  • I wanted to share a cheap and easy way to make a skateboard that requires only a hand full of inexpensive tools. The first step in this process is making a set of molds which we will be doing in the Dimm Press style, which is one of the easiest and most forgiving types of mold you can make. Get out there and make some boards!

    This is the best video I've seen! I'm 15 and only recently got into skateboarding but I've always loved woodworking and I was very surprised to see that you need a mold for them. I was super anxious because mold-making is normally super difficult but this is by far the best video series I've seen, it's made me far less anxious about making a board and actually is getting me excited!

    Sorry to disturb you but here in Italy that foam is pretty difficult to find because here the r's scale isn't used. I have a question for you, as Wikipedia says: "R-value is a measure of how well a two-dimensional barrier, such as a layer of insulation, a window or a complete wall or ceiling, resists the conductive[5] flow of heat" So shouldn't be more correct to use the "Compressive Strength" as parameter? I found a lot of specs on the homedepot website and a r7,5 mean 103Kpa while r10 mean 172Kpa. Do you think 120Kpa would work?

    • @GoodRoads
      @GoodRoads  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! Yes. Compressive strength is exactly what we're looking for, if those stats are right then 120Kpa should work. There's no reason you couldn't make a freestyle longboard with this method, but you might want an additional layer of plywood. The foam only needs to be as thick as the tallest feature on your board, so unless you want steep kicktails, the standard 2" / 50mm sheets will work.

    • @pietrocolombo2104
      @pietrocolombo2104 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GoodRoads thank you soo much! Which could be the problem of using a too hard foam? I have seen a 280 kPa foam.

    • @GoodRoads
      @GoodRoads  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would absolutely not be a problem. If you can get harder foam, get it. The only reason I'm using the softer stuff is that it's commonly available here in the states. Harder foam will preserve the details of your mold better and last longer, go for it!

      Finding good sheets on Amazon can be tough, the best way to do it is to actually go to a lumber yard. If they don't have baltic birch in stock they should be able to order it for you. You can get a 5ft x 5ft sheet which is enough to make a couple boards depending on the size board you're making

    Hi, would the pressing method used in this series be suitable for 1.5mm maple veneer? I only ask, as most methods online which use veneer typically use a vacuum press. Cheers.

    • @GoodRoads
      @GoodRoads  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would lean towards no. To press a veneer deck with a two-part mold you need a pretty precisely matched set of molds so there are no gaps when you clamp everything together. You _can_ use this method and add a sheet of something soft like a yoga mat to both sides of the mold to try to account for any gaps, but it's not a guarantee and you lose the ability to have super accurate curves. It would work better for something like a cruiser than a street deck.

    Hi there. Excellent videos, thanks. You suggest using plywood already cut to the length and width of the final deck but isn't it necessary to allow for some extra trimming? If the boards are the exact size of the final deck could there be a risk of delamination? Thanks!!

    • @GoodRoads

If they have it in stock you can usually get a 5ft x 5ft sheet for pretty cheap and if they don't they may be able to order it for you.
      If you're looking for veneers Roarockit sells them in small quantities, or you may be able to find a shaper in your area who will sell you some. If you're trying to press a deck out of veneers don't use this method though. I've got videos of a couple different methods that will work better for that style build here on the channel
