How do you feel about being vulnerable to earthquakes in California as a whole I'm not from California so this is why I'm asking I'm from the East Coast and when it comes to the thought of moving to the West Coast we're always saying oh hell no they have earthquakes what is your opinion about earthquakes on the West Coast?

I’ve lived in CA my entire life, so I don’t think about them much. I know a big one is possible and believe they happen every 80 or so years, but I haven’t experienced one. I’ve only felt a few in my lifetime and they were small, quick shakes. Nothing fell off the walls or anything.

I was born in L.A. and it is definitely NOT what it used to be. But I *will* tell you this, L.A. is NOT a friendly town and, in my experience, never has been. People mainly socialize in cliques based on who you know, what you’re into, and your educational and/or socioeconomic status, etc. A lot of people, including many natives, are very “Hollywood”. Be careful, use your intuition, and you may stumble upon a few people who aren’t completely full of sh*t. And I say this with the best intentions.

VERY ACCURATE run-down of LA. I knew before I came here (in 2004) it's hard to make friends, but I decided to make it a priority and it can be done, but you must work at it. The pros of living here have always won out for me and I still love living here. I love love the weather, loved living in Echo Park for 10 years, now I live in the far west valley and it works for me very well as I'm a lot older now. The valley is easy to live in. I lived in Phoenix before moving here so the heat is nothing to me, and as soon as the sun goes down it's always pleasant.

@@jeremynewyork: Awful? 😂 I’ve been here forever so I know people. But I would imagine it’s hard for new folks.
It’s hard to meet people and figure out where to go, what to do, and what neighborhood to live in.
The city used to be more people oriented. The streets were decorated at Christmas, they haven’t done that since the early 90s. And there were a lot of programs for kids.
Police stations used to have haunted houses at Halloween. When I was a kid, the LAPD had the D.A.P. (Deputy Auxiliary Police) program. Your parents signed a permission slip, you got a special “DAPS” jacket for free, you’d go to a designated spot, usually in front of a school, and a couple of plains-clothes cops 👮🏾‍♀️👮🏻‍♂️ would take you places on a school bus.
L.A. is not like it was. It used to be affordable. Most people who came here stayed. It’s charm and personality are disappearing. The only time I get a glimpse of what it used to be like is from movies and TV shows from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. And my memories. 🥲
I love New York, though. My brother’s been there since the 80s. In recent years, L.A. seems to be trying to be like New York. It is failing miserably.

the big con for me is the rush hour 4 pm to 8pm, so if you live out side the city of LA, don't make any appointments around that time or else you'll be late coming back from LA if you don't leave out early.the big Pro for me, there's always something to do and sometimes it feels like your part of movie when you participate in a pop-up shops event.

Metro transit is really good in LA. It gets a bad rap. It goes everywhere in the county. You need to leave early if you're trying to get somewhere at a certain time but the same goes for driving because of the traffic.

LA lacks... black people and a black community. I came from NYC and I was so used to seeing black (whether educated or uneducated) to mingle and socialize without this pressure to something you are not. I moved here 5 months for grad school (UCLA) and I thought it would be a little more black than what I see. I think it's difficult for both black men and women, which is traggic given how beautiful this city is.

    • @friendscallmebri
      @friendscallmebri  2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

I do think it’s challenging finding Black community here, but due to being a transplant and not necessarily knowing where to look. I first lived in Hollywood when I moved here which is about 5% Black. but my current neighbor is majority Black.
Being here for almost 2 years I’ve found more pockets of Black people, but most of California is not as populated with Black folks except Oakland. Oakland has a higher percentage of Black people than LA (about 20% vs 6%).

The transportation here is good, not great but good. It’s not like Houston, or Atlanta. LA is spread out, however all the cities are connected so you can get to Pasadena to Santa Monica or you can go from Long Beach to downtown within an hour and some change on the train in LA city limits and don’t have a car, You can get around UNLESS you tryna go up into the Hollywood Hills, Calabasas, Malibu etc then yes you need a car, lift, or Uber. It's not that black men don't date black women, it's that people are really open to dating outside of their racial/ethnic group in LA/Southern CA. For a time it also seemed to me that, for example, Asian women only date white guys, or, recently, Latinas only date white guys, but of course that's not a hard fast rule. If you're looking to within your racial/ethnic group, that is definitely available.
I agree that dating is hard in LA. I used eharmony and ended up meeting my wife there. But, man, the dating scene is fraught with bs. For example, there was a woman I briefly worked with whom I had good chemistry with. I asked her out directly and she declined so I was like, okay, moving on. But she kept flirting with me thereafter and when a group of us went out to have drinks, she was all over me after several drinks. People apparently prefer an indirect ("organic") way fueled by alcohol to show others that they like them, instead of just being direct and definitive lol

