How to Use a Miniature Pirate Ship to Create an Epic Rum Commercial [Tutorial + Breakdown]

  • This was by far the most difficult product shoot I have ever done. My general concept morphed along the way to fit a more plausible outcome, but I set out to use a miniature boat and make it look close enough to the shots you see in Hollywood films.
    I learned a lot in this process, but most importantly: not to give up on my project!

    Because you have your own style, if you keep doing these bts tutorials your channel is going to be the next big thing. I really believe that. A lot of channels start off teaching and then turn into a vlog and/or equipment review channel. And, they're typically reviewing gear way out of the budget of the average videographer. If you watch the market most creators struggle with not only creativity but how to execute their ideas. Your channel solves that problem.

    • @AustenPaul
      @AustenPaul  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m really not trying to sell anything I want to stay away from that as much as possible but I do have to make a living as well so who knows if I keep growing but I can promise I will always keep it original there is no point for me to do a green screen tutorial or basic lighting setups having the same content as 1000 other people doesn’t help anyone grow and learn.

  • @TheFilmGuyOfficial

    Great work ! For the first time see the video some part was no clearly to understand what it was, like filming under water the undersides of the chip the camera most not standing in the center but left or right side also to see the top of the chip ! The next opinion is that the lidel “Big” wave was no need to shoot one because the small wave gives you how small the ship is and gives it the form of a toy !

    Hey Austen, great tutorial, you really went out this time! This whole video is very ins"pirat"ional ;) If I may just suggest something, it's that you add a little bit more sound design to the commercial, especially for the Kraken which would feel a lot more real and present, as well as the ship (maybe by adding more cracks, sounds of the bells, the ropes, a distant scream at the end). I feel this way the audience would be much more immersed (lol) in the story, and from the beginning! Just a humble though. Eitherway, keep on creating men, you're doing a great job!

    Ok I really like the look and I think it is good enough for what it's for.
    But to sell the lightning effects I would not use the key light
    I would try to bring the soft key down (moon motivated) and imitate the lightning with a harsh fresnel light maybe from an angle to create shadows and structure.
    Also if you work with miniatures you have to slow down your footage way more to match the physics and sell the effect of an heavy object.
    Nerdmode deactivated:
    I like it :)

    • @AustenPaul
      @AustenPaul  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very good ideas, we never used the key light for lighting always was our back light. Also trying the fresnel didn't work because it was to harsh revealing the pool unfortunately or would totally agree.
      Yeah we slowed it down as much as possible even then it still looked fast if I shot it at 1080 I could have done 120 frames which would have been nice it was a toss up haha
      Thanks man yeah we had to adjust because of our situation it defiently was an experimental phase for me learned a lot.

    The ship shots could be more SLO mo. The ship shot from underwater looks fake because the ship doesn’t seem to be moving. Still, good tutorial.

    Awesome video, but your definition of parallax is not correct. Nothing has to stay centered and your BG and FG 100% does not need to be moving in opposite directions of one another, here you probably mean that the camera's movement will appear to be moving in the opposite as the objects position on the screen, because I mean for example, if you are tracking a long shot in a forest the trees in the FG will be moving in the same direction as the trees in the BG on screen but this is still parallax because of the difference in translation on screen due to distance they are from the camera. Parallax is merely having movement between more than one object/plane at different distances from each other in order to simulate depth by the different speeds at which they appear to be moving on screen.

    I like your videos, but this one looked too childish with the toys, especially for a grown up drink. That is unless you were going for a fun and non-realistic video ad

    Your work is awesome but I would slow down a bit all of those clips where you can see the ship. It would make the ship feel more realistic because you would be able to "spot" the weight of it. ;)
