A great book about criticism is "An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth" by Mark Hatfield. He talks about criticism and how you just learn to accept it as a good thing because in space if you screw up, you die. So you learn to adapt to it because it's to yours and everyone else's benefit. So now when I am at work and I am criticized whether it is nasty or constructive I just take it and learn from it. It has since worked well for me.
Your videos have a genuine feel to them. Yes, you can improve ... but we all can, including those guys you watch that make you feel inferior. Don't feel inferior, learn and improve. I don't watch EC because I want to be a better carpenter (because at best I'm a hack), but I enjoy learning about other crafts, trades, and skills. You would be amazed how much of what I've learned outside my job and hobby interests have helped me in my (very) unrelated work. It's not a one-shot thing either ... being well-rounded is a full time occupation! "... and keep up the good work" May I borrow that to pass back to you? Regards, R
“Not just me as the guy that you make look good” - Man, don’t under sell yourself. You ARE good, in heart and mind and ethos and all that you espouse. Keep up your good works.
Nate, only about 8 minutes in, have not read any comments yet BUT I must say this - Scott, the EC and EC2 are NOT 'crap'! You do not have, or need, a whole Hollywood film crew like they have in the land of make believe. Your products are real world, very interesting, educational and perhaps best of all Scott's voice and demeanor are perhaps the most calming part of my day. Thank you and your dad for all you do. A wish if i may... more videos working with Cy! My both your families get through this COVID-19 craziness intact.
If you feel for Nate and Scott then you are part of my family :) Edit : We are all family we need to teach our children these things to break msm narrative .
If what I am watching and reading on any social media platform does not enrich or inspire, it is dumped, ignored and avoided. Life is too short to focus on negative crap. Life is better when learning and being shown a better way or another possibility, this is why I watch The Essential Craftsman. Keep up the great work.
Among the many jobs I have had is mortuary work. To get the job I was required to get a cell phone. (No cell = No job.) Then I got calls at any time of the day or night. You see -- those who are dying are like babies being born. Absolutely ANY time, day or night they both come and go. And I had to go when I got a call to do a removal. I was a widower who no longer had a full complete home. I rented a room. So it was best to notify me by cell. No matter where I was. Then I could take the information and go out and do the job. From there it grew. I had learned Windows on the computer. Now I was texting. My communication world just grew. Now it is easier to talk with brothers that live far away. And my sister and I are closer than ever because we "talk" better in text. I only have a smart phone. I watch TH-cam, movies, listen to music and the few other things I do, all on a smart phone. Even Covid news. When I get a chance I love to read. I like to hold a real book. But if I must I do it on my smart phone. I have also been an arborist for many years. Nearly all my customer contacts are on or in my phone. If they will text me then I have a record of their wants and prophibitions. Prune this but leave that one alone. On TH-cam I have learned SO much! Updates in tree care and much more. I often reply to videos I have watched. Sometimes it is to discuss content with a channel creator. And frequently I write for fellow commentors to help them see that the chain saw sharpening in the associated video was good or bogus. Most chainsaw sharpening I have found on TH-cam is BOGUS!!! Don't you people read your saw manuals??? So I am also on YT to help and share. I like a quiet house or vehicle. Most of the time but not all the time. My cell phone helps me arrange that. Our world is certainly changed!!
All I have is a flip phone and I am 73.. I have done video at out church in Jefferson, TX when we lived there. Just as a producer and director determine the outcome of a movie or TV show, the creator of a TH-cam channel determines the outcome or style of that channel; no two are alike even if the subject is the same. Teaching children about social media is the parents' job instead of the school. Balancing a check book or credit card statement is just as important today as it always has been. For information, I have made a few comments to several creators about how I have done something that was similar to what was shown and when a response of "Hey that is a good suggestion" "I didn't think of that" or similar makes my day. We all have experiences in our lives that create a wealth of information that not everyone can learn for themselves. Sometimes a "have you thought of this" turns on a light bulb. It probably may not be criticism just a different way of doing or approach. You two remind me of my dad and me. When I first met Adam Booth, Keith Rucker, Stan, and Joe Pi, I felt like I had known them for a while and they were like they were on their channels. When I met Joe Pi at the Good of the Land at Lindale, TX in 2018, I had shown him some of my wood carvings and he said "nice to meet you and by the way nice work". You two seem to come over as the same kind of people.
Gentlemen, I love your introspection and insight... truly the mark of humility and grace, well learned wisdom and the gratitude to give back to the community. Don't run faster than you have strength!
