Games back then had a nice color pallete and looked more colorful than many modern games despite its limitations. Retro games werent afraid to try something new and take risks with new IPs and new ideas!
Something I'd love to do would be create a studio and physically re-release old near-forgotten games like "Wild 9" and/or even outright remake them. Beings *extremely* respectful and faithful the original I.P.. Be it the characters, lore, gameplay, and so on. Really something I'd personally love to do someday. There is a lot of fun, goofy, and interesting characters/art/lore of this game that is a dang shame nothing ever got done with it. And if someone beats me to Wild 9 before I ever get/got the chance, there's still PLENTY of others out there, in addition to my own ideas.
Thank you for this one. This was a game my late older brother and I used to play all the time. Glad there’s another video out there about it to keep it alive
I’m sorry for your loss my friend 🌹 Very glad that this video was able to find its way to you, hopefully one day Wild 9 will get the recognition it deserves!
The commercial sold me on this game so much. And while I do love it, what's ironic is that wanting Wild 9 is what led me to discovering my favorite series of all time, Suikoden. PS1 games were in a B1, G1 bargain bin and I had to choose among various games I never heard of to go along w/ Wild 9. So in an odd way I have Wild 9 to thank for that, as well. And yes, the enemy sounds are permanently ingrained in my head, too.
I had the demo of this game on a demo collection. I played it as much as I could, and once I lost my Playstation in 2000, that's the last I've remembered of it. I didn't know the name of the game, details of any kind, other than dropping enemies on spikes, and that grotesque scream they made. Cue the search.
I had that demo disc and played so much of this. I discovered JRPGs around that time though, with Suikoden. I was addicted right away, and proceeded to basically ignore every platformer on the PS1 besides Spyro. I really need to go back and visit some of the ones I missed.
I still have this game to this day. If my memory still serves me,there's an exploit in the beginning of Bombopolis. If you go left and keep jumping up on this column, you can get multiple lives. Hope that helps someone.
Oddly enough i did play this game back when i was a kid It was truly a bizarre feeling for me to have the game giving you the ability to hold your enemies and mess around with them like toys or dolls, i do believe it is kind of undercooked in some areas but the atmosphere, the tone and the style of the game kept it memorable enough for me to want it to find it a decade later and wanna play through the whole game again If they didn't end up making more games like this or a continuation of sorts because of the popularity of Earthworm Jim back then i understand but if it came back someday whether officially or not i wouldn't mind seeing their mechanics being touched up to work better and make it a more enjoyable experience, Speaking of EJ it did throw me off that one of the levels they straight up use a level track of that game in this but other than that and sooooorta feel like it kind of drags at times it is a worth unique experience to check out, heck maybe i'll come back and play it again this month Pretty solid video!
I agree that it can forsure have its moments where it seems to drag it’s feet, but overall I definitely recommend giving it a play through my friend! It’s enjoyable enough to endure forsure 😁🌹
This game walked so that Jak II, Vexx, Rayman 2, Ratchet & Clank Deadlocked, Shadow the Hedgehog, The Legend of Spyro and TY 3: Night of the Quinkan could all run and soar.
I just found this recently while I was browsing random games on an emulation site and thought it was pretty dope after playing a few minutes of it. I've always been intrigued by 2.5D games, especially platformers. They're able to create such a unique aesthetic that hasn't been done to death or, even copied very much. I'll add it my list. Thanks!
I used to play that same demo disc over and OVER for Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider, and yes…Wild 9! MGS was groundbreaking even by today’s standards with how it played like an interactive movie and Wild9 was always pretty fun but I could never find a copy of whenever I went to Tower Records or Walmart w/ my Pops 🤷🏽♂️ If this was on PSN, I would download and play it rn in a Heartbeat just because I was reminded of it! Instead…I’ll have to sail the high seas ☠️☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️
This is the game I remember playing a lot from a demo disc. I thought Wild 9 was a fun game but never got to own one (had an N64). Despite that, this game left a strong impression in my head, one of those games that accomplishes what other less memorable ones lack. RIP Shiny Entertainment.
Nice one, and also E.Jim and W9 came from the same people, that's even cooler. I have no PS2 games to suggest except the usual suspects of that console. But I LOVE God Hand, and i started playing in 2018.
i was a Shiny mark retroactively because of MDK 2. i have made 2 custom Kurt Hectic action figures. i like EWJ, and Messiah is really actually good (don't hit me). Sacrifice is a bit beyond my concentration ability- but super intriguing. Wild 9... i owned it but it never clicked with me. i should get it back... *grabs eyepatch*
I actually have a copy of wild 9. It's from when i was a kid, and it's been so long that i can't even remember whether i finished it. I'll have to dust it off after watching this
This game makes for a great speedrun ive found some really crazy skips. It had so much potential with the characters and setting sad it never got the love it deserves
Doubt I could recommend anything new to you. Is Astro Boy on GBA or King of Demons on SFC really a hidden treasure after it's been mined for content so many times? And does either still hold up? As for Wild 9, it's bloody genius... but it felt like a missed opportunity. Why name a game this creative after what I can't do and won't see? Can you imagine Jet Set Radio demanding we stick to the character marketing chose for us? Also, personal taste, but I prefer the way the Deception series allowed more player agency in the silly sadism mechanics.
Hey I’ve yet to play either, so those could work! 😁 They definitely seemed to flop a bit in the marketing of wild 9 forsure, I’m sure that company transition had something to do with it!
It was forgotten because it was forgettable. Commenting on this because the booklet that came with this game was fantastic pulp sci-fi. Incredibly imaginative, it could have easily been fleshed out into a series like Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy. The game though ... was a dud. I recall everytime the main character (Wex) jumped, you heard "Wexcellent!". Playing this was annoying AF.
When It came out there were ads for It on TV and magazines everywhere, After all It was made by the same people Who did Earthworm Jim and mdk. The game itself wasn't bad but was ruined by the stupid mechanic, the only way, to kill enemies which becomes tiresome After the First level
It's only a "hidden gem" because a solid majority of the people here in the comments were born in the late 90s to 2000s. Wild 9 advertisements were everywhere. The demo made it even less of a hidden gem. There's nothing "hidden" about this game.
@Vynsent I can see how it might seem that way, especially considering the possibility that you were born anywhere between the late 90s to early 2000s. I feel like your younger audience has no real exposure to the vast library that is the entirety of the the Playstation's games, Japanese only included. Only the entry level titles that have frequented top 10 ps1 games lists are what they really know. Then again, this video may just be catering to the youngins. Damn I'm old.

