Being Black and Puerto Rican, this really resonated with me. This is my new go to Black Eye Pea recipe. Love it. I'm a smoked turkey fan and it worked perfectly.

Yes! A lot of people underestimate how much flavor smoked turkey will give to their food! So glad you enjoyed it.

👏 👏 👏 👏 Bravo ! My abuela i ( 1903-1983 ) R.I.P. in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 used to cooked black eye peas over rice for good luck the last day of the years . Blessings for reminding me of her. Don't forget the grapes.

I made this morning, used creole seasoning didn't have Adobe, used 2 ham hocks, uncooked, I just reduced heat and cooked longer. Thank you for recipe unbelievable delicious but I made sweet cornbread instead of rice, a southern thing I guess. HAPPY 2024 TO EVERYONE, and to you, chef. Also I used a chicken bullion with tomato, you have to search for it in international aisle. CHEERS

I love black eyed peas I cook up a large batch to have for meals with rice and greens. My neighbor introduced me to them in the 80's and I've cooked them ever since. I look forward to trying your recipe. I did use canned one time and didn't like them that much.
Our family tradition for New Year's Eve is to jump off chairs at midnight. My mother, born in Montana and raised back east as a older child, grew up with that tradition. My brother and I were raised with it to and still do it every New Year's Eve.
It doesn't seem to be German, English or Scottish, Mom's side of the family. I have found that the tradition is Danish, as well as the more popular, breaking crockery on doorsteps at midnight. You will never find me doing that! Ha, ha. Best wishes for New Years Day 2024 and look forward to checking out more of your videos. Thank you!

Oh, I’d be hot if someone broke my crockery 😂🤣😂. I probably would hurt myself jumping off of chairs too!😂🤣

    Hi Marta 😊
I wanted to you wish you a happy new year, and thank you for all your great recipes, and cooking insight. My abuela, rip, left us with no recipes. I think she meant to do that, like a magician that never revealed her secrets.
May you have a remarkable year of good health, and good fortune.

Thank you so much for your kind words. Can I tell you something that, when I discovered it, made me so sad? Often, Abuelas just wanted someone in the kitchen to watch them so they can teach them by sight. I found this to be true with my husband's Abuela. I would be right by her side EVERY time she was cooking, which is how I learned so many of her OLD-old recipes. It's just sad for me to think how many people missed out on being taught by masters themselves because they didn't cook with their Moms or Abuelas. Not saying this was the case for you, but just something I realized.

@@SenseandEdibility Good morning Marta, it is unfortunate, but we have you 😊
I have nothing but wonderful memories of being in abuela's kitchen. I smile every time I think of it. My sister and I would hover at her elbows trying to snitch incredible tasty morsels as she was cooking. I think our cognitive ability to learn anything was impaired when those flavors hit our tongues 😃. Those little bits of pork we pulled out of her party rice were heaven. (Still not sure what part of the pig she used, little bones).
Your pernil was a dead ringer that brought back those wonderful memories. ( I had sent you a video of my girlfriend's first taste of "cracklin"). I also prepared pork for party rice as you described. It was so good we never made the rest of the recipe. I cut the pork a bit larger, garnish, some grated cheese and serve with toothpicks (football season appetizer hit) I'm looking forward to trying some of your dessert, and drink recipes this year.
Last note, abuela was a bit spirited (crazy? lol), and I don't think she ever answered our culinary questions with a straight answer.

Again, you really kick it up a notch!!! Awesome recipe perfect spices to compliment the peas bland flavor. In our home, it was peas for wealth and greens for health. Which didn't make sense because I associated greens with cash. However, the bean counters set me straight. Thank you, and may you have good health and wealth in the New Year.

I picked thru the peas just one time by pouring them on a plate, then putting a small amount in my palm each time, removing debris and broken pieces, putting the good ones in a bowl. Hope this helps.

Wow you guys have similar traditions like black Americans I guess that comes from a little bit of African traditions black Americans are allowed to keep remember how they treated African Americans they were not allowed to keep a lot of their traditions but the Spanish and Portuguese allowed other Africans to keep their traditional like the drums and all that stuff but this is very interesting that's a very southern thing black southern and I say that for a reason cuz white Southerners did not do much cooking and Elton Brown said that himself matter of fact there are parts of the South black people weren't even allowed to buy white beans
