BANGER
I'm glad you covered No. 461. I recently begun volunteering at RPSI Whitehead where she's being preserved. She recently got her cab done up as a display, so you can get up in her cab and her controls are all tagged with what does what. Whitehead has some really good engines, from the Guinness brewery's private shunter to the only operational full-scale compound engine in the entirety of the UK in No. 85 "Merlin." If anyone here is visiting Northern Ireland I'd recommend giving them a visit, they also do excursions semi-regularly. Maybe you'll see me in there working the yard or restoring an engine once being sick stops messing with me.
THEY CAN'T HOLD JOHNNY CUBA!!!!
"The Authorities did in fact hold Johnny Cuba"
"And gave official thanks to Zebedee and Hercules"
Well well Johnny boy
I mean, he is magic
It's interesting to see a Tugs/Victor Tanzig reference in a History in the Dark video.
One of the highlights of LMS Princess Royal 6201 Princess Elizabeth was during the Diamond Jubilee of her namesake the late Queen, where she blew her whistle to start the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant.
It also has the distinction of pulling its namesake when it was assigned to the royal train the following month.
It's a huge shame she wasn't in traffic for the Platinum Jubilee last year. If only the firebox hadn't cracked.
man I'm glad you finally included an SAR engine like the 19D. Fact the 19D was more of a branch line engine so was the 24 while the 15F being a mainline engine. South Africa only stopped using steam in 1992 when they all were officially replaced by diesel
The DSER locos would make a good basis for an RWS James.
**james theme starts playing**
I agree, not to mention preserved since all L&YR class 28 being a 0-6-0 (Non 2-6-0) were all scrapped! I am very proud! James is one of my two favorite characters along with Edward!
@@davidstrawn9272 On the plus side, one L&YR class 27 is preserved, which was the class that got rebuilt into the class 28's.
YESS, Thanks so much for covering W class by beloved.
W classes are one of the best WAGR locos (Aside from the L class) ever. They really left a mark on not just WA's railways, but others because of their widespread preservation. Great video, and you did quite a good job on covering the Ws.
I literally smile when you sang that song. We all like happy trains lol
You legend!! Thanks for covering 15 & 16 from the DSER, I have to wait till it premieres but I’m excited to see what you have to say!
I’ve seen number 15 in Whitehead.
Nice, did you see 171?
@@theaccountofmine.8779 yes I did.
I hope you get a chance to see her when she’s running again, I’m pretty excited to myself. It’ll probably be a while before I do but just knowing she’ll be running again makes me happy.
Ah, the M-420. One of the local railroads has several of these as well as many other Alco locomotives in regular service. Their oldest in regular service are a few RS-3s. This railroad uses Alco and MLW locomotives EXCLUSIVELY! Their latest purchase is a PA-1 that they are restoring for regular service. They have even built a dedicated Alco/MLW shop to restore and maintain these units. Some of the diesels still wear their original, fallen flag, paint schemes. These include a Reading RS-3 (non operational I believe) and a Lehigh Valley Alco Century (operational and in regular service).
Ah, yes... the D-L. #1554 is the only surviving CNJ RS3 IIRC, and she's operational. Not enough CNJ stuff was preserved, so to see much of what's left in operable condition is A-OK with me.
And that PA-1 was once owned by Doyle McCormack. It was a former ATSF and D&H unit and now wears a Nickel Plate livery.
As a South African myself, I conform that 19D's are incredible. Seen many of them in person before! Might even be riding behind one in a few months! Wonderful engines they are indeed :) Also, If you didn't know, Margie isn't the only named 19d. In fact almost all of south africa's preserved locos have names! Like Jessica, who is ALSO a 19D! Thank you very much for covering our locos. You should cover SAR 15F's next. Just as good, or even better than the Dollies :)
The 15AR's were the stallwarts on South African Railways from 1928 till the end of steam in SA
You beauty! Thanks cobber.
Please cover the GWR Castles next. They were so good that one of the only reasons that the LMS employed Stanier is so they could get their hands on Castle plans, as Stanier used to work for the GWR
9:02 That music... DONALD AND DOUGLAS 😳😁👍
Just got such a throwback on that intro 😂
Nice, pacifics for the rollercoaster mainline
Thanks for making these vids.
You introduced me to great trains I may have never known about.
Finaly! I have been waiting for another "Best Trains Ever" instalment!
i love the M420s!!!
There's one M420 preserved at Expo Rail in St. Constant Quebec. The St Lawrence and Atlantic unit in the thumbnail is the preserved unit.
I had the great previlge of seeing an M-420 in Scranton, PA last year on The Delaware Lackawanna Railroad. With that being said, railfan approves of this list 👍.
The Western Australian locomotive was a beauty
Another great video, keep up the good work
BEST INTRO EVER!!!!!!!!!!