Nate - I get what you said about seeing amazing production quality on other channels. If you know who The King of Random is (was, RIP), back when he had fewer subscribers than me, like, a few thousand, and he only had 2 or 3 videos (not the thousands they have now), he contacted me about some of my tutorials. I had just started posting early foundation tutorials, and had about 20 or 30 project tutorials planned based on them. He wanted to jump the gun a bit, and find out how to make the things I talked about but hadn't filmed yet. So we went back and forth and I wrote the tutorials to him by correspondence. His work ethic was so hard, he went and filmed them immediately, and then told me he'd hold off on publishing them until I was done mine. I saw the quality that he'd made, right from day 1 when he had almost zero subscribers, and I kinda felt that me making those videos was now obsolete, so I told him to publish them. They were so, so much better than anything I'd done or could do. Well, those project tutorials I never finished but that he showed in his videos exploded in popularity and launched his channel. He went on to post daily low-effort experiment videos, but, accumulated 10+M subscribers before he retired (and then passed away in a hanggliding accident), I meanwhile haven't posted a tutorial in 7 years and am frankly shocked I still have ~5k subs. It's a really clear example to me that, my content is and could be good, but not when it's me making it. He became the #1 DIY-ish channel, and I barely even take time to tinker on my own stuff with the camera off. It's a tough realization that I'm just not good enough to be the best. Frankly, I also feel the same way about your videos. You make the best content of your niche, in the world. (As you mentioned a few weeks ago, technically everyone is the best at something, it's just a matter of how many qualifiers you have to apply to it to narrow their scope, so, you could maybe redefine success as how few qualifiers it takes for one to be the best at something). So, in the way that you look up to the production value of other content creators, I'm sure there are tons of people that look at what you produce and say they'll never be that good. And, hell, on a 360p camera and my first attempt editing, my videos have hundreds of thousands of views. I'm sure there are tons of people who'd be thrilled to find and audience of 1000, let alone 100,000s. Meanwhile, do other careers have this? Does a barber feel like they shouldn't be cutting hair because they're not literally the best in the world, or do they even care if they're not the best barber even in their own barbershop? Does a plumber reconsider plumbing when they're not world-class? Does every private feel like they're not good enough if they're not an admiral? Everyone who doesn't live in Buckingham Palace feel like their house is inadequate?
I must have missed this episode, but I'm glad I backtracked. We have a fellow down near Houston who has made a business of interviewing and filming the older generations of families to create a historical record. I think you have discovered the same benefit of 'social media.' I am too old to travel to Oregon; however, if either or both of you ever return to Texas, I will fly to exact a meeting with you......I hold you in Highest esteem! 🤠
In previous comments I mentioned Peter McKinnon as a b roll filmmaker. Another suggestion would be Jesse Driftwood. He is a phenomenal filmmaker too. I think you could get some great ideas for your channel as far as transitions and things of that nature.
Please do not feel bad about any of the content you have put out! I thoroughly enjoy every single video of yours I have watched, and to add to that they videos have gotten better as time has traveled on. I think it is good to strive for better, but never diminish what you have accomplished. I live near Philadelphia, and I am trying to figure out if I will be able to come out to meet you folks during your open house you plan to have when the house is done, your content has made me feel strongly enough about what you do to want to spend several hundred dollars (and more importantly several days of my time) to come and meet you! Keep up the great work!
I loved a comment you made in an earlier video that this is a 'sanitized' version of yourselves - and why I also love AVE for his unsanitized self! I was a filmmaker for a long time and you really have no reason to feel that your output is not as beautifully produced. I think your videos are from a technical perspective beautifully crafted and you are very good story tellers. I appreciate your balance in these turbulent times - keep up the great work..
On the bench in front of you at the end of the video was the medifore for every technoligy from the first time someone picked up a brance (club) till now. Almost all of it is a double edged sword. Thank both of you!
All right, first comment!! I think social media is a double-edged sword. The biggest problem is getting young people, teaching young people how to differentiate virtual from reality. And probably not just young people, but everyone... adults included. It is a journey we will all go through together.
My work partner, a 55 year old man, showed me a picture somebody posted on facebook and I asked him what in h*ll made him think that it was a real picture and he responded..."well why would somebody post something that was fake??" I shook my head but kept my mouth shut. There aren't enough words in my vocabulary to help him. And to think he is a registered voter......
Im so addicted to my phone that i cant have silence anymore. If im home alone in on TH-cam 100% of the time. Most of the time im listening to podcasts or videos that are teaching me useful skills but its still an addiction.
Your videos are wonderful! Your work is amazing and I'm glad this is available for me to watch. What a wonderful use of social media! Thank you for the good work.
thanks!! This is great perspective, I appreciate the community of like minded people here on your channels, I have read a couple of the books mentioned in previous episodes and thoroughly enjoyed them. Keep up the good work !
My Dad had a phone in his car when I was in the 9th grade back in the late 60's. My siblings and I thought we were so cool because we could call our friends while driving and tell them what we were doing and where we were at.
