Awesome! My mom just had her left eye yesterday and her right eye in 2 weeks. Already she can't believe how much better things are. She can see color better too. I'm so glad I finally talked her into getting it. She has Dementia and I had to tell her now is the time, because later on it would only make it more difficult for me (her caregiver) to get her through it. She's so wonderful.

Dr. Michael Chua. Before any one goes for their surgery they should first read and listen to your information on TH-cam.
You explained all so well. Takes away one's fear before the surgery. Thank you Dr Chua and keep up the Great job. You are so

Dr. Michael, that was one of the best presentations I've ever seen on medical issues of any kind! You not only explained everything in great detail.... but you explained it in a way that we can easily understand it.

I appreciate the full walk through you gave. I'm 68 and just got told I have significant cataracts. That was a surprise to me. I just thought I needed new glasses. Thank you for telling me the pros and cons. I'm still very nervous, but you didn't mention any patients not surviving, so I will go to my pre-op appointment. What happens if I can't hold my eye still. My eyes tend to follow the floaters, and before I know it, I'm looking at the bottom of a page, TV screen, or phone screen.

I love to read and that has been so hard to do for so long. I also am far sighted in one eye and near sighted in the other so your explanation on the Mono lenses helped so much. I was a bit young when I got them, too. Did you see "floaters" all the time in your 20's only to have optometrists not able or willing to tell you why? More is known now, & I'm older than you, but it makes me wonder if the floaters were a hint that cataracts were forming. Just wish I'd known earlier, but advancements are such that maybe it's a blessing in disguise that it took so many years to find out what was blinding me! 💙😂

I've owned an optometrist practice since 2004, and I every time I hear a patient ask, "When is the ophthalmologist going to take out my cataract?" After our OD's find evidence of Posterior subcapsular cataract, Cortical, age related etc, cataracts, I laugh a little inside my head.
I've had some patients wait 4 or 5 years until their cataract is "ripe" enough to take out.
One day, I'm going to call the cataract specialists we refer patients to and ask them to tell the patients exactly why. For some reason, they never say why, just when so patients at our practice that keep coming back are always like, "Why aren't they taking out my cataract?! I can't drive at night and can barely read!" And I'm always saying "Every cataract is different, you'll have to speak with your ophthalmologist."
Then they'll be like "All he said it wasn't ready to take out, and that was 2 years ago!!!"
    Me: 😬

My cataracts got to the point that depth of focus was so bad I fell down not once, but twice because I missed a step on a staircase. Also, could not read ANYTHING. If my eye doctor told me to 'wait', I would have a fit. But, I understand your point. However, your patients may think you are just stringing them along. Anyway, take care and best wishes to you and your practice.

Hi Doc, awesome and very thorough explanation of cataracts!!! Greatly appreciated and I feel well prepared to make an informed decision regarding surgery now or later. I’m in my late 50’s and have haziness which has an effect on some things. However, I’m able to drive well and see mist things we’ll enough, but with some haze at times. My Opthamologist stated my cataracts are ripe. So I’m thinking that it’s just a matter of time before things get worse. They indicate that surgery is needed. Thank you much for taking the time out to do such a thorough and well informed review of this matter.

I had my surgery a week ago today in Toronto . . . I am 79 years old and both eyes were done during the same appointment . . . I chose the lens provided under our government health plan . . . arrived at the clinic at 7 am . . . registered in and then taken to the area where a basic pre-op was performed . . . the anesthesiologist saw that I was quite nervous about the whole thing as he ask "is there anything you would like to share with me" the surgery began at 8 am . . . a short period of time later I was back in the pre-op area where I was offered a cold drink and cookie and told that as soon as my ride home appeared I was could go home . . . I left the clinic around 9:45 and took it easy for the rest of the day . . . at no time have I experienced any pain . . . at times there is some discomfort with a feeling like there is some dust or something in the eye and that seems to be diminishing as time passes . . . the following day, using our public transportation system, I travelled to the hospital on the streetcar for the day after appt with the eye surgeon who shared he was very happy with the surgery and would see me in another week . . . that appt is tomorrow . . . I do not have words to express the changes in my vision that now has given me permission to re-think how I wish to spend the rest of my time on this planet . . two years ago when I saw the doctor for the first time he told me my eyes were not ready yet for surgery . . . it has been a long wait . . . please, please, if your doctor suggests you would benefit from cataract surgery, go for it . . . GO FOR IT . . .

It depends on who is doing your surgery in Ontario. Some private clinics will charge you upwards to $3-5k.
I had surgeries in the Hamilton, Ontario area for both eyes. I paid for laser measurement ($200-250) and an upgrade on each lenses of $70 (in 2015 and 2017).

I recently went in for Cataract surgery all went well in just half an hour only to be told that a fragment of the Cataract had gone behind my eye only to have the new lens removed and had to go home with no lens in my eye at all. I am now going in after 6 weeks to have the fragment removed and a new lens put in . I have found the whole experience traumatic and here's hoping all goes well this time.

I was just recently diagnosed with "severe cataracts" on both eyes at my annual eyeglass exam. NEVER been told this in my life. I have NONE of these symptoms. NONE. I doubted the diagnosis. I had two subsequent exams in the following weeks by independent eye doctors (one being the eye surgeon I was referred to) and BOTH told me I did not have any cataracts. WTH?? Why would an eye doctor tell me that??

I went to Alpine eye care in Gaylord Mi. They messed my right eye up kicked me out the door and sent me to my regular eye doc, they kept saying it would clear up, it never did and I have to live with that the rest of my life. So if your in Northern Michigan I would suggest Traverse City Eye, they do it in thier office. The other thing Alpine did was a week before my surgery that I paid up front was going to cost another fiteen hundred for using some mesuring device. Like I say do not go to any Alpine office in Michigan.

I had cataract surgery and Carmel, IN. I was in and out in no time flat. It was super easy and I have had no pain or discomfort. I totally recommend it. And my eyesight on the eye that I had surgery on is better than the eye I didn't with glasses.

When they did my second eye they dropped the old lens into the back of my eye. They did not tell me what to expect and just sent me home to come back next day. The pain was so incredible and unlike my previous cataract removal which was painless I decided to take off the dressing about 3am. When I looked through my injured eye it was like a cockroach was in my eye. It was terrifying. I was hysterical. I am cockroach phobic. I turned up at the hospital and they couldn’t deal with it they sent me to another hospital. Unfortunately I was in hospital 5 days but they saved my eye. I had to have surgery to remove the “cockroach” which was the old eye lens. Only nerve block not even sedation was given as I couldn’t have general anaesthetic due to my heart condition. The surgeons/specialists took wonderful care of me and they were so reassuring I was able to stay calm. Afterwards it was such a relief the “cockroach” was gone and there was no more pain. I had issues after found I had macula degeneration and had to have injections into the back of my eye but NOTHING hurt. They take such good care of you to make sure there is no pain. I would have my cataract surgery all over again even with failed surgery because in the end the results are so good and my eyes so comfortable it was worth it. During the 3 surgeries there was no pain. Most people are afraid of pain. The surgeries are painless completely. You are unlikely to have complications that I had, I’m just unlucky. I didn’t move it wasn’t my fault. It was just a freak thing. Just know if anything does go wrong they can fix it. My first surgeon did a great job on my first eye she just fluffed up doing the second one. Accidents happen I am unlucky. This was at Perth in Western Australia.
