  • DIY hot wire made from nichrome resistance wire from Amazon and Single pole dinner switch from Lowes. I wanted this project to be as cheap as possible. I used leftover wood, and destroyed appliance power cords for the AC power.
I couldn't find out if AC or DC was better, but I could cobble together stuff for AC quick and cheap. All in, I spent ~$14. I used a wood frame to isolate house power while I was grabbing the contraption while cutting; and I had wood and deck screws. Initially I didn't have screws on the bottom of the feet while free handing the curves of my couch cushions; but added them when I needed to "plain" a flat 2" section out of a larger piece.
At the end, the MDF of the legs started to give out, so if you want it to last more, I'd go with 2x2's or real wood and not chip board wood. Also, I used two strands of nichrome twisted together so there was more resistance and stability in the wire while it was hot. You may want to get 16 or 22 gauge wire which will last longer if you have a larger project.
    Parts:
    2x2 wood (free)
old cd radio power cord (free)
    old extension cord (free)
    4" deck screws (free)
single gang blue new work box (free)
single pole dimmer switch from Lowes D-600ph-DK $7.98
nichrome resistance wire 28 gauge 80 100' spool on Amazon $6.49

I bought a dimmer switch that has 3 wires coming out of it. 2 black and 1 green. How do I wire this switch to the in and out wires?

I don't think polarity matters in a single pole dimmer.
