Reading all of these comments is making me so emotional, I was raised on 183rd and Washington avenue, (37 now ) and I used to have so much fun at this comic shop, This really really made my day, thank you so much!
I am in the same boat as you. 37 years old now born and raised Bronx and live on the Concourse, Kingbridge to be specific, now living in California. Came here after school with my friends when he used to have arcade cabinets and used love buying his $1 comics. Phil was a character and even though I didn't see his face I knew it was him from his voice. He truly is an OG in the comic game and I would assume the same as well now with the cards. I used to play YuGiOh here with the locals or just chill around to spectate. I remember one the last things I did there was enter in a Magic release event. That's more than ten years ago and it seems like this place is as claustrophobic as ever. The cards are not new for him but its seems he made the smart move for his business and longevity. Honestly you should have talked to Phil more on camera because the man has too many stories he can tell so much about comics.
That was my local store back in the 80's. We would get of of Roosevelt High School and head straight there. Was a cool little store. Tried going back recently but they open too late.
Thank you for confirming that the store was upstairs. I lived here for over 10 years and never been able to find it (I do not go to that area and there is no parking).
I just came across this video because I was telling my wife about the comic book shop called Fordham comics that I used to visit and hang out as a kid, I haven’t been there in sooooooo long but I would definitely like to go and check it out. It seems as Phil the shop owner is still there and watching this video brought back so many memories. It still looks the same as it did back then 😊
BWAH-HA-HA-HA-HA! I'm from the Bronx and my first visit to Fordham Comics was over 30 years ago when I went to pick up New Warriors #1, after discovering #2 on the newsstands. Same owner. Believe it or not, he has made improvements, but it ain't changed much. Gonna stop thru next time I visit NYC. That's a time capsule right there 😂
So this was my LCS growing up spending time with my dad and my grandparents in the Bronx. They used to have an original street fighter machine as well as street fighter two. They also used to have the superman arcade game and I spent a ton of quarters on that. This is the store that I bought my first teenage mutant ninja turtle comic yet as well. I actually got some really early issues from here as well.
Haven't been there in over 30 years. I used to buy my comic books there after school in the early 1980s. Back then it was called C&C Comics. The owners were 2 young white guys and later on I believe they added another co-owner, an Asian guy. They were cool and had their rock music playing in the middle of hip hop land 😂. Good times.
Wow you actually went there nice. I tried to make it my LCS 2 or 3 years ago but the fact that the place is unorganized with no priced marked outside on each of the long and short boxes to indicate new and back issues was just too much for me, bought some $1.00 books but as overwhelming the place was going through all those boxes was enough it'll take months to find what you're looking for on your own to be surprised what you'll find but again not all boxes are marked and not many $1.00 dollar bins as the prices vary depending on what you are looking for. The second time i went back to shop for comics my back and my feet were hurting at the time for standing so much digging and looking through boxes for an hour and some change that i had to leave that's how bad that shop is, just couldn't continue digging any longer. It's sad to see a comic shop like that with no care when it comes to lack of organizing, it discourages me from coming back anymore unfortunately and that can be bad for some customers who may not be able to enjoy shopping there for comics. Nice review.
That why the tables and chairs were there. Just let the man know you are doing some archiving, grab a box and take a seat. You might like organization but the character of this particular comic book store is the excitement of what you might find. If you're cool with him he might put some comics aside for you as well.