That intro was boss! LOVED IT!😂
the DSER 15/16 looks like it would be a good candidate for James' basis
I agree with you. Not to mention one is preserved which I'm seriously proud Who needs a Non 2-6-0 Lancashire and Yorkshire class 28 engine when we've got one DSER 15 class preserved today!
4:13 Fun fact one of these still runs to this day in Pennsylvania. No. 3568 runs on the Oil Creek And Titusville Railroad pulling passenger trains through the valley that changed the world. And the railroad is not too far away from Eire PA.
In fact, the MLW m-420 have be used then for the atomic train movie (if i wrong).
Another train for the Best Trains Ever list is the British Rail Class 158, one of the best DMUs ever made by them
The yellow m420 you use in the video is at a museum in montreal
I LOVE THIS VIDEO!
Wait, the DSER 15 looked like James to me
I lost it with the intro. 🤣
Might I suggest a new list; "Top 5 trains with the LONGEST SERVICE LIFE"
This has probably been commented already, but at least one is in preservation unlike the video said. The M420 you showed in the thumbnail is preserved at exporail just outside of Montréal!
Now we need a video on the top 5 early locomotives.
You've got to give it to William Stanier. He made great trains.
And his got great Eyebrows
Heh. Happy days. Happy trains.
9:33 REAL LIFE JAMES!?
No
WOW, THIS VIDEO IS AWESOME, AND BIG IMPROVEMENT TO THE REST!
FINALLY! He discovers the GOOD Canadian Locos! Keep looking, Darkness! There are a lot more great Steamers from the Great White North!
He should make a video about Canada's oldest operating steam locomotive...
I'm surprised he didn't mention that they are broad gauge (5'3") and with #15 being one of a very few operational broad gauge steam locomotives.
Victorian Railways locomotives in Australia operated by Steamrail also have numerous 5ft 3in 1600mm broad gauge steam locomotives in current mainline preservation use .
Several R class 4-6-4 1952 built Hudsons, A2 4-6-0 from 1916, D3 4-6-0 from 1903, several K class 2-8-0s built over the period 1922 to 1946, a few J class 2-8-0s from 1954 and a Y class 0-6-0 from 1889. Then add to that the South Australian 4-8-4, 4-6-2 and 4-6-0 locomotives also on 1600mm gauge and in operating condition. Then numerous VR broad gauge diesels of the B, S, T, X, Y And F classes. Several SAR classes of diesel as well.
Just last weekend we had a 1910 to 1918 era five car EMU Tait set running to the annual AMRA model railway exhibition. No older preserved EMU running on main lines I believe. Diesel railcars too like the DERM. Numerous others static in museums. Then four or five 762mm gauge 2-6-2T and one narrow gauge Garratt.
Yet Darkness says Australia was late to preservation.
A real shame so few Irish steam preserved and running.
I was like # 420.
Blaze it.
9:01 Should've done bag pipes in the background for a second lol
There's still a couple of MLW M420s (Century Alcos) running in southern New Jersey.
Is that a WAGR W I see???
Like #14. WhaaaAAAAAaaa.....t.... No...no...no SD40-2? 😱 Holy locomoley Batman...
You should look in too some of the other south African steam locomotives aswell like 25nc or 15f and 16e
Finally my favorite diesel the M420. RS-18u should be next
The wagr 'w' class were also built for the Silverton tramway company of nsw
Seeing Stanier has built a successful 4-6-2, I’m kinda wonder why GWR never built their own 4-6-2 aside from failed Great Bear. I mean, Stanier pretty much took GWR principles but improved it with new innovations to make them great so why GWR themselves did not built a class or two? Yes, they planned 8000 Cathedrals but that never left the workshop.
Don’t get me wrong though, GWR 4-6-0s are amazing in their own right (in fact GWR Castle class is my favorite class of locomotives alongside Ivatt C1) but still.
Unless you have Train sim as the Cathedrals are in
The King's could handle the traffic at the time with the higher quality Welsh coal they used. The Princess big firebox and trailing truck was to deal with worse coal. After the war the GWR got interested in gas turbine locomotives as being the future motive power and ordered one from Switzerland.
As time went on British Railways took over with their plans for standard locomotives and Brittanias to run that role.
Don't let them fool you, as much as the Kings were great they had their limitations thanks to the weight ans size GWR could only used them between London-Taunton-Plymouth and London-Birmingham-Wolverhampton lines, so yeah that most likely proves even GWR wanted to have a Class of Pacifics they simply didn't have a place to use them.
didn't mention two cn m420's 'drive' on the road(yes not street running, drive on top of asphalt)
The Southern Railroad Co of NJ has 4? M420s(3 in active service, 1 that was being stored and they had more but they we’re probably salvaged for parts for the other locomotives and scrapped. They still run about once a week
There’s an M-420 that runs for the local freight railroad by me
The back story to the preservation of 6203 (and others), and the role of Billy Butlin, worthy of a video in its own right
DSER is Donald and Douglas but failed at both escaping scrap because Sir Topham Hatt sent one back. Alternate universe
Addendum; The C420's of the Long Island were pretty good engines too! They were sold off,by the MTA,and hopefully there are still a few operational! Thank you 😇 😊!