@@friendscallmebri Well, I'm brown, so I can relate. I think skin color is significant (and can be seen as a detriment) in the dating scene even in such a diverse and open place like LA. So, I'm 32 years old, from the Bronx, NYC. My wife is 4 months pregnant with our first born. We're considering a move to LA because the industry I'm trying to enter is there (screenwriting).
My concerns are related to the crime problems, and whether it's a good place to raise a kid. Even as someone from the Bronx, I was kinda shocked when I visited San Francisco and people were shooting up heroin on the sidewalk, next to human feces, in broad daylight. People have told me that it's basically the same thing in LA.
Have you had bad experiences in this regard? Or are people exaggerating when they say LA has become unlivable because of these conditions?

Hey Timothy. Congrats on the new baby! Having lived in both areas, I would say yes - what you’ve seen in SF can also be seen in LA (primarily in parts of downtown).
But LA is HUGE and you can definitely find a area that’s favorable based on what you want.
I don’t have kids yet, so I haven’t considered that when making my decisions on where to live. Check out areas in the valley; you might find something you like there + you’d be close to studios.

Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank, Arcadia, Eagle Rock, and areas around Northeast LA are pretty clean, safe, and decent for families in general. Unfortunately most places within LA city limits are pretty crime ridden and dirty, including Downtown LA and especially, Hollywood. As an LA native, I can't warn you enough about how dangerous Hollywood can be, don't let the tourism fool you. I used to work around the Hollywood and Highland area and I've seen some crazy stuff. Unless you can afford a gated community in the Hollywood hills, don't move there, it's full of dangerous people. Otherwise, good luck from a fellow screenwriter (hobbyist)! 😎

Totally disagree about the public transit. I can commute from Woodland Hills to Pasadena solely on public transit. It will take 1.25-2x the time than by car but I can work on the trains/buses and just sleep versus having to constantly be awake and bored out of my mind driving.
Public transit is talked down upon here but mainly by those who never rode it. Sure it is not the most luxurious experience however it is quite decent. Main advice I have is to avoid the red line at night time, trains come so late and at that hour it is the weirdest people on there. Prior to the pandemic that line was pretty dope honestly, since then it really has fallen in quality even still in 2023. Only time to ride it at night is if you’re heading to Staples center with like a million other normal people or something, then it is alright. Anyways best line is hands down the gold line from Union to Pasadena area. Nice trains, clean, frequent, adorable, and full of normal people. The red line is like the exact opposite experience. Also good line is Expo line to Santa Monica, super dope totally worth it. Also take that and take the metro bike shares and bike your way to Venice on the beach bikeways and that’s an experience you’ll never forget haha. Lot‘s of fun!

I was born and raised in California, San Diego to be exact and I still live here, but plan on moving up to LA soon. My experience is that most black men date outside their race. Unless they live their lives in proximity to black women, they are likely to date outside their race because there just aren’t as many black people out here. And also because that’s just their preference, according to some of them. It’s very diverse, lots of other races besides just black white and Mexican. But I believe black people are only 5.8% of the population here, so I guess I get it. But it is bothersome. All of the guys I have dated have been from tight knit black communities where I go to church. I’ve never experienced dating a black guy at any of the schools I went to. Seemed to me like they preferred other races more, that’s just my experience. Also didn’t you say your husband wasn’t from LA? (This is my first video I’m seeing of yours so, sorry if you already stated this in a bother video somewhere) where is he from?
Also, I’ve been wanting to try out the bumble app for friends, it really is hard to meet likeminded women to be friends with in at this stage in life in general, so I was wondering about how it would be when I move to LA. I’ll have to check it out for myself. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Hello Bri. What a great overview of your experience in LA. My 24 year old son just moved to LA from NY last week. He is in the USC /Exposition Park area. To say he was in culture shock is an understatement. He thought being near a college would be a safe environment. Apparently if you’re not on the campus it’s a horror show. This is coming from someone who has worked in all area of NYC. He’s seen a lot. He said nothing could have prepared him for what he has seen over the last week. I feel so bad. He’s having difficulty finding places that 20 somethings hang out in. He is a hip hop and club enthusiast and was hoping to find some spots to meet people. He’s very gregarious and personable but feels that it’s unsafe in his area.
Can you suggest an area or venue that might be up his alley?? TIA.
