whenever it's someone's birthday I always stick to getting the "perfect" jift for them and basically just stress myself out on what they like the most. The easiest/perfect jift I ever got someone was a sweatshirt because that person loved fashion and stuff
This is a way that I do it if I want it to be a surprise but it only works if you have a good memory or take notes. Months in advance, ask them small details and spread it out so it doesn't seem too suspicious. Questions like, "What's your favourite color?" or "If you could have one thing in the world what would you get?" or smth like that. If you plan it good enough, chances are they will forget about that interaction but YOU won't. Then when you give them the gift they'll be like, "HOW DID YOU KNOW I LIKED RED AND MOTORBOATS COLLECTABLES??" But, they have planned their gift themselves and they have no idea.

About to help all of you. My love language is giving gifts so I've had this shit mastered since 6th grade. Ask them immediately after the holidays or anytime between Jan-AT THE LATEST- August. They will forget they told you and bingo, you have the "ohmygod how did you know I wanted this" gift. Also pay attention to what they gravitate towards to in stores and especially pay attention to the stuff that they initially pick out but then put back because they can't afford it
