  • After recently discussing his favorite design for a screwdriver handle, Adam is floored by the generosity of some viewers who mailed in Stanley Workmaster drivers from their workshops to help Adam fill out his set. Here are just a few examples of the ones that came in through the Tested mailbag. Thanks so much to everyone who sent one!

    So, if that handle is indeed your favorite, what about picking the most pristine condition one and make a silicone master so you could cast your own in resin? That would only need to be a one-part mold, right? Seems simple enough.

    My granddad was an electrician working at an nuclear power plant construction site. He put a toolbox together for me that included a couple of those screw drivers. @@morkovija Solar is already by far the cheapest option, if you don't think this you need to do some research. The majority of our daily energy will definitely be solar, a smaller fraction will come from other energy sources. The fraction is dependant on the country and time of year etc: The more solar that pops up the more money it makes and the more incentive for companies to research improved products which so far has great results.
      Lots of countries are moving or have already moved in bed with solar and for good reason. Good ol coal etc: is for undeveloped countries and countries whos politicans are ruled by companies wanting to make a buck at everyone elses expense who also use propoganda to create public discourse that ignores the fact solar is the most cheapest, most safe and most environmentally friendly.
      Not saying everythings gonna be 100% solar, but most places will be operating on mostly solar. Solar and batteries for now is a waste of cash so keep it simple and have the right balance for cost effective and reliable energy production and distribution. Seems simple enough to me and hence we are going in that direction. Base loads and demand peaks are only an issue if everyone chooses to not account for them and put crayons up their noses.

    Isn't it funny how we often fall in love with a tool that we remember from growing up? If you ask me to picture a screwdriver, for me it's an old Thorsen with a four fluted orange handle with a green end cap. My dad had two of them as I was growing up. Those are devilishly hard to find now, and aren't the greatest, but they fit a picture in my head.

    • @Zoreta
      @Zoreta 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Isn't it? I learned to solder around middle school, and over the years I came to a deep understanding of my dad's soldering station. You could set the temperature in 5 degree increments, and I knew exactly how I liked it for a given application, exactly how I liked my helping hands positioned, etc. Except he had always called them 'handy helpers', so as far as I knew that was their proper name!
      Once I moved out and had to get my own set, the hardware store guys thought I was nuts. "You mean helping hands?" "Probably! ....wait a minute how do you control the temperature on this soldering iron?" "You don't." "HUH??"

    I too have a pet favorite from my early years in motor and tool repair. We handled Klein and Vaco. The Vaco nutdrivers are what sold me on the brand. The hollow shafts would allow me to work on motors with extra long threaded bolts. The Kleins had rubber insulated grips for electrical work, but the hole was shallow. And the Vaco handles were clear colored coded. And I could put them in a lathe and extend the hole though the handle. My ratcheting quarter inch Vaco driver is still working, forty years later.

    I know how you feel about finding the perfect fitting, perfect working, perfect feeling tool. I have a flat bladed screwdriver with a really wide blade, comically wide even. It was an old Ohio Bell telephone company tool that my Uncle gave to me who retired from working there ages ago. There is just something about it for me, the ergonomics hit every thing perfectly for me when it is in hand and it seems to do jobs that other tools fall flat just trying to get started. I have never found its equal or another like it. It is one of the tools that is always grabbed for any job on the go and when the day comes that it finally fails and has to be retired I am going to mount it on the wall in a shadow box like Carroll Shelby did to Ken Miles' wrench, though with obviously different connotations.

    I had a 8" cabinet screwdriver that had that style handle in yellow. The operative word "had." I lost it when all my hand tools were stolen out of my truck.
    The one thing I have learned. When you find some item that "works" for you , you don't change. Then you buy duplicates.

    Hey Adam I concur, the older "made in America" Tools are usually superior to their modern counterparts. However, I have found Wera screwdrivers to be fantastic, along with some of the Tekton (only the USA made) lines. Both are among my most used tools

    I've never thought about them, but I've been using Stanley Workmaster screwdrivers for at least 40 years. I have the #1, #2 and #3 Philips, #2 and #3 flathead, and very narrow-bladed "cabinet" flathead example that's often come in handy for tight spaces. I didn't realize these were a "thing," but they're pretty much all I've ever used for decades.

      I use many different ones as i tend to just grab what ever out of the draw. But my go to has been those for literally 20 years and I'm only 26. Same two screwdrivers the entire time one flat one cross. Im not even sure how long my dad had them before i was around.

    Adam, I found the Triangular shaped Screw Driver handles you liked so much.
    Tekton makes a modernized "High Torque" set of Screw Drivers that have a Triangular shape.
    Technically they're DiTrigon shaped. But all their manual Screw Drivers are all made in the USA.
    The regular Tekton Screw Drivers are Square shaped, so you might like those as well.

    The toughest screwdrivers out there are probably Klein, and I also highly recommend Wera and Vessel. If you're on a budget, Craftsman is the way to go.

    I went to work construction just out of high school in 1972, and the first screwdriver I bought was a 6 inch large flat Stanley with that handle. The shaft was marked Boron steel. I still have it, surprisingly, given the abuse it got hanging in my tool belt all these years.

    For forty years I have been looking for a Channellock visegrip. My buddy had one, and it was so practical and ergonomic. The Irwin patent release is in a bad place, and sometimes hurts. Channellock put their release where your index grips the handle. So you can put the squeeze on a fastener, without locking. Ratchet easily, lock easily, and release so easy. Can't find them anywhere. Maybe there was some patent litigation. Just know that those forty years a
    Would have been much easier.

    My favorites screwdrivers are HF Pittsburgh with green handles with no silly soft grip. They have smallish plastic handles with chromed square shanks going all the way through, and heat treated very hard. Yeah, I had to touch up the flat blades when new, but they stay crisp for years.

    • @georgecroney6168
      @georgecroney6168 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Old vises are worth very little these days, you can pick up a huge fantastic quality English or USA made vise for less than 50 bucks at estate sales etc. Don't look on eBay, they want 5-10x it's value on there and they look great in photos til they turn up and they've been hand painted the wrong colour. And whatever you paid for an 'antique', you'll always get back. If youre curious, but one and enjoy it, quick releases are nice. You can usually tell if there's any damage to the screw by the condition of the handle. Don't worry about jaws, that can be your first project.

    Dear Adam.. i used to store tools like that too. unill i discoverd inlay foam and sawi could use my cnc to route out the shapes of my tools.
    so i put my tools now in the tray laying neatly on display in foam. it looks much better and you can more easily grab the right tool.
    why not do the same for your screwdrivers.. then when you open a drawer you see them laying out neat and straight in right order
