when you live in such a picturesque area! I live in Miami, so i need to do more road trips for my photography. I enjoy landscapes like yours which is really hard to do in such a densely populated area. Great video!
Kind of ironic this video comes out just as COVID is making a strong resurgence to the point that even travel inside the UK could (I say could not would or will) suddenly get restricted. I hope your able to do your Scotland trip but I'd be ready for the Scottish to suddenly restrict travel into Scotland from England & Wales like they did before earlier in the year.
The most important part of photography that never gets mentioned is planning, incredibly useful video, thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome. Cheers.
@@KyleMcDougall I got a chance to play around with this software and it's super helpful, thanks for introducing us to it!
Although sometimes, *that* becomes the sole cause of burnout. Double edged sword!
Great video. Really liked the way you go through all the processes!!

Cheers! Yeah, Milanote has been such a helpful tool for this kind of stuff. Way more organized! And small world, indeed. 🙂
I lived in the Orkney islands for 2 years as a kid on a remote farm outside Stromness. You could see scarpa flow at low tide.
This is super helpful. Thank you for sharing this great planning framework.
You’re welcome. Cheers!
This is so useful, as usual

Super helpful, I think it's a perfect activity for a slow rainy day. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

I have long wondered how you find/research prepare for trips. Saving this for forever!

Did the roof on Rua Reidh Lighthouse about 25 years ago.
Hi Kyle, brilliant video! Might have to steal this for organising a bike packing tour. Loving your videos🙌🏿
I was just thinking the same. bikepacking trip planning for sure...

Great information, not just for photographers
That was very helpful. I will for sure try out this app and use it to prepare for future phototrips at home (Iceland) and abroad.
Enjoy!
I’m looking to do a solo trip in the fall of 2022 around Scotland. I’m excited to see what you get 📸

super useful. thanks

That software seem like such a great way to organise or even just to mood board ideas for projects. I just need to find a project to do.
Definitely a good one for mood boarding as well.
The Orkney Islands will not disappoint!
Looking forward to it!
Great logic and planning. Thank you
Why not setup the same system for free in Google slides? Am I missing something? Thanks
You should visit Rum island off the west coast of Scotland!!
Was just talking with someone about that place recently. :)

Very helpful - thanks. I hadn’t even realised it was possible to drag the route on the map to compare time for alternative routes!! :- )

For sure. I get that. As mentioned in the vid, I like to loosely plan, and leave room for discovery along the way. 🙂

This is an amazing tool, thank you very much for sharing, even though you might be paid to do so..
This will make life easier arranging shoots
Doesn't have google street view in the country. 😭
I noticed Pwll Du on your Wales board.. Pwll Du bay on the Gower? Grew up there, know it so well. :)

There’s definitely a lot of great stuff in Florida if you drive and explore. Spent a couple months there in 2018.
might be too personal, but why did you move to England?
My wife is from here. Moved to be closer to her family.
