As a painter this vid made me cry . Dude first off step one which was power wash which you did . Second you gotta use a wood brightener and scrub brush to clean the wood . Then sand down the deck with a orbital sander . Then you stain . But stain 3 boards at a time all the way across with a brush and roller .

    • @tedspens

Dude said it look like we burned the deck down 😂😂. The stick broke while rolling, the spray nozzle jumped off and dripped white paint everywhere. You had a terrible week but I'm going through the exact samething. Valspar honey gold look like old mustard once it dried on my new 10x16 yellow pine treated. Used valspar stripper and garden hose nozzle to remove old stain but it didn't budge. I used elbow grease on the entire deck. Scrub brush, steel pot scrubber, sand paper, and water hose. Walked on it and almost injured myself on the slippery ice surface

    1. Sand 2. Deck cleaner using scrub brush and garden hose. 3.Deck brightener 4. Let dry 1-2 days 5. Stain with brush on non sunny day 6. Make sure no rain for 2 days Repeat in 2-4 years.

What deck cleaner and brightener do you suggest. I am having issues getting an old stain and sealer off that peeled up and now have dark areas that I am having issues with. I am using one stripper that turns red to black when I use it and is very gummy once it turns that color. Is it supposed to do that? I have sanded the whole deck and these trouble spots are giving me fits. I have done it twice now on these dark areas and still looks awful. I am using Valspar deck stripper. Would mineral spirits work better? I hear they push/draw the stain out of the wood.

You might want to invest in an angled grinder and a sander. The angled grinder will completely remove any of the old stain and it will remove all the oxidized and bleached wood. After that, sand it down to remove the scratch marks and gouging from the grinder to get a smooth surface.
Clean your deck, get rid of all the dust from the sanding and grinding, there will be a lot of dust, believe me.
Then put 2 very thin coats of stain. Do not use too much or it will blister, crack, and peel off after a year or 2.
Anyway, I highly suggest you grind and sand your deck next time before staining. Otherwise, you'll end up doing it over again in 2 years or less. Also, never apply stain to damp or wet wood. Good luck!

They do make stain stripper and you really should strip, then clean your deck with deck cleaner before you stain to restore the woods ph. Also the final color is going to dramatically change depending on the kind and age of the wood.

Then scrub with a sponge or use ragged over scrapper to remove it, nail polish remover may help if not it's lacquer thinner blend with soapy boiling water, ,those work best

  • @BBradshaw131

The whole deck needs replacing bro. I bet it's just landscaping timbers underneath but your breaks are supposed to be staggered. I would pull all the decking boards up, turn them over, and make sure they all don't break in a straight line. You'll have to cut them but it will be more structurally sound

Go to the Cabot channel here on TH-cam. You will appreciate the short yet informative videos. Your deck wood looks very hungry. You might want to first use a penetrating wood oil. Your deck will soak it up and those cracks will disappear. Penetrating oils are clear or tinted. Then follow up with a sealer a season later. I don't really care for solid stains because I still have to strip and clean and sand every 5 years. Penetrating oil is an application done every year without all that prep work. By the size of your deck, it is comparable to the task of mowing the lawn. Watch those vids on the Cabot channel. Oh and get a pole sander. You only have to sand the wood until you feel the "drag" is gone, not to totally refine the wood. Do make sure your wood is clean. Oxalic acid is a wood bleach and draws out ground-in dirt and tannins from the wood. Yes, then sand. And always READ the label: Application, Clean up, Safety, especially with those oily rags!

You had to use a wood stripper and power wash it after, not just bleach. And for that type of deck (old deck) you are better off with a solid color stain. It looks bad because you applied semi-transparent stain instead of solid color stain.

Pro tip. DO NOT POWER WASH YOUR DECK OR PROJECT! that just makes the wood really rough, and not safe to walk on barefoot. If you have to power wash it at least by a power washer tip that has multiple nozzles so that you can clean the deck eventually, because leaving streaks and lines is going to effect your next stain and those power washer lines are going to show threw especially if your deck has already been stained before or if it just has a lot wear and green on it. Still a good video though, I’m going threw the same problem as you right now. Trying to make my old deck that is very different in stain quality and wood quality

    • @roriasoares4781

OMG .. was going o post something until sorry but i had to laugh with your unfortunate sprayer accident. ... 1- Stain is SUPPOSED to penetrate. you said at 3:10+ "unfortunately the stain soaked in..." ... yes for best results next time dilute your 1st coat 10-15% to allow for stain to BETTER PENETRATE INTO wood. doesn't matter if your finish isn't ideal but you want the stain to penetrate. with a deck as weathered as yours you needed infinitely more stain to be applied on 1st coat vs the very sporadic amount you used. think of min 50-100% more thn what you used. and make sure you do the in between the boards. it should look 100% completely covered but at the edges of each plank it will look darker n wetter because u applied more stain since u would have brushed there and rolled or better yet used a stain applicator ( sheepskin best) and applied with the grain.... then on 2nd coat you don't need to do in between planks but just the entire surface top again direction going with the wood grain and you have a deck that will look good AND last longer cause u protected the wood not just tried to top it. but i gotta give u credit for your hard work

LMFAO! lol.. Ok look! The black color is what they use on luxury real estate. They will also have flat black box planters. You could have just left it. Now after you power washed the black off, and there is still black ghost stains, that would have been fine. When you put the redwood finish over it, it created a patina or acid washed look. That look was actually
really artistic and nice. You should have left it. Now that you spilled white stuff on your deck, i would dab white stuff all over your deck more.. Then power wash it. So you will have even artistic stains. Then go over it with redwood. You will have a unique pattern. Think artistically and outside of the box. Any way you cut it, you have to resand or power wash it every 5 years. Deck finishes imo only last 2-5 years. Have fun with the colors. Don't be so rigid. It's not like these deck finishes will last 20 yers. Deck finishes are like a painted lawn chair you leave outside. The finish won't last many years so who gives a sheit. lol