I think John and Hank Green are the best example of using TH-cam. They started out with an experiment where they only talked to each other via TH-cam videos for a year, and now run a media empire with 20 channels (not including the one that started it, which is still a thing in its own right.)
Great episode gentlemen. I went down this rabbit hole last year. Some good books on the subject include Zucked, The Attention Merchants,The Filter Bubble and Antisocial. Also while not directly about social media Propaganda by Ed Bernays is worth reading while your down the rabbit hole. The conclusion I arrived at is humans and society are more or less facing the same issues they always have they are just being delivered by new mediums. Another great source is the Centre for Humane Technology. They are a non profit seeking to maximize the value in social media while minimizing harm. They have a podcast and the founder Tristan Harris has done a few Ted Talks. Finally dont worry about being "small" youtubers. As scott mentioned about finding new friends, you can also find true fans. People that genuinely enjoy your work as opposed to people watching or listening to something on TV because they have no choice. There is an essay about this called 1000 true fans but I cant remember who wrote it. I'd consider myself a true fan of yours considering I've now spent half my lunch break typing this comment. I listen to 4-6 hours of podcasts per day and I never leave comments but with this one I feel a strong desire to get in and share my thoughts with the excellent community youve built here. This is the same reason I support you on Patreon. I dont contribute to any other youtubers. Essentisl craftsman is the only reason i have a patreon account. This comment is too long. Thanks for reading it. Keep up the good work!
I will probably never meet you guys but because of social media, YT, I feel like I know you and would be honored to have you as a friend!!! I video a lot of things that I do but never seem to get around to posting them on my channel. The last thing Mr. Scott said was to figure out how to make this media pay. I think I need to figure that out!!!
"Learn in your own sandbox" - 100% This. It is super easy to get discouraged by looking at other people's green lawn. As a friend's grandpa used to say; "Water your own dang grass!"
My understanding is, there is a passage in the New Testament that mentions not comparing ourselves to others. We each are responsible to God for ourselves. And how we treat our families and others. So let us each do our best to learn in life and to seek to please God. He makes life worthwhile and will guide us to worthwhile thinking.
I love the comparison of balancing the checkbook to some kind of understanding how social media works. What, indeed, is the "21st-century equivalent of balancing the checkbook" -- something the schools don't teach, but is critically important?
I believe that would be knowing how to proficiently use your banks app and website as well as the websites you are receiving money from, including payroll and all deposits against every time you insert that chip.
I watch very few mindless channels on TH-cam. The ones I do watch I found only because TH-cam put them on my "Recommended" list, for some reason. If something looks interesting I may check it out, and some of them have been very interesting or just funny. All of the other 300+ channels that I have subscribed to are in the construction or maker community. I think channels like Essential Craftsman, Adam Booth's "Abom79" or Keith Rucker's "Vintage Machinery.org" are very interesting because I can learn a lot from them. I've been a Software Engineer for over 25 years and I do a lot of DIY projects at home, mostly woodworking stuff, so I guess you could say I like making things with my hands. I guess that's why I like those channels, because they show how to make or fix things. Keep up the good work and ignore the trolls, I'm sure they're few and far between (probably just jealous of your success).
If Cy has WiFi in his house, a cell phone similar to those offered by Republic Wireless would work. They use WiFi when available and switch seamlessly to cell towers when there no WiFi. I've used that provider for years.
Just be yourself do not try to be like other's because, you are not them. Improving one's self is a good thing and we learn how by listening and watching others. There are many people that are better at doing things than I am and always will be. People need to except who they are and live with there short comings. Social media can destroy your own selfwroth if you let.
There comes a point when social media becomes anti social media and gets in the way of real relationships and conversations. Other than TH-cam I stay away. Even comments such as this go against the grain but there is no alternative way to let you know how much I admire and enjoy your efforts to provide valuable and educational content.
What I like about this channel is, I feel like Im on the back porch, talking and listening with good friends. Im with Si, I dont have a cell phone either, when I retired I threw it in the lake. Goodbye. Call me on the home phone, email me, come by, or send me a letter. They are needed by working people with kids, and a wife. I have neither
Scott And Nate feel like some of my family that have died over the years . Reborn and here in my phone it's awesome. Cy Swan is basically my grandpa but still alive .
You are like family to me I can relate to Nate as my oldest brother . Scott my grandfather on my dad's side . Cy Swan my other grandfather from my mother's side . If I didn't mention my father it's because he paid the bills but didn't ever see his children as something/ someone to grow more something to keep alive ...
A great book about criticism is "An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth" by Mark Hatfield.
"... and keep up the good work"
May I borrow that to pass back to you?

