- On the second day of this trip in the Charlevoix and North Shore regions, we're heading in the direction of Tadoussac, the gateway to the North Shore region.
To get there, you will have to take a ferry from Baie-Sainte-Catherine. The ferry is free of charge and can take about 100 cars and 430 passengers. There are 3 departures every hour in each direction.
During the crossing, which will last about 15 minutes, get out of your vehicle and move to the bridge and keep your camera nearby. It is not unusual to see belugas or other whales that live in this unique ecosystem.
Located 215 kilometers northeast of Quebec City, Tadoussac is a well-known tourist destination since it is at the confluence of the Saguenay and St. Lawrence rivers. The village is one of the oldest permanent settlements in North America.
Before the arrival of the French, Basque, Breton and Norman fishermen were the first Europeans to frequent the area. Tadoussac was visited by Jacques Cartier in 1535 and by Roberval in 1542. It was in 1600 that Pierre de Chauvin established the first fur trading post there.
It was here that Champlain signed a first agreement with the Algonquins, the founding act of New France. Since that time, the region has been inhabited.
Built on a sumptuous landscape, Tadoussac is the symbol of harmony between sea and land. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Quebec, the village of 800 inhabitants welcoming thousands of tourists every year, especially because of whale watching excursions. It is a wonderful place for the whole family.
Tadoussac boasts a host of tourist attractions, including the oldest wooden chapel in North America, built in 1747. We visited the Marine Mammal Interpretation Centre and walked the Pointe de l'Islet trail for whale watching.
A little set back from the village of Tadoussac, the Dunes sector is a must for any roadtrip in the region. These famous sandy elevations are among the natural jewels of the North Shore.
The landscape is unique and is a fusion between the Sahara and the great Canadian forest!
You can spend a few hours there to appreciate the landscape and for whale watching.
The dunes of Tadoussac are the result of the action of the wind that forms mounds of sand. They were formed more than 10,000 years ago during the last ice age. Always in motion, these dunes are not conducive to the growth of vegetation that could stabilize them. This is why they are said to be fragile.
After a busy half-day in Tadoussac, we head to the village of Les Escoumins. An excellent seafood meal awaits us, as the North Shore region abounds in seafood products. Don't miss the lobster club or the lobster guédille.
After dinner, we leave for Grandes-Bergeronnes, located 30 km north of Tadoussac, for a sea excursion aboard a kayak.
Excursions last 3 hours in the company of experienced interpreter-guides who can share with you their knowledge of the wildlife all around. It is not uncommon to see whales.
The cost is approximately $60 per person for this excursion, equipment included.
At the end of the day, we return to Tadoussac where we will spend the night. This is an opportunity to enjoy a beer from the excellent micro-brewery after a lot of exercise and to take advantage of the spectacular view of the bay of Tadoussac.

That ferry was huge!! So many cars. I’ve been in smaller ones, but nothing even close to that size. The dunes and water were beautiful. Great drone footage. Jeeping, hiking, exploring and kayaking- Y’all had quite the adventure. Lobster! My favorite.

Never heard of it, it’s beautiful. These dunes are unique as it’s partly green. The trail, the beach, the chapel and its history... I kayaked for the first time last year and I enjoyed it so much. Thanks for showing me this place.
