I wanna make breakcore... someday... I finally know the music theory behind it and that's more prepared than I need to be. I have reaper, I have a few workable samples, I just need the willpower to fumble through reaper for the first time.
word of advice for you (or anyone reading this who wants to make music): - Compare yourself only to yourself. Never compare your work to anyone else's EVER. Even outside of the beginning stages even when you are well established don't compare yourself. Eventually this will become second nature and you won't feel the need to do it anymore. - Listen to as much as possible. Not only in the genre you want to make but outside of it. If you are interested in digital music production listen to every possible genre and album you can get your hands on. Analyze the music you like and try to figure out why you like it. Is it the sound design of the synths? The rhythm? Maybe a chord or key change? Take notes on what works and what doesn't - Blast through as many projects as you can, especially when you are beginning. It's more important that you make like 30 different, ~70-second clips than 1 or 2 long songs. - Learn your DAW, mixing, and music theory piecemeal as you make tracks. If you try to learn everything at once nothing will stick and you will waste time and feel incompetent. - Take pride in at least one small thing for each song you make. And I mean small. Like, "hey that little drum fill was unique" or "that was a cool segment of the melody" - Finally make music because its fun for you and for no other reason. If you make music because you want to impress people or want to be like somebody, you will probably give up. That says nothing about you personally, but everything about the mindset. You need to have the correct mindset to be productive in music and get places you never thought you would get. Anyway thats my ramble mostly for myself but maybe you'll find it useful :)
