  • Over 500,000 people joined us on the National Mall this July for the Apollo 50: Go For the Moon projection show on the Washington Monument. You can now relive this once-in-a-lifetime celebration in full. Go for the Moon captures the excitement of the first Moon landing and tells the story of the iconic Apollo 11 mission from launch to landing and beyond.
"Apollo 50: Go for the Moon" was commissioned by the National Air and Space Museum and produced by 59 Productions. The Museum's Apollo 50 programming was made possible by the support of Boeing with additional support from Raytheon.

I was there a year ago today (7/20/2019) to experience this once in a lifetime celebration. If you are a space nut or especially an Apollo program fan, this was like heaven on Earth. These 20 minutes were of the greatest of 2019 as I look back from a COVID filled world. The sound, video projection, editing, lighting, the whole nine yards was set to perfection. You were glued to the experience and I heard so many people watched it twice. Thank you Smithsonian and all teams for putting this together. Heck, I am sure even Neil was looking down at this and smiling.
I hope we return to the moon soon. God Speed!

Thank you for sharing this. What I found most interesting was the expressions of awe and wonder on the faces of all the people who were obviously not yet born in 1969. I wish I could have been there, but I remember being at the Air & Space Museum for the 10th anniversary, seeing the Apollo 11 astronauts and the first Shuttle crew at a ceremony outside the museum, then watching the landing and moonwalk inside on monitors while eating astronaut ice cream. It was a day I’ll never forget. Now I have to go looking for the photos I took that day!

As beautiful as this multimedia show is - this comment field on youtube is equally wonderful. Instead of snarky comments - people from around the world happily sharing the joy and awe with this demonstration of humanity and science and exploration in its finest moments.
I thank posters for this. Demonstrating that we can still gather and enjoy things together.

The crowd in Washington were treated to an absolutely stunning spectacle. Amazing to see 50 years later all those people of all ages being as hypnotized, mesmerized and sometimes moved to tears as I was back then in 1969 at age 9 and now as well as I am 59. May the United States of America be Eternally Blessed by the Hand of Divine Power for this mind boggling achievement. The greatest of all times. Thank you infinitely the Smithsonian NASM.. Wish I had been there in DC a few weeks ago. I am in tears once again ... Glory to Neil Alden Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Eugene Aldrin and Michael C. Collins forever.

As someone who researched the history of the American space program in graduate school, spending hours and hours at the NASA History Office, the Air & Space Museum Library, and Library of Congress going through seemingly endless boxes of papers, memos, photos, and so on, there is little I have seen about the Apollo program. Yet, watching this video, the sense of awe that I had watching the Apollo launches as child came hurtling back to me.
This was truly an amazing show. The audience of 1/2 million watched as if it were happening live all over again.

Wonderful to see the same emotion in the faces of 2019 Americans, as we who witnessed it a half a century ago.The technological and ideological race with the Soviets quickly became so much more to we who were children at the time. To many, the astronauts became our heroes, role models. And in our minds, we were in the spacecraft, ready for launch......

This is by far, one of the best videos I have ever seen on TH-cam. I was recently home from Viet Nam when the moon landing occurred, and seeing it again 50 years later, was just as inspiring as it was the first time. In spite of how divided our country is today, I am still proud to be an American, and we are still the greatest nation on earth. I would also like to thank Jeff Beal for his beautiful score. Outstanding!

Well, that was just awe-inspiring to watch. I can't imagine what that must have been like to be there in Washington Mall to see that!? Thank you so much for posting this for me to watch on my Christmas Eve, it made it perfect. I always get a little sentimental on Christmas Eve, not because of Apollo 11, but Apollo 8 and my memories connected to that special night. Long story which I'll spare TH-cam of. But it was an awesome event and time full of family loved ones, all huddled around our old Sylvania console TV, for a 10 year old kid to behold. And watching this beautifully made video some 51 Christmas Eve's later, just put the icing on top of that 1968 cake!

Fantastic, thrilling piece of work. The only thing missing, and it was a big omission, in my opinion, was images of those brave astronauts who gave their lives to further the dream of exploration: Gemini: Elliot See and Charlie Bassett; Apollo 1: Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee; Space Shuttle Challenger: Gregory Jarvis
, Christa McAuliffe, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Judith Resnik, Michael J. Smith, and Dick Scobee; Space Shuttle Columbia: Rick D. Husband, William C. McCool, Michael P. Anderson, David M. Brown, Kalpana Chawla, Laurel Clark, and Ilan Ramon.

I am speechless what a great event. I was 4 years old then, I still have vivid memories of that night in Italy with my parents watching on TV something that was to change mankind history. I believed, like many, that was the beginning of a new era not the end. I feel terribly sorry to think that, as of today, 50 years after, we went, not only no further, but that we have even lost the capability to go to the moon. Human Progress is not a given, we must catch up and go back to the moon and further in space, I want see it in my lifetime and leave a better world to my daughter
