I would love to know what Mike thought about
Blink's Dude Ranch (pop punk or melodic hardcore?)
Sum 41's Does this look infected (melodic hardcore? fun punk?)
MxPx (Punk rock? What about suggestion box or from new york to nowhere)
    Offspring before Americana
    Rasta Knast (German Band)
    Shai Hulud (too metal?)
    Bridge to Solace (too metal?)
and modern technical stuff like Forus, Sunsgrind or Sicktrick....

Don't worry, Mike. They may have taken "hardcore", but you invented the term "nawsome".

It was weird how hardcore became more metallic in the late 80's. Leaving the 'hardcore punk' bands to just be called punk. But it's metal w/o clean vocals & palm muting. Then the early 00's, hardcore became even more metal when bands started ripping off Iron Maiden/Judas Priest-style leads.