FINALLY
SAR STEAM
AND 2685 IS IN THE VIDEO
(i volunteer at the railway that he operates at
You wonder why Canadian Pacific Railway didn't buy a large number of M-420's. Considering their reliability, they could have given CPR a better reputation.
Has anybody ever told you that you have a very nice singing voice?
M420 3568 of OC&T runs a tourist and freight trains from Titusville, PA to Oil City, PA through an extremely historic part of the U.S. I've heard it's under preservation as of right now.
any chance you can do a fallen flag on the grand trunk?
Like the song
What list with the q1 go on?
There already is an m420 at a museum, 3569 at EXPO rail
How about a list of locomotives wich have the most in preservation ❤❓️
Please put the canadian national s class 2-8-2s, my favorite steam locomotives of all time in the best trains list there were 466 of them built
I'd like to see you do a video focused on min gauge locomotives.
I believe the great western 'saints' deserve a mention, progenitor of all outside cylindered 4-6-0's in the uk
Well, progenitors of the outside cylinder EXPRESS 4-6-0, certainly. I think the Highland Railway "Jones Goods" and "Castle" class (not to be confused with the Great Western "Castle" class of course) would probably would like to have a word with you ...😅
@@robertwilloughby8050 Yes, you are completely right, my6 bad
Have you covered the Gresley V2s yet? Absolute monsters
You should put the UP gas turbines on the next list.
0:26 JOHNNY CUBA!?!?!?!
No
Yes
**_Stories of Sodor_ intensifies**
I'm surprised that over the entire series the been no mention of the NSWGR standard goods locomotives, 50, 53, or 55 classes, all of which were relatively similar and there were around 600 over the 3 classes and 280 of the 50 class alone, built from the 1890s ish until the late 1920s early 30s from memory the last of which was withdrawn at the end of steam in NSW in the late 60s/early 70s
Aayyyy! Aussies! Woo!
Can you put a Finnish national railways Hr1 class to your best train ever list?
If any m-420 gets preserved bc rail number 642 has to be one of them, by the way can someone tell me the whereabouts of the locomotive the last photo I could find of it was in 2001
How about doing a video on the old February 4th, 1864 Colt Armory Factory Fire which Destroyed the hole East Factory in Hartford Connecticut.
Give us the FMSR O Class thank you god amen
Wait till you here about the SAR 25NCs
South Australian railway R class the train that runs the oldest Australian railway still around known as the cockle train
can you put the Litra E on a list?
Even though Worcester is spelled the way it is, it’s pronounced “Woster”
3:07 Oh come on 😂, Providence & Wor-chess-ter? As someone who lives in Worcester, MA and has this railroad as our local carrier, this made me laugh.
I’m just teasing, but for future reference it’s pronounced Wuss-ter.
can you please make some videos about asian steam locomotives?
I read that b.t.e. 1
Why You Not Put BR42 And LMS 8F In Part 12 Because Why Not
Vote for the LMS 8F here, especially the ones that had improved balancing later in their careers.
@@robertwilloughby8050Black 5 better
6:14 Is that the Hogwarts Express? Is the Princess Margret's number 5972? I was asking because of this....................
Andrew(The RocketCity Railfan) - 07/31/2023 11:13 PM
Haven’t really thought about it that much because I never grew up with Harry Potter, and I’ve already seen a several other people make such videos already. Not to mention I haven’t read any of the books nor seen any of the movies, so I’d feel more confident doing that first. 5972 is a different world for me than 1225 and the polar express.
Princess Margaret Rose was numbered 6203 when first running. After the 1948 nationalisation of the LMS into British Railways until withdrawal it was numbered 46203.
I am going to guess that it was a coal mine.
3:08 It's not Providence and "War-chest-er"... it's pronounced "Wuh-stir".
8:42 53!?!?!?!?!!?!? WHHHHHAAAAAAAAAATTTTTT!??!?!!?!?!?!?
Come on sd60F
Its pronounced WOO-ster.
History in the dark. It's not worchester it's wister and Providence
F.Y.I. " Worchester" is pronounced "Wooster":..
As someone from Worcester, can confirm.
The engines on the number 1 spot looks a lot like James. I wonder what made Reverend Awdry think otherwise.
HEY DARKNESS I FINALLY GOT A SUGGESTION FOR YOUR NEXT VIDEO IN THIS SERIES!! :D
The BNSF "Beep": th-cam.com/video/xiipQuXct4w/w-d-xo.html
PLEASE ........... don't pretend to '' sing '' .........
Sadly, I had to call my glass insurance. 😞 LOL
