- Gino Bechi (1913-1993)
Although Gino Bechi and Tito Gobbi were exact contemporaries, the former seems somehow to belong to a more distant era (at least to me). Perhaps this is because Bechi's career was waning by the mid-1950's, when his voice started to lose some of its color and freshness. He also appeared very few times in the U.S. and, to my knowledge, never at the MET.
If Gobbi was a more persuasive actor, Bechi certainly had the richer, more powerful and secure voice. In his prime, Bechi was often referred to as the "new" Titta Ruffo, both for the similarity in voice (the richly-textured, "snarling" timbre and blazing high notes) and for the repertoire they sang.
Here we have an RAI video of 'Eri tu', from Verdi's "Un Ballo in Maschera". While it comes from the latter part of Bechi's career, the clip- dubbed to a late 1940's recording- finds him in fine mettle, and his rousing rendition serves as an interesting contrast to the slightly more subdued 1943 version of the aria already posted on TH-cam.
If Bechi was around today he would be a huge star. What a magnificent voice.
Bechi was great...a true baritone with wonderful technique. His Gerard is perfect.
Superbly sung, with elegance and distinction .Very contained ,deeply expressive and aristocratic .what a secure and reliable technique! A lesson to those who would ',out Herod Herod in this aria.
Grande meraviglioso artista. Bellissima voce... grande tecnica...One of the best in this role.
fantastic Baritono Gino Bechi
Leonard Warren))

UN DES PLUS GRANDS BARYTONS DE TOUS LES TEMPS... GRAZIE MAESTRO
Magnificent! What a thundering voice.
Ils sont ou ces grands. ? Ceux d'aujourd'hui peuvent tous aller se faire voir. C'est extraordinaire.
This is what the Italians call "squillo colla voce bene appoggiata"...a lost art, the only way to fill an opera house without microphone.
This is simply amazing. Such an ideal placement from bottom to the top.
Can I quote you
Grandissimo
Grande👏👏👏❤
Voce bellissima...
Thr Greasaaat Gino Bechi. Never heard of him . Why is he great ? He is great because of his airplane video
Famous Andrea Chenier of 1946 recording with Beniamino Gigli and Maria Caniglia also features Gino Bechi as Gerard.
Exquisito.
SUPERB
un dios... top1 de baritons
Tremendo!
I wonder why when we mention famous Italian past baritones, only names of Gobbi, Bastianini or Taddei always prevail in media, while nobody says anything about Gino Bechi?
Amazing !! I didn't knew him before...wow !!! Thank you very much !
A true Italian LEONE - where have they disappeared to??? Ruffo, then Stracciari, then Bechi then....????
There were others. You forget Bastianini.
Then Bastianini.

Alzati; là tuo figlio
A te concedo riveder. Nell'ombra
E nel silenzio, là,
Il tuo rossore e l'onta mia nascondi.
Non è su lei, nel suo
Fragile petto che colpir degg'io.
Altro, ben altro sangue a terger dèssi
L'offesa! …
Il sangue tuo!
E lo trarrà il pugnale
Dallo sleal tuo core,
Delle lagrime mie vendicator!
Eri tu che macchiavi quell'anima,
La delzia dell'anima mia;

O dolcezze perdute, o speranze d'amor!
Grazie!
Baritones just don't sing like this anymore. No idea why, but it becomes nostalgic :(
quite agree!
Not only baritones. Today operatic singers use a different technique from the greats of the 20th century (and probably also before), which is much less efficient and gives to the voice a less beautiful sound. Unfortunately it's a craft that has been lost. I hope we can recover it.
Thank you for posting Bechi in his prime voice, even if the picture quality is really horrendous. I prefer Gobbi for the dramatic side of his interpretation, but concede that Bechi, not to mention Bastianini,Ruffo, etc, had more full and "splendorous" voices. And Bechi retired and lived many years in Lisbon,my hometown, which renders him closer to the portuguese public.
Totally agree on the similarity with Titta Ruffo. Also same range, Ruffo too never managed the low A. But doesn't matter, great artist!!!
+TheReizzTeam. There is at list one record where Becchi sings a low A: as Amonasro, in "Aída" with, Caniglia Gigli,Stignani, Pasero, Tajo and directed by Tulio Serafini. (July, 1946). However, it is true that it was very difficult for him to reach this note.
yes, very similar voice and technique to Ruffo. Both in my opinion the greatest baritones of all time.
Marvellous stuff, surely the equal of Bastianini. A real discovery for me, I love the power and musicality of this voice
In my opinion Bastianini is a discount version of Bechi:)Still a great singer tho.
Would have been wonderful to see and hear Titta Ruffo, perhaps the greatest baritone of the 20th century
Bechi is a better than Bastianini. Although Bastianini is great too.

One of the best!!! To me the best after Titta Ruffo.
its technically perfect,
but the acting T_T;;
Webarton He starred in about 20 movies. I think he knew something about acting!

One of the last masters of lost bel canto art, who really sang in the masque. His singing is so moving and disturbing to me.
This is certainly dubbed.
The energy in the singing doesn´t appear at all in the action. He don´t even try. Seems a bit sad.
"O dolcezze perdute o memorie"
But how glorious he was in his prime!
Non mi piace
I can't stand the way his voice quivers constantly. I know this was popular in Italy but as with Corelli it has to stop at some point.
aforwood1 The only quiver is the squillo in his voice which was a nightmare for the sound engineers and people like you who don't like MASSIVE VOICES.
It's not his voice, it's the recording.
He is probably the best technical baritone of them all. And Corelli is arguably the best tenor. Learn about singing
Bechi is in top 5 baritones in history of opera no doubt. Maybe even top 3 if we compare dramatic baritones.
