- “Be Still, My Soul” is a hymn with a rich history and deep emotional resonance. The original lyrics were written in German by Katharina Amalia Dorothea von Schlegel in the 18th century. The hymn was titled “Stille, mein Wille; dein Jesus hilft siegen” and was part of a collection of spiritual songs published in 17521.
The English version we know today was translated by Jane Laurie Borthwick in 1855. Borthwick was instrumental in bringing many German hymns to the English-speaking world2.
The hymn’s melody, known as FINLANDIA, was composed by Jean Sibelius, a Finnish composer, in 1899. This melody was originally part of a symphonic poem called “Finlandia,” which was a patriotic piece reflecting Finnish history1.
“Be Still, My Soul” has been a source of comfort and hope for many, especially during times of hardship. Its message encourages trust in God’s guidance and faithfulness, even in the face of adversity
This is my favorite hymn. It is like a deep breathe and exhale. I repeat these words to myself as often as I think of them "Be stil, my soul.
Lyrics
1Be still, my soul; the Lord is on your side;
bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to your God to order and provide;
in every change He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul; your best, your heav'nly Friend
through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
2 Be still, my soul; your God does undertake
to guide the future as He has the past.
Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake;
all now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul; the waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.
4 Be still, my soul; the hour is hast'ning on
when we will be forever with the Lord,
when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul; when change and tears are past,
all safe and blessed we shall meet at last.
