The game is not as slickly designed as the fraxis xcom series, but it has waaay more depth and the tactical battle feel more like the ebb and flow of a firefight, with having to pivot from destroyed cover and pulling your guys back during a fight to get med treatment. The later missions can be brutal, but if you build up your team smart, you can keep that from feeling punishing. Minibosses are a interesting trick that feel hard till you figure out the trick.
Most of the complaints non bug related that i see, are from not accounting to the options available to you. A number of bugs are annoying but the only real complaints that hold up are the early game is not engaging enough, the lack of a physical contrast of night and day in tactical maps (it does it under the hood which hurts the palpable tension you felt in the original), and finally the lack of directional spotting (the covering fire system somewhat brings this aspect back to life, but spinning your unit around to get 360 awareness in the original XCOM was something i missed a little.

There weren't bonuses for multiples of the same structure being adjacent, though the defense meta was pretty set in stone. In UFO you really could get away with having multiple bases for different purposes (2-3 combat bases for different continents, a science base, a manufacturing stuff for money base, a storage base or two, etc.) in fact having only a single base was one of the hardest challenges you could attempt. In XCOM Enemy Unknown (the one released in 2012) you had only 1 base, with a 7x4 grid to build your base facilities in, the middle column always had your access lifts. In that one you did get adjacency bonuses for different "classes" of building (eg. Workshops, the Foundry and the Cybernetics lab, or the Satellite buildings). 1. It lacks personality. No animated cutscenes, memorable set pieces, or soldier bios. Faction system is clumsy. Voice acting and music are trash.
    2. It is unbalanced. Enemies gain power much faster than you do and difficulty seems more tied to RNG than actual stage in the game. You can easily get an unwinnable game even at lower difficulties by failing to do things the game does not explain well.
    3. New combat features (high unit HP, armor, free-aim) all work against you. Free-aim can be buggy and not shoot where you tell it to. Enemy durability can make you straight up unable to damage them but game fails to properly prepare you for these challenges.
