I was at that show. In fact, you can see my bald headed goatee face up front there. It was a great show. I drive over from Iowa to see this show and it was worth it. Those little ladies know how to rock!
Hey TPP, thanks for this! Math-y, I like that! This was their first "headline" show in the US (LA and Las Vegas were cancelled and Pasadena was a big festival) and they were very nervous, but they really brought it and put on a great performance!
Thanks for the reaction. Kawani is often a favorite with reactors who are musicians themselves. I saw them live in the Boston area and was very glad I did. About the mix - I've noticed in a lot of recordings of VoB in small venues, the drums are very up front. When I saw them live, I understood this right away - they don't turn up their amps very high (or didn't in Boston, and it matches the sound from other small venues). If you're not recording through the mixing board, the drums are just louder - and Siti seems to enjoy making as much noise as she can : - ) The band that opened for them (Above Snake - they have a good sound, but are much more conventional) had their amps turned WAY up. I was glad I'd brought earplugs. I put them in after a few seconds of Above Snake. I took them out for VoB, who played at a loud, but comfortable volume (I think they must create their distortion early in the signal chain). The advantage of Above Snake's approach was that there was a very even mix of drums vs strings no matter where you stood (no chairs in the main area at that venue). With VoB, you could change the balance by moving around the room (although I mostly stayed glued fairly close to the stage, but behind the first couple rows of people and off to the side, 'cuz I'm taller than a lot of people and create an obstructed view behind me : -).
