  • This 70s Gibson SJ Deluxe acoustic had more cracks than a plumber's convention. We will fix the cracks and talk about why they occurred in the first place and we'll have a bit of fun with some neodymium (rare earth) magnets along the way!

    Great vid. Really enjoyed watching the process, especially since I have a 74 Deluxe and have had to make some of the same repairs. Please continue posting new vids!

    12:19 in, put the video on 0.25 speed and watch this part in slo-mo! To do this, click the little gear on the screen and select "speed". :D

      You can also use the "." key to speed up. If the video is paused, you can skip single frames with those same keys.

    Very creative use of the magnets to clamp the wood together, I doubt I would have thought of doing so. I've never seen rare earth magnets that large before, and thought you were just kidding about the strength of them..... Now I'm scared of em too!!

      Damn Brad! It's even more frightening slowed down... All I hear in my head, when watching the video slowed down, is Ralph's Mother from 'A Christmas Story' saying "You'll shoot your eye out" , as I imagine pieces of the magnets chipping off @ 1200 fps!

    @ 17:00 making plywood with the braces I use for obvious reasons, but these cracks also happen from people using heavy gauge strings bowing the body in crazy ways. At the factory they do this so the guitar tunes, but it lifts the action and throw the intonation out of whack so I support that area with a extra bridge or two.

    What strength magnets do you use?

    Ah, rare earth magnets. I watched a video a couple of years ago about building a wind generator with a Volvo front spindle/brake rotor as the hub and Neodymium magnets about an inch in diameter and like a 1/4 inch thick and they had BIG warning about getting your fingers between the mags and any steel plate because they would break the bones in your fingers!! YIKES!!

    Would a re-fret using beefier, higher frets than normal for Gibson buy some clearance to get the bridge saddle back up a little? It wouldn't be a long term fix by any means, but wouldn't it buy some useful time?

    I’m amazed by how quickly you take off the clamps, what’s the dry time for Titebond? I always leave my clamps on overnight or more, guess I don’t need to do that. Did you re-string the guitar after an hour of glueing?

    @ 11:30 glue from the inside of the guitar, wear rubber gloves and press the glue out, clamp the guitar closed, wipe excess off the outside area, let dry overnight...

    With some creative fret work(make all the frets buzz), you could have a sitar! That poor Gibson! I would have thought it was worth more than the cost of repair. Some times you do what you gotta do. Thankz

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, he had just boughtit and paid X amount for it, so between what he'd just given for it and the cost of the needed repairs, it was no longer going to be a bargain. He would have been closer to full retail on it at that point.

    do away with pick guards?

  • @willford8475
    @willford8475 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is it possible to replace the old pickguard to prevent further damage?

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but the risk of me causing damage in the process of removing the PG is high. I think these PGs are glued directly to the unfinished top and then finished over. The edges of the PG have nitro finish that creeps up and over the edge. So I'd have to score the finish and knife off the old PG. That could prove difficult and expensive, and besides, I think the PG has shrunk as much as it's going to already. It's been over 40 years, so...

    • @wingracer1614
      @wingracer1614 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah from the look of that thing, I wouldn't want to take that PG off. It might be the only thing holding the top together at this point.

    Not really sure if the repairs so far, let alone a refret is worth it. As you got it may have been worth $1100/$1200. The work you have done so far has saved it, of a while anyway. Spending another $400-ish will only add $200 to the overall value if that. Set it up for slide?

    No Joke !!!! Neo magnets of that size are Scary ....& letting them clap together can result in them breaking .

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Didn't really mean for that to happen exactly in that way, and it did chip one of them! Guess it made for good TV.

    Those magnets can shatter if they get away from you all of a sudden. By the way...do you know that fret soldering hack? I got a hold of a pretty nice guitar cheap cuz the frets were chewed up. I don't have the tools or the know how to refret, but I tried the solder trick and it came out surprisingly well. Bought me some time anyway

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Solder is so soft, that won't last long. Best to just replace.

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ...and you're right about the magnets shattering. This little exploit actually chipped one of my magnets! Pissed me off.

    • @stevenedwards4470
      @stevenedwards4470 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used the lead free stuff. I don't know if that makes for better durability. I have a nasty guitar jones and I'll need to save up for a non essential upgrade. And I chipped a few myself on my first batch of magnets. I had no idea they could be so powerful xD

    The 70's Gibsons and Martins had a lot of problems. It's probably the reason that Guild Guitars of that period were so popular!

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Guilds are FANTASTIC guitars! They were great from every era. Even Fender couldn't really manage to screw them up.

    If I knew you did acoustics, well......I guess sending a dreadnought acoustic to Kentucky and back would sort of defeat the purpose of a setup.....but I think I need to pull the bridge off my old Takamine and reglue it, because it is visibly popping up at the back when the strings are tuned up. . . . . . now open up and say "aaaahhhhhhh."

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might need a set of bridge cauls to complete that project. I have a set of aluminum ones I might demonstrate soon on a baritone uke with bridge bellying and issues.

    When Guitar Center, Drome Sound, Hermies and various other companies said it was unfixable, they sent these people to me because everything is fixable as you know. Sometimes I settled out for partial labor of love and cash or barter and cash, but it gets done.

    • @wildbillhackett
      @wildbillhackett 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Adam ~ I've never tried stainless steel frets, but I read an issue of Taylor guitar's magazine a few years ago where Bob Taylor talked about trying it on some guitars, and everybody that heard it said there was something odd sounding about the guitars. They changed them to nickel / silver and the odd sound went away, and they never messed with stainless steel frets again. At least that's what he said.

  • @MuscleDad420

    The back probably wasn't lining up with the top because it has shrunken and needs to be humidified.

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That may have been part of it, but it was mostly the hit it took slightly distorted the back. I mostly got it straightened back out, but still a little wonky from the hit. Probably wouldn't notice it unless you were looking for it.

    I've been playing and collecting for a lifetime and for me, I just don't get and understand how people literally beat the shit out of and trash nice instruments. I own guitars that are new to over 65 years old and none of them look as bad as this gibson acoustic. I guess it may speak to the persons personal habits on how they take care of things (house, apartment, car, yard etc) in general. I don't particularly care for the relic'd look anyhow....

      Thanks for the magnet tip, I have never even thought if using strong magnets as clamps. That could've cut my build time way down back when I was building cabinets. Have you see the youtube video where the dude made a "magnetic gauss gun" that shoots little neodymiun slugs? Now, that livestock syringe would've come in handy back in the day.....

      "the Preservation of Favoured Race in the Struggle for Life"
      (removed from the original title of Darwin's book)
      Darwinism played a key role in the rise not only of eugenics, but also euthanasia, infanticide, abortion and racial extermination.

    • @AdamRainStopper
      @AdamRainStopper 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bullshit. Language changes, you could say it *evolves*, over time. "Races" in this context meant *species,* and you creationists have been informed of this many many many times, and instead of switching up your strategy a bit based on new information, you just ignore it, and dishonestly continue to use the same debunked talking-points. As for "Darwinism" playing a role in anything, first, define "Darwinism," and second, you are blaming a dead guy for shit people did using a vast perversion of his work. Very stupid. I am stoned, and even I was able to very easily catch your dishonest attempt at a smear.
