- How to build a pull out couch in your conversion. I built this slatted sofa in my school bus conversion to use as my bed and couch in the office area. It still needs adjustments but I hope this video gave you the steps it takes to build a pull out bed on your own.

Two thing my friend; Get some Bees Wax for between the slats. They'll slide smooth as silk reapply once or twice a year. And the other, we all need a place for valuables check into electromagnetic locks, inside the armrest would be a great place.

Ambulances are horrible. After working for years in one and seeing all the crap that goes on in the back, no way would I ever want to stay back there. It is next to impossible to get it totally clean.
@@mikel9567 I live in a retired ambulance. Still has all the original bits. I just extended the 'bed' all the way across. I don't care about what happened in it.

Planning a first trip back to Colorado to see friends this summer.
Maybe using that backrest space for a “secret” security cabinet.
I found a 7ft long futon for $150 bucks off craigslist and threw it in my bus with rubber straps. An instant adjustable couch & full size bed that I can stretch out in, with almost zero installation costs. A bed that I can comfortably fit 2 adults on, that fits on the rear or side, leaving an open path to the back door. I can always take it out if I need to use the bus for hauling toys. An elaborate build-out just is not that necessary with all of the portable products and tech today. Saving thousands to spend on some nice gear while gaining the time to really start living and traveling. One con/disadvantage would be the accessible storage, I suppose.

Hi again Mike! I’m loving the couch, great job! Would you mind a couple more ideas? I hear you on not using the space behind the backrest. I’m a bit of a space miser so what if the backrest panel were able to tilt forward (pivoting on the bottom edge) so you could expose a line of hooks? I’d be trying to hang up cords, ropes, tie downs, jammies, ditty bags, etc. A narrow space but could prove helpful in place of having to take up drawer space somewhere else. Now for something that’s got my mind really working: The front panels of your slide-outs are essentially attached to the sliding planks using the 2 X 2 wooden cleat they all are screwed into. Leave the front panel screwed to that cleat, but instead of screws driven from the top of each sliding plank to the cleat, use hinges on the UNDERSIDE to attach the cleat to each of the sliding planks? OR, maybe even easier, hinge the front panel to the cleat instead of screws. This way, as you lift the construct, the front panel can fold in to the under side of the planks (as they swing up vertical) and be out of the way when you need to access content in the storage area. It’ll be a fortune in hinges when you’re done but I’d think worth it! Thanks so much for sharing this journey with us. Luke sure does a great job with his renderings.

Rachel’s got a great idea for acquiring a Commander! I’ve got a 2008 that I took the 3rd row seats out of, built a platform for storage/sleeping. I have plans to change up my platform a bit to make a pullout kitchen. I put a gun rack in the back passenger side window to store my kayak paddles, and plan to add a cargo net on the ceiling to hold clothes and stuff. Just gotta say I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Jeep Commander! The downside to finding one is they were only made 2005-2010.

Like the couch/bed plan, I will be doing 2 single sized sofa beds in my van, one for my dad and the other for me😊 but after I get my van walls and topper done😁

The space behind the back rest can be a great spot to store reflectics for windows
Cool video and thanks for the detail on how to build the slide-out couch/bed. When I do mine, I'll have extra padding in the cushions.. Three inches looks a bit thin for my taste - but will work well for you. Thanks for taking us along!
Awesome. if you increase your cushion size make sure to account for the extra depth in the couch design.

go get some parafin wax (found in the canning isle of your local grocery store) and smear that on the wood-to-wood edging of your slides. it will make it much easier to slide in and out and it is not too expensive. // smear it where ever two pieces of wood touch when they slide together.

Saved this in case I ever get bored and want to make it the ‘right way!’ Oh, I have to ask, because I’m not yet in a schoolie, why type of rig does Rachel want? I tried looking it up, and what I found was a behemoth of a commercial bus.

That is a clever design, very "space conscious" - I suggest you look into a piano hinge if you do this again, simpler to align and install, easy to adapt for multiple openings (simple cuts in one side of the hinge) and because of its intrinsic planar rigidity, it would bring superior strangth while opening and closing compared to multiple individual hinges.
Also my friend, fix the guard on the chop saw, it is supposed to be a barrier between your fingers and the blade. Safety first right?

Great build as always. I love small space solutions. Quick question: I noticed you put two non-hinged pieces side-by-side creating a big hole in the middle of the bed when pulled out. Do you think this will be an issue in the long run as that is where I assume your hips will hit?
I've brought the big bottle so "actually" away :-)
One thing I've wondered: why does everyone leave a gap between the couch/cabinets/whatever, and the windows? Not much of a storage space, why not at least silicone in(to prevent condensation) some foam insulation between? Window's partly blocked anyway.

the lack of wood glue is concerning, pin nails are only designed to hold a piece of wood in place until the wood glue makes a permanent bond.
Is there a ledger board going along underneath the hinges to support the board in the closed position, because is not any weight put on the hinge will cause it to rip right out. Video was not clear if there was one or not.
Who made the cushions for Navi??? Will the ones for ivan be made by the same person??? What weight/density foam do you use for cushions???
When I build mine I'll have doors to access.
Are you going to put a hook or something on the back rest to hold the bottoms up while you access the storage?
Yes, I am still trying to figure out the best way to hold them.
I think it would be uncomfortable trying to sleep on all those cushions with the separation between I would use a futon mattress so there isn’t any bumpy lumpy spots where the cushions sit next to each other

He said he is not going to use the backrest dead space for storage, and put permanently installed hard boards over it...but we all know what is really going on. He is gonna put secret access panels in while the camera isn't rolling, so he has some secret storage that people watching the VERY detailed build series won't know about. The question is; what is he gonna store int he secret storage spaces?
My guess is, family pictures, pictures of his friends, and pictures of his two buses. Oh and of course, corn liquor, in case he has to do some bootlegging.
