- Watch as I show you around my off the grid homestead in the Canadian wilderness. I show all of my buildings that I have at my camp including; my cabin. workshop and chicken coop. Everything at my camp is powered by solar electricity and heated with wood stoves. My homestead was relatively inexpensive to build and provides me with a low cost of living with no monthly expenses. I hope you enjoy the tour of my homestead and can take something from it.

When you said you went off into the woods at 17 to build yourself a home; I felt both pride and a huge maternal instinct of love. Why is a 17-year-old going off into the woods alone to build a home? I can tell from just stumbling across your channel, looking at if it's even possible to still homestead in Canada, that you are an amazing, inventive, and wonderful young man. As a mother, I would have died of worry if you had left to run away to the woods so young. But look at you! Look what you've done! Amazing. Anytime you want a Grama to adopt you, just let me know... you're amazing, and so mature for your age!

You should build a lean to off both sides of the cabin for additional dry storage/porch area., etc. Outdoor shower and kitchen. Garage/parking/shop. Firewood storage. The lean to on each side has endless possibilities. Just set a few post and stringer on each side and put a roof over it. Easy

Your cabin and shop are very nicely done and way more organized than most guys your age would accomplish. I am a trapper in Arctic Alaska about 30 miles above the Arctic Circle. I will turn 71 in a couple weeks so have gone through most of the situations you will experience in a few decades. My mom would have raged considerably if I had lived in the bush like this. One wins some and loses some and she died when I was 18 so it never came up :D.

I live a lot further South (Arkansas) and we have wood stoves because they're fun ways to get rid of storm damage and if you get snowed in every once in a while it's nice to not rely on gas furnaces when the generators run out of fuel during a power outage. it is nice for keeping pipes from freezing when you aren't home though, just turn the thermostat up a little and open all the plumbing-containing cabinets, on exterior wall plumbing run it it a slow continuous stream until it's not near record cold again. or if you're leaving for a while cut off the water at the street and then drain everything with the help of an air compressor and cleanout valves.
I'm from Arkansas also and we rely on the fireplace a lot. Only thing that has saved us several times over the years.
