This summary fits nicely with my limited experience - with duck eggs. I "inherited" 5 mallard ducks, two drakes and 3 hens. Had to move them to their new home, and they never agreed as to where they belonged. Because I couldn't keep them in a safe pen, predators started getting them. I did salvage a dozen undamaged eggs before they were all gone, laid over a period of about a month. Incubated that dozen, and got 7 chicks from them. This generation of ducks knows where home is, and comes in every night, about an hour before sun down. With two drakes and 5 hens, I hope that a couple go broody. It's just about time for them to start laying, and they show some interest in the nest boxes. Here's hoping!!
I had an egg from a hen that passed away in December of 2021 that didn't lay eggs her last few weeks of death either! I incubated some eggs without knowing one was from her. That was June of 2023! I didn't expect the egg to survive for those many months! She was our only black sexlink hen. Rooster was Red Junglefowl, so when it hatched, I didn't believe it would be her very own offspring! But it's a beautiful hen from her genetics. She recently hatched her very own 7 barnyard mixed chicks. They're so cute and she's a great mother, feisty protector but still kind enough not to hurt me when I'm close to her chicks. She might be my broody hen each year.

Holy cow! Great info! We've lost a one of our hens recently due to an unknown illness so we've been trying to figure out why our other hen was being a bad mom. "Clutch" great info!
Yesterday I discovered a clutch of 12 or more of eggs in a hard to reach spot of our covered run. Today I went to collect them, but a hen who has not been sitting on them decided to start sitting on them today. I only have two hens that could have laid those eggs (one being the one that is sitting on them now), so they are from one or two hens max. So it's probably 1-3 weeks worth of eggs. We have had temps above 100F lately that drop to the 70's at night. I am guessing maybe up to 6 of them are good if any at all. I am debating just letting her be and checking the eggs in a week or so to see if any are good. It would be interesting to see and she knows what she's doing, right? 🙂
Belinda hatched 6 of the 7 she was sitting on. There is one still left. I’m not sure if it will hatch, but she hasn’t given up on it yet. Let me know how your 12 do. Have you candled them to see if they fertile?🐥🥚
This ❤🙌blessed us ...we have a beautiful hen ...S☃️nowball is her name....she is a white silkie 😊 she is pure white and pure JOY! She will bonce/waddle over to us and our 4 and 7 year old newphews to be held🤗🤗🤗🤗...crazy right? anyway we all adore her!!! She sleeps in a dog crate inside our home because over the 7 years we have loved chickens we have had 3 other silkies and their feather feet IMO make them easy for Hawks to catch 😢😢😢..and she is PURE white so she is EASY for the preditors to see. We have let ber FREE range w the other 10 hens n i rooster but she sticks close to home but the others roam all over the 10 acres...gosh i am rambeling ...sorry...to the point ....f
First of all, I love the name Snowball. Your husband is right. Silkies are by far one of the most broody chickens and they are great mommas. It’s also fine if she sleeps on a towel and the vinegar/water/rosemary/lavender oil is also fine. If she is use to it she should be good. Thank you so much for your kind words. You have about 30 days. It’s amazing, the rooster’s sperm can stay with the hen for awhile. I had a hen sit on eggs 2 weeks after one of my roosters was killed by a hawk, And bam two of the chicks born were his. 🥚 🐣😜

So if my hen don’t sit on these eggs. I have 3 atm. It wouldn’t go bad over night? That’s my biggest concern. So what you’re saying is. The progress don’t start til she actually sits? And I had more eggs but something kept eating the eggs. I’m thinking it’s cats or rats or possum. ☹️
Yep, until she starts sitting or you put them in an incubator the process hasn’t started yet. Your true success rate would be to start in the first few weeks.🥚😊
She may not be broody yet. Sometimes another hen will lay on top of hers and take over. She may also want a clutch laid before she decides to sit. How many chickens do you have?

Candle them in about 7 days. If they have babies in them she did good.😊🥚