You’re not lying! It was like the Wild West for developers back then, you never knew what they were going to come up with next 😅
My cousin in Germany had this game and I forgot what it was called for the next 20 years until this video showed up in my recommended.
Glad to have found our way to you my friend! 😁🌹
Such an underrated classic! I loved playing this back in the ps1 days
Truly a hidden gem!

I love that idea! They could even make them into a little collection, including earthworm Jim 😅 I would buy!
Thankyou Heavynsent now I can add this Batman beyond esque soundtrack to My collection.
Haha glad you enjoy it! Always a pleasure 😁

Haha I love that! As for those enemy sounds, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to shake them 😅
Criminally underrated game. One of my firsts as a kid, next to the OG Resident Evil, let alone RE2. Again. Criminally underrated.
Definitely! I’ve yet to meet anyone in person who remembers it, and have never been able to find a physical copy of it!
As someone who's extremely jaded with modern gaming I really enjoy these forgotten retro games videos..I look forward to more!!
Much more to come! Thank you so much for watching 😁🌹
Great breakdown
Great soundtrack

Definitely a hidden gem! I didn't even know about this game's existence.
Hopefully this video can bring more people to it’s attention 😁 Definitely a game worth playing!
I rememberd this game and was so intrigued of what the story was about.
They definitely left it up for the imagination while playing 😅 I kinda dig that part of it though!
I had this game as a kid and completely forgot about it until I see the thumbnail for this video.
Awesome game, wasn’t it? 😁
This game walked so that Jak II, Vexx, Rayman 2, Ratchet & Clank Deadlocked, Shadow the Hedgehog, The Legend of Spyro and TY 3: Night of the Quinkan could all run and soar.
It really was an innovator of its time!
Hey I think this style of video is super awesome for your channel--I like how youve been mixing up well known with lesser known stuff!
Very glad you enjoyed! Definitely looking to keep a variety 😁

Haha maaan, that demo disc really had a whole generation in a chokehold! It was so good!
@@Vynsent I think it was the #7 or #8 Interactive Demo Disc. The purple joint
Damn. I payed this game on a demo disc years ago and never remembered it. Thanks for making the video and thanks yt for the recommendation
Glad it jogged your memory! Thank you for watching 😁
that stage on the demo, had a really good bgm
I love this game. I used to play it all the time on that demo disc as a kid.
Was a banger! It was so different for its time 😁
This game looks ill, captures that late 90s/early 00s dystopian industrial aesthetic that Abes Odyssey had
It definitely does 😎 That’s one of my fave things about it! Great atmosphere 🔥
loved earthworm jim as a kid cant believe i never heard of wild 9
It still holds up to this day! Definitely give it a chance when you can, it’s very fun 😁

I just found this at an event ha. It's basically a cartoon
That’s very cool! I’ve yet to find a copy in the wild unfortunately 😅
The goat, spyro year of the dragon
Such a classic!

AI video suggestions 😂 anyways. What a great rare and underrated game .Perhaps a port to Google Play would do it some justice.
Hey I wouldn’t mind it! Would make a pretty amazing phone game, as long as they hold the micro transactions 😅

I will admit, it did have some very repetitive sound effects 😅 I had never gotten to see the inside of the booklet though. That sounds awesome!
tbh i only followed for the hard intro. if you were a producer that would be the hardest tag EVER
Ayeee! I appreciate that. I was looking to have it altered a bit soon but I might just leave it the way it is 😁
interesting how the main character of the game looks so suspiciously like the creator of the game...
Maannn, you're onto something with that. It's like Sam Lake with Max Payne 😅
"Your grandmama's mama!"
🤣
Wish they put guns in this game like Jim, i´ts so boring and stressed grabbing enemies all time...
It can get a little taxing but luckily the game isn’t too long!

@@Vynsent yes that added some diversity to the gameplay 😅
Just a nitpick but MDK is not a first person shooter its third person with first person aiming
I was mistaken 😅
you could have cut those first two minutes. I feel like most people watching something like this would know what a platforming game is.
