Soft Launch = EA looking for ways to fire all their QA people and have players do it for free, or better, negative income since the players have to BUY the game first, THEN playtest it!
"Live service" doesn't need improvement. It just needs to die. That term is about milking players for as long as is possible. The best of "live service" doesn't even come close to the best of single player, multiplayer or MMO games. Live service is simply a business model being pushed onto us.
EA's new business model: "We're going to crowd-source funding, design, and QA through tiered closed alphas and betas." I've got bad news - earlier small-scale access to Anthem would have drawn attention sooner to how flawed it was, but it wouldn't have fixed it. Public release is great for identifying bugs or areas in need of polish, but it'll never be enough to fix a broken foundation. Creating a good game is the job of the developer, not the audience, and this "new direction" smacks of expecting to outsource your own job to your _customer._ "Rather than have to come up with good ideas ourselves, we're going to give you some half baked ones for cheap, then you tell us what we need to do to get it to a point where we can sell it for full price." Good luck with that.
8bitArtist I’m an older gamer and a lot of these company’s are just making live services at the detriment of single player experiences. I want more diversity and AAA single player or co op with a focus on a cohesive story.
Aethere_ Nocturna Why are you staying the obvious, you think I ain’t done that,The lack of new single player experiences is the issue. You don’t know how many games I have completed, over the 25 years of gaming I’ve noticed the reduced amount of quality single player. I do mostly enjoy indie these days. I’m looking forward to Rage 2.
I really don't want AAA publishers doing paid Early Access BS. These companies just need to have new alpha and beta testing sessions for the general public. Too many publishers are giving streamers the ability to get into alphas and betas strictly for the hype building factor and not actual feedback on the game. They were/are more worried about getting those Day 1 dollars than putting out a solid product that will be playable for months. Most of these publishers have their own "insiders" program and should put them to use.
Yeah, no. This means they're going to do even more staggered releases and put out even more broken products for the same price. They're going to sell games when they're even earlier in development so that they have lower capital invested when players buy in or not. Also on Overwatch the reason why only a small community had it was because internal to Blizzard the coders that worked on Titan wanted to test characters and the tester outlived the actual Titan project. It spread because inside the studio people were already sharing it with their friends and family because they didn't have much riding on it failing. It was already a dead game.
So they literally want actual beta testers to pay for the privilege for 18 months. A soft launch is clearly a beta test. Games did this all the time in the 90s, for free. Even 5 bucks is too much.
As someone who works in QA at a small videogame company, I can assuredly say that the early access model won't work for large, live service style games at AAA companies. It's only going to lead to the bigger companies releasing unfinished, broken games and pinning them as "early access". Also, they're going to charge full price on "release", do you really think EA would not try and milk gamers for every penny?

Days Gone, The Division 2 both released on us big open world games. One is service base game n another is pure open world survival. Both of this games r big in scale. Visually both game is stunning. It's the opposite of how Bioware has been acting. If anyone's a 4X fan, their games are worth taking a look at
Of course it's because was 'too big' just like BF V failed at lunch because "there wasn't Battleroyale and 'focus' on the singleplayer" Not like both games came out incomplete, and that Anthem was literally unplayable and was just a "loading screen: the videogame" , or that basically the bosses were doing who knows, for basically 6 years, what instead directing the game? Heck I have seen bigger games. Monster Hunter 3 had more zones/content and run smoother back on the wii. At least they didn't blame the "lack of Battleroyale" PD: soft launches? I thought -Demos- "betas" were already soft launches
Soft launches still happen but they are now launched to everyone and monetized as full releases. Over the following 18 months they become the game they were meant to be, OR, they get shelved shortly after the allotted funding runs out. I personally don't think that Anthem will be allotted more funding if Andromeda was cut off so quickly.
I think the term is awkward too, but elder game was an industry term that was used to take the "end" out of "endgame" but still refer to later gameplay, especially for Games as a (gag) Service. The idea is both start with an 'E' so you know what they mean while reminding people "This is the Game that will never end (charging too much money)" so investors and the press get the point that this game doesn't have an end point. What was wrong with the term "later"?... who knows?
Soft launch- Full game with a select audience but still sell at full price to work out bugs. Beta-Incomplete game we need to fix and can't sell at full price so we allow a select few to play. Which will they label it as? Buying at release is a joke. You don't buy the car with the promise the seats will be in 6 months. Or the engine dying randomly will be looked into and fixed while any issue with spending money on more gas will be taken care of immediately.
I gave you another reason: I had to leave he battle and see two loading screens to switch my guns and abilities. And then two loading screens to restart the mission I just left. And I have premier access so deleted it without any remorse.
6:11 EA is like an emotionally abusive hot ex. They say, hey baby I’ve changed. And you want to believe them but you KNOW they probably haven’t changed.

Of course it's because was 'too big' just like BF V failed at lunch because "there wasn't Battleroyale and 'focus' on the singleplayer"
Not like both games came out incomplete, and that Anthem was literally unplayable and was just a "loading screen: the videogame" , or that basically the bosses were doing who knows, for basically 6 years, what instead directing the game?
Heck I have seen bigger games. Monster Hunter 3 had more zones/content and run smoother back on the wii. At least they didn't blame the "lack of Battleroyale"
PD: soft launches? I thought -Demos- "betas" were already soft launches
Love the video. The jokes are really laughable! Except for EA failure of course.
EA's game design by spreadsheets is laughable
Soft launches still happen but they are now launched to everyone and monetized as full releases. Over the following 18 months they become the game they were meant to be, OR, they get shelved shortly after the allotted funding runs out. I personally don't think that Anthem will be allotted more funding if Andromeda was cut off so quickly.
I have 2361 hours played in Warframe... hmmmm... I wonder why...
What was wrong with the term "later"?... who knows?
EA, the game is not in the game
"We are going from presentation mode to conversation mode" then what the hell are the Anthem Twitter page, community forums and reddit for?!
Anthem is the funniest game ever. And I didn't even play it.
Purchased Legion of Dawn Edition for $34. Glorified Ironman simulator. Not bad.
Publishers: "It's hard to make a live-service game."
Gamers: "No one asked for the live-service 💩💩💩 business model!"
That dog's face at 5.14 made me spit my coffee out. hahahaha
Nicely done chaps. The VB theme just perfectly tops off the video. Touché gentlemen touché.
It's really sad anthem should be the one and take the title of game of the year it look good it sounds good but everything else is broken. Well at least we have days gone.
Most movies have test screenings before they are officially released
There used to be a time when the people making games were gamers themselves. Developers would QA their own stuff. Old Blizzard comes to mind, it started as a bunch of nerds working out of a garage and if they felt their game sucked, it didn't release until it was "ready".
Gold ol' times...
QA was going to test it, but they couldn't get past the loading screens.
Wow, that's the same reason I got bad grades on my essays... they were always so perfect that the teachers couldn't comprehend them!
There was nothing placed more perfect in the annals of history... then the jurrasic park meme.
Omg dude. I lol'd so hard when you pulled Anthem out of the pile of dinosaur shit that I upset people at work. Masterfully done.
Hello Andy Wilson,
The trouble with the launch and release of Anthem was due to your studio not putting in work.
My advice is to look inwards why your studio wasted millions of dollars.
