  • Christian tradition refers to “the devil” or “the evil one,” but is this one being? What about (the) Satan -- or Samael, Mastema, and Azazel? Join Fr. Andrew and Fr. Stephen as they have a look at the wickedest of the wicked.

Note to self: always skip ahead 20 min to avoid relentless references to comic books that are evidently very chuckle-worthy.

Sorry but I think this is false advice to give. One has to remember that comic book writers, scriptwriters for animations are knowledgeable individuals and in order to write a good story based on characters, they had to study history, religion, philosophy, psychology, and politics. The writers that I know of anyway hides lessons and stories of warnings in children entertainment. Comic books and animations (few gems among a pile of garbage) do contain a lot of information and fact hidden in them on purpose and to ignore them as a childish joke is a sign of ignorance in my opinion. To dismiss this is a bit like saying that we can ignore certain parts of art because it’s a certain way and only focus on one aspect of art to get what art is all about

1:23:00 This is a common misinterpretation. According to scripture fall doesn't mean sin itself, but is one of sin's inevitable consequences (sometimes immediate, sometimes delayed).
"Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall." (Proverbs 16:18)

I'll preface by saying that I enjoy jokes/interesting anecdotes as much as the next guy, but the issue that I along with seemingly many others are having with the show is that they are CONSTANT (to the point that they almost feel like the focus of the podcast) and so rather than a coherent conversation with a good flow, we are instead left with a dialogue that feels stilted, awkward, and laborious to listen to. It feels like the hosts can not wait to jump on EVERY opportunity to make a joke that quite often feels very much forced and not at all worth breaking the flow of the show. If that's not bad enough, so many times one joke or non-sequitur leads to another, then another, so on and so forth. The end of the shows are so much more enjoyable to listen to because for a moment the hosts are able to deliver a cogent message devoid of jokes and non-sequiturs. I've been listening to the podcast for a while now but it's become unbearable for me to listen for the aforementioned reasons. Fr. Andrew and Fr. Stephen are interesting and intelligent enough to produce an excellent, entertaining show without all the needless tangents and jokes.

I thought Isaiah14 was about how Nebuchadnezzar placed a golden statue of himself and made the people worship it, thereby proclaiming himself to be like the most high. Is that reference also relevant?

I got into this when reading the prayers about the Theotokos being the only one who like knew about the incarnation save Gabriel, But it’s like did the devil(s) know? When Jesus says he witnessed Satan fall like lightning from the sky? Now that touches on the specific time about Genesis 3 or after the crucifixion. Must’ve been before? And if it was then the devil(s) must’ve know about the incarnation but Church Fathers often talk about The cross being like the hook 🪝 or the bait that was swallowed up by death if you will hence the sign of Jonah and no other sign would be given. Anyways good stuff in the pod and thanks for the discussion. Praise to the God. The h and yea about the bait i.e, Satan was unawares of the repercussions but again biblically they knew who he was the Holy One of God prior to crucixion, so again but either way the important thing is that by death he trampled down death and bestowed life to those in the tombs.

@mrockley1194 has it exactly right. At seventeen minutes in, I decided I'd had enough. This was my first time as a listener, and it's almost certainly my last.
Why it is that grown men who moreover are priests think that a podcast! confers upon them license to act like 16 year old boys?
My friends know me for my humor, which, as is true of all the best humor, has an edge and sometimes a lot more than an edge of darkness to it. But I don't indulge it in ecclesial things. And I don't appreciate two men, especially in their position, who sound as though they're cases of arrested development.

@@tjt2383 true, but the problem is that after that opening, I can't take these guys seriously. Sad, isn't it? Many years ago, if a young person applied for a first professional job with a large American corporation, it wasn't uncommon for one or two of the people who would make the decision to hire or not to invite the person for lunch at a fancy restaurant. They were curious about something: when the entrees arrive, would the applicant season his food before he tasted it? If he did, he would without realizing it be scratching himself from consideration. The company wanted employees who had the common sense to at least take one bite of the food before seasoning it.
My experience with these two guys is my equivalent of "the salt and pepper test." Too bad. I hope they grow up eventually.
