For someone who's notoriously known for making things awkward/uncomfortable in interviews, Joaquin seems to have totally put his guard down by the end of this interview. A true testament to how amazing an interviewer Conan is.
Conan would gladly make a fool of himself if it put his guests at ease. At that point, all they have to do is cut loose, and whatever awkward thing they do, it wouldn't matter.
I wish we had got more interviews with Joaquin on Conan's TBS show. I feel like Conan is one of the few talkshow hosts who know how to interview Joaquin without making him feel uncomfortable.
Conan is an excellent host. Just look at how he listens, gives his full attention to his guests and actually always is interested in them, heck goes along with the guest's ideas/bits.
Just a quick aside: One of my professors at my college was Robert O’Connor, the author who wrote the novel “Buffalo Soldiers”. Very nice, VERY intelligent guy.
Yeah, I agree. I actually watched it for the first time about a year ago and I really enjoyed it. I honestly wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it was.
Lol Joaquin's first comment is straight from the Curb episode when Larry sees his therapist (Bryan Cranston), where he complains about how uncomfortable the chair is.
Conan is scaring me it seems like every time I’m looking at a celebrity he uploads about them and today I was listening to the song Autobahn and then…..
Why is everyone saying this? Just because he has a reserved personality doesn’t mean he’s a nightmare. Just ask the right questions like Conan does. Unless this is a joker reference.
7:12 Conan: “Come on! We can do anything we want! We rule the night!” In a matter of just 4 years, Joaquin Phoenix would be in a movie titled: “We Own the Night”. Pretty cool…
1:01...(disassociates, grabs coffee mug)...again Conan has the brains to ask better questions by at least going a little under the surface, I hope when he gets his HBO show going he uses Cavett as a blueprint
The Autobahn is no race track. It's a highway net of some 14,000 km length all across Germany. It is well maintained. You hardly will find bumps, fox holes or rocks and stones on it because all this is repaired resp. taken away by maintenance staff. It's a big misconception that there are no rules on the Autobahn. It's quite the opposite. You have to know all the rules like keep right, overtake only on the left, the left lane is the fast lane, be aware that there might be always someone out there who doesn't know what he is doing, look into the review mirror every 15 seconds (or keep one eye on it permanently). You need some experience and some driving skills too to go fast on the Autobahn. We Germans are used to it. If you come as a tourist for one day and try to keep with us in the fast lane you are going to be terrified, that's for sure. It's a matter of routine. So don't just rent a fast car and try to be fast on the Autobahn.
Ironic how before Joker kills Robert De niro, Joker killed the late night show host voiced by Conan in Dark Knight Returns. And he didn't kill Conan because he was awful but to get genuine laughs.
I agree about the terrifying nature of it. It is never really thematized, one is just supposd to switch into a mental mode where it's supposed to be okay. (But a lot of life is like that, after all.)
I'm guessing you're referring to driving on the Autobahn? Yeah, it always baffled me how people just accept that speed (and that if you lose control at that speed, death is pretty certain). One of the reasons I haven't driven in 16 years, not long after I got my licence.
of course the german autobahn is not wide open it has speed limits only certain areas you can open it up but then obey speed limits near populated areas
This threw me off because Buffalo Soldiers has a 2001 date in imdb but they’re also discussing Ladder 49 which wasn’t released until 2004. WTH is going on around here???
Autobahn driving must be something you need toput your mind to: Here, in Germany people drive real fast and you need to be aware if it else you may cause a serios or fatal accident. It is the same when driving on the left side of the road, totally different rules.
itw as just terrifying because he dont knewed it how it was haha. but its really safe here and in the land of the car, they are really skilled here in driving on the Autobahn :)
I am German and it's not true, that we drive so fast. We are mostly under 300km/h in rush hour traffic... Only when it free we go over 400km/h...🤷 But 55 mph? We only drive this slow in car parks...
For someone who's notoriously known for making things awkward/uncomfortable in interviews, Joaquin seems to have totally put his guard down by the end of this interview. A true testament to how amazing an interviewer Conan is.
My thoughts exactly! Never seen Joaquin like this in an interview!
Conan is the best at this
This is in 03, he wasnt the way he is now. People change, some get grumpy as they age or just tired of this part of the profession.
Conan would gladly make a fool of himself if it put his guests at ease. At that point, all they have to do is cut loose, and whatever awkward thing they do, it wouldn't matter.
@@SpiceAndSauce true 👍🏻
I wish we had got more interviews with Joaquin on Conan's TBS show. I feel like Conan is one of the few talkshow hosts who know how to interview Joaquin without making him feel uncomfortable.
Letterman could too
It's always better when an interview goes off the rails and not a typical talk show preset interview. This was way more interesting. This was a gem.
I agree, it gives you a chance to see these people as their true selves in such an open and humorous way. No doubt they enjoy it better, too
Of all the talk shows, Conan really understood the art of inserting witt into a conversation without standing in its way
“It’s a gift, don’t question it. Things come to my mind and I ask.” Classic Conan quote
😂 Thank you for posting! Never heard this, love it! ❤
Conan is an excellent host. Just look at how he listens, gives his full attention to his guests and actually always is interested in them, heck goes along with the guest's ideas/bits.
and Conan almost never interrupts or talks over his guests like so many other so-called talk show hosts.
That was pretty funny. I never seen a Joaquin interview. Would never guess he's awkward in other interviews after watching this one.
More people need to know the rest of the Autobahn story - Joaquin crashed his car and was rescued by Werner Herzog 😭😭😭
joaquin phoenix is such a top actor, always think his role in gladiator was his best ever performance
im more of a "her" guy but he was good in gladiator too
Walk the line
The master
walk the line was greatest of his roles so far
Walk the line is his best movie!
Just a quick aside:
One of my professors at my college was Robert O’Connor, the author who wrote the novel “Buffalo Soldiers”.
Very nice, VERY intelligent guy.
Never read it. But the movie was great.
Wow! I love that movie❤ so underrated!
Yeah, I agree. I actually watched it for the first time about a year ago and I really enjoyed it. I honestly wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it was.
I think Conan brings out the best of Joaquin, he is more relaxed in this interview. And Joaquin is pretty sharp in conversation too.
Without question one of the finest actors of the present generation.
River Phoenix was better
Lol Joaquin's first comment is straight from the Curb episode when Larry sees his therapist (Bryan Cranston), where he complains about how uncomfortable the chair is.
Conan is scaring me it seems like every time I’m looking at a celebrity he uploads about them and today I was listening to the song Autobahn and then…..
He IS gifted!
Wir fahren, fahren, fahren auf der Autobahn…
Nah that's just google
How charming does he look omfg ❤
The way Conan gets his guests to loosen up is something else.
He is the most difficult guy to interview. A nightmare for talk show host. Kudos to Conan for not backing off.
Why is everyone saying this? Just because he has a reserved personality doesn’t mean he’s a nightmare. Just ask the right questions like Conan does. Unless this is a joker reference.
for me it seemed like he was drunk that interview
7:12 Conan: “Come on! We can do anything we want! We rule the night!”