“Not just me as the guy that you make look good” - Man, don’t under sell yourself. You ARE good, in heart and mind and ethos and all that you espouse. Keep up your good works.
Alan Bromfield I agree these guys are one of the best in their lane

Enjoyed watching a couple podcasts. Really genuine. Thank you guys. And keep up the great videos.
Your videos are great. Real craftsmanship is something rare today. Don't let the trolls get you down.
Keep up the good work!
Keeping it REAL! I love you guys, "keep up the good work."
Scott, your Sunday face analogy was right on.
All I have is a flip phone and I am 73.. I have done video at out church in Jefferson, TX when we lived there.

Family history ! Your Great Great Grandkids will be able to feel as if they know you. It’s absolutely incredible!

The education content is fantastic.
I feel it is honest and no bull.
I loved a comment you made in an earlier video that this is a 'sanitized' version of yourselves - and why I also love AVE for his unsanitized self!

If you haven't already....can you explain how Damascus is made and how you manipulate it to get the patterns you want?
A saying I am fond of comes to mind the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence because it is fertilized with more BS great show
Very informative I’ve always thought that the real benefit is for recording the family history
Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍

"Learn in your own sandbox" - 100% This. It is super easy to get discouraged by looking at other people's green lawn. As a friend's grandpa used to say; "Water your own dang grass!"
Another wise saying:"Grass is often greenest over the septic tank."
I really enjoy these conversations guys.
If I lived in the same town I could be your friend too. You guys are "good people".

@@timothydillon6421 Well said.
A lot of monster channels are disingenuous, I think your doing a great job with the channel
If Cy has WiFi in his house, a cell phone similar to those offered by Republic Wireless would work. They use WiFi when available and switch seamlessly to cell towers when there no WiFi. I've used that provider for years.
My mother is 86 she does not have a smart phone or iPad. Carries a flip phone for security reasons. Does not even have WiFi.
I agree. Very time consuming. Wasted work time. But I am guilty.