It came to Conan's mind, he spoke it, it came true, that's all it is:)
@@alexmapp5444 Fixed. Good call. I don’t know how I ended up being 13 seconds off, but thank you.
The illusory nature of all media predictively programs our subconscious.
Joaquin - "You're awful Conan"
Conan - 😬
The best Joaquin Phoenix interview ever! Conan knows his job.
1:01...(disassociates, grabs coffee mug)...again Conan has the brains to ask better questions by at least going a little under the surface, I hope when he gets his HBO show going he uses Cavett as a blueprint
The chair level change was brilliant
"How about another joke, Conesy?"
Absolutley loved this interview!
The holding the card part was very funny
He has never been so comfortable in an interview....what happened?
I guess you haven't seen the episode of the Robert De Niro's talk show when Joaquin was a guest....
Conan happened.
@@amrita3000 yes!
@@PikseliASMR good one!
@@PikseliASMR haha. Pretty good.
Joaquin had more joy in this period.... loose and not taking himself too serious. What. fun interview... then again Conan is awesome at this.
This the most satisfying Joaquin Phoenix interview that I saw.
before he became a freak
Joaquin should be Guy Montag in a movie based on Fahrenheit 451.
Hahaha the C man with his shenanigans
I'm not sure why "I majored in cowardice" got nothing but crickets.
Joaquin is very attractive in this interview
Sweet young Joaquin
JP deplores interviews, and Conan knew just what to do to save it!
idk why, but Joaqin really sounded intoxicated this night 😂. like the reactions from him and sentences he said.
Some people always try to say that about him, SMH. Gets old quickly.
@@melaniep6964 iam honest. i dont "tried" anything. it was my subjective perception of that behaviour
@@melaniep6964 its not that i want to say smth thats wrong or so. i love joaquin. hes epic. it just felt like. maybe it also was. we dont know
JP has famously said he hates interviews, yet he always interviews very entertainingly
He is one of the greatest actors of all time.
You got that right! So glad to see someone else say it too.
He's not a totally evil guy at all!
The build up to the Autobahn story is one of the funniest things ever!
Only conan knows how to interview joaquin. This clip was great i freakin miss conan's show goddamit
I love how they actively mock the pre interview.
00:16 someone fart? 😂
I heard that too
😂
Joaquin almost fooled me with his fake surprise
This is perfect
Such a handsome guy!
He seems normal here, I would like to see more of him when he is himself.
I guess he's not normal anymore FOR YEARS now
Conan is the best talk show host in my eyes
Migh be one of Conans greatest work

Close your eyes and imagine Jason Bateman... it's uncanny. They have very similar voices.
Yeah sort of
He reminds me of Mcully kulkin a little. Great actor
Joaquin is channelling Larry David

wow it brings back memories to see him sober..

Que genial entrevista 🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼
I wish he would come on Conan's podcast.
